Chapter 285: Chapter 285: Dissuasion

This evening, Wan Chu’er first practiced in the Practice Room on the third floor for an hour, then cleaned up, changed into pajamas, and sat on her bed reading a book for another hour.

The book, which she had brought back from the old house that afternoon, was a documentary on prominent figures during World War II, very detailed and quite interesting to read.

The next day, she found time to meet Xiao Shan in the electronic mall. Xiao Shan was a low-profile computer expert whose skills were far superior to Wan Chu’er’s.

Hearing that Wan Chu’er wanted to improve her skills in a short time, Xiao Shan asked her a couple of questions, thought for a moment, and then gave her a website address along with a username and password.

"There’s some stuff I’ve compiled there; you can take a look." After speaking, he lowered his voice, "Be careful to keep it secret."

Wan Chu’er’s eyebrows twitched, and she happily agreed, heading straight for the internet café on the top floor of the electronic mall.

Entering the website, username, and password, a webpage opened up, filled with documents—close to one gigabyte. She briefly scanned the names of those documents and suddenly became excited.

Her excitement was like the unlucky squirrel in the Ice Age, discovering a pile of pine nuts, making every cell in her body want to dance.

If she was considered a person from the worldly society, then the website Xiao Shan gave her was like a treasure trove of martial arts secrets, all of which were the most top-notch in the world.

These things weren’t something you could find in a school library; they were likely summaries by Xiao Shan himself or collections he had gathered from elsewhere.

Wan Chu’er pondered for a long while on how to thank Xiao Shan for his generosity.

In fact, giving Xiao Shan the latest top-notch hardware might suit his taste, but Wan Chu’er suspected that the good stuff in the electronic mall had already been snapped up by Xiao Shan, or that Xiao Shan’s possessions were items not even available in the electronic mall, considering how impressive Xiao Shan was.

Unable to figure it out, she decided to ask Jiang Kechu for advice.

However, as soon as she left the electronic mall, Jiang Kechu called her to ask where she was, saying that he wanted to meet.

Wan Chu’er checked the time—it was work hours. Still, since Jiang Kechu wanted to meet, so be it; she was wanting to talk to Jiang Kechu about this matter.

Half an hour later, the two sat on an empty set of steps in a park.

Jiang Kechu said calmly and collectedly, "Chuchu, stop what you’re currently doing."

Wan Chu’er was bewildered. Did Jiang Kechu know what she was doing?

But she had only decided on this the day before yesterday. Today, she had just met Xiao Shan and hadn’t even told him the truth. How did Jiang Kechu find out?

Unable to resist, Wan Chu’er laughed, "How do you know what I’m doing?"

Jiang Kechu said evenly, "You’re preparing for the selection of the Special Action Department for tomorrow’s summer."

Wan Chu’er was shocked and her eyes widened, "How do you know about that? Uncle Jiang, do you have magical vision on me or clairaudient ears?"

Jiang Kechu ignored her teasing and looked at her deeply, repeating seriously, "That place is not for you. Don’t go."

Seeing his earnestness, Wan Chu’er also put away her smile, "I want to go."

"That’s not a place for fun. The people there frequently face various dangerous missions, the complexity and danger of which you can’t imagine."

Wan Chu’er stubbornly said, "I want to go!"

Jiang Kechu frowned, "I hope you can live freely and happily. If you join the Special Action Department, your life will be fettered by it. Constraints and rules will deprive you of your freedom. You’ll need permission for everything. Is this the life you want?"

Wan Chu’er squinted, looking at him doubtfully, feeling that Jiang Kechu was exaggerating to dissuade her.

Jiang Kechu saw through Wan Chu’er’s thoughts and said patiently, "I’m not lying to you. Ma Yanmei, who accompanied you to country K, is from the Special Action Department. Look at how every move she makes has to be commanded."

After saying this, something occurred to him and he added, "Did you go to country K once and find the process fun?"

Wan Chu’er looked at him noncommittally. freew\ebno\vel..(c)om

Jiang Kechu laughed helplessly and said, "That was an illusion. In fact, the danger level of this trip to country K is the lowest on the Special Action Department’s list of missions."

Wan Chu’er was somewhat shaken by Jiang Kechu’s words. She wasn’t afraid of danger; what she feared was really having to ask for permission for everything, thereby losing her freedom.

"Uncle Jiang, are you a member of the Special Action Department?" Wan Chu’er suddenly asked.

Jiang Kechu paused briefly and said succinctly, "No."

"Eh?" Wan Chu’er was quite surprised. Seeing how well Jiang Kechu knew the Special Action Department, she had thought he was part of it. Turns out he wasn’t. "Then how do you know so clearly?"

"I have my channels, but I can’t tell you. It involves confidentiality."

Wan Chu’er pouted, "Then why haven’t you kept your entire person confidential, coming to me and falling in love?"

Jiang Kechu held his forehead, "Stop being obstinate. Promise me, you can continue practicing martial arts and playing with computers, but don’t participate in the Special Action Department’s selection. I hope you can be an ordinary person and live a safe and joyful life."

The words ’ordinary person’ touched a nerve in Wan Chu’er, and she moved her lips in resistance, but didn’t speak.

Jiang Kechu shook his head with a headache and said, "Don’t you want to have a good life with me? If you go to the Special Action Department, we probably won’t see each other more than a few times a year."

Wan Chu’er was skeptical, "The Special Action Department doesn’t allow people to get married and have a life?"

"Because once you’re in, you must always be on call, often going out on missions, sometimes for months at a time. I often have to go out too, so we might hardly see each other," Jiang Kechu patiently explained.

Wan Chu’er’s thoughts were somewhat confused by Jiang Kechu’s meddling, so she simply said, "Let me think about it. There are still eight months to go, what’s the hurry?"

Jiang Kechu: "..."

Had all his words not managed to crush this girl’s thoughts?

As long as Wan Chu’er had this idea, coupled with Old Sir Zhong’s support, she would probably end up joining in the end.

Remembering her earlier concerns, Wan Chu’er then asked, "I want to give Xiao Shan a gift to thank him. Do you have any good suggestions?"

Jiang Kechu said, "Don’t worry about it. I’ll send the gift for you."

Wan Chu’er giggled, looped her arm around his and leaned in for a kiss.

Wan Chu’er had a class that afternoon, so the two didn’t stay long and hurriedly returned to school.

Although her determination wasn’t as strong as before, she liked this fulfilling life and wanted to make herself stronger, so she didn’t tell Old Sir Zhong and continued with her plan to improve herself.
