Rebirth: He Decides to Lie Flat -
Chapter 502 - 502 497 Meeting the Parents
Chapter 502: Chapter 497: Meeting the Parents Chapter 502: Chapter 497: Meeting the Parents Yang Dan’s second eldest brother and his family of three stayed for about half an hour before leaving, handing over five hundred yuan to Mother Yang before they left.
It was unclear whether it was a New Year’s gift or compensation for the fall and nutritional expenses, but in any case, the money was given rather abruptly and was the first time it had ever happened.
“Mom, here you go.”
Yang Dan’s second eldest brother seemed a bit uncomfortable as he handed over the money, and his movements were rather stiff. However, Mother Yang didn’t accept it, merely saying the family had money and didn’t need any.
Yang Dan turned her head to look at her second brother and suddenly said, “About the two thousand yuan I borrowed from you for school before…”
“You don’t need to give that back.”
Before Yang Dan could finish her sentence, her second brother quickly interrupted her, saying, “That was given to you, not lent, no need to repay.”
How had it suddenly become a gift?
Yang Dan looked at her second brother’s wife whose smile was a bit forced, but she also agreed with the second brother, saying there was no need to repay it.
Yang Dan paused for a moment, but didn’t insist any further.
Blood ties are something that, sometimess even if you’re reluctant, can’t be completely severed by a quarrel or a fight, especially when you have your parents to think about.
After the New Year had passed and they had visited all the relatives they needed to, on the eighth day, Yang Dan rode her electric bike to her second brother’s house. She told her second brother and his wife that she would leave the bike at their place for now and take her parents to Beijing early the next morning.
Upon hearing that they were going to Beijing, Yang Dan’s sister-in-law was immediately startled, her eyes widening in surprise. What now? They didn’t ask for the money back, so she could use it to go on a trip?
The round trip tickets alone for the elderly couple would cost how much?
Thinking this, Yang Dan’s second sister-in-law wouldn’t say it out loud, and besides, Yang Bo had already spoken up before she could, asking, “You want to take Mom and Dad to Beijing to…”
“See a doctor!” Yang Dan glanced at them and said indifferently, “Dad’s leg has been in so much pain that he can’t even sleep at night anymore. I asked a classmate to help me find an orthopedic specialist, so I’m taking him to see the doctor while I’m still on holiday.”
The expression on the faces of Yang Dan’s second brother and his wife stiffened. They knew about their father’s bad leg, but they hadn’t realized it had become so severe.
When Yang Dan was leaving, her second brother followed her out to the yard, “Dan Dan, how much money will Dad need for the doctor? Just say the amount, and I’ll go to town to withdraw it.”
Yang Dan stopped and thought it over, thinking it was better not to refuse free money, especially since paying for Dad’s medical treatment should be the responsibility of his children.
“I’m not sure how much it will be exactly, but no matter the amount, I’ll contribute my share. You should contribute a part, and I suggest you go and talk to our eldest brother about it, too. Otherwise, even if you don’t mind, your wife won’t be happy. Why should the eldest reap the benefits when times are good but not contribute in times of need? Am I right? I’ll talk to our sister and I believe she won’t refuse. That way, the cost can be divided into four parts, and the burden on each family won’t be too much…”
Catching a glimpse of her second sister-in-law’s shadow behind the gate out of the corner of her eye, Yang Dan, expressionless, turned her head and waved her hand at her second brother, “I should go now, I still have things to pack at home.”
In fact, there wasn’t much to pack, just a couple of changes of clothes, all new clothes that she had brought home for them before the New Year. As for accommodation, since it was difficult to rent a place during the New Year period, she would stay temporarily in the bedroom on the second floor above Memberland Pizza, where she had been living during her holiday.
What would happen next would depend on her father’s condition. If it took a long time, she would rent a small place nearby.
At three in the afternoon, Yang Dan was picked up by Memberland at the entrance of their village.
She got into the passenger seat of the car and then guided him to her house.
Memberland used to like keeping a small tuft of beard on his chin, which looked quite distinctive, but today the little beard was gone. He had shaved his entire face clean, and although he had applied a face mask the night before, Yang Dan wasn’t sure about the effect, but she couldn’t help glancing several times at his face after they met up.
Memberland felt a bit awkward and asked quietly, “What, what’s wrong? Doesn’t it look good?”
“Why did you shave your beard?”
“Doesn’t this make me look younger?”
As he spoke, he straightened his back, signaling Yang Dan to notice the red turtleneck sweater he had just bought.
Yang Dan fell silent for a moment, then sincerely complimented him, “You do look quite a bit younger, but even before, you didn’t look old.”
Memberland was content with life, with no desires or needs, extremely satisfied with his current situation, which made him look very serene; he didn’t seem to be in his early thirties, at most just twenty-seven or twenty-eight.
But the problem was that Yang Dan was nine years younger than him; she was only twenty-three this year. This being the first time meeting the parents, he wanted to appear just a little younger.
“Turn at the corner up ahead.”
Her family lived in the middle of the village, and along the way, they had passed many households. Since the lunar New Year hadn’t passed and there wasn’t much work in the fields, chattering groups could be spotted at almost any roadside.
Not to mention a car with a Beijing license plate—a sight to behold—an unfamiliar person arriving by bike to visit relatives would still prompt the nosy ones to inevitably ask, “Which family are you visiting?”
So, Memberland’s white BMW had attracted a lot of attention from the villagers as soon as it entered the village.
But because the car windows were up, one could only vaguely see from the front windshield that Yang Dan was sitting in the passenger seat, and the driver was unrecognizable.
“Whose place are they heading to?”
“Isn’t that Yang Laoyi’s second daughter, Dan Dan, in the car?”
The car passed by the entrance to Yang Laoda’s house, then swiftly disappeared from sight, just as Yang Laoda’s daughter-in-law stepped out of the courtyard.
One of the onlookers, not shy of drumming up drama, shouted, “Hey, from the family of Qiang, your sister-in-law just went by in a sedan, and a young man was driving it, looking pretty impressive. Is she in a relationship?”
Upon hearing this, Yang Laoda’s sister-in-law was taken aback, then dismissively curled her lip, “What relationship, what sort of person comes over to visit relatives in the afternoon? What kind of family is this?”
Someone who recognized the license plate chimed in, “I saw that the license plate is from Beijing. If they set out from Beijing early in the morning, they would only arrive around now.”
Another person exclaimed, “Whoa, from what you’re saying, is Yang Dan dating someone from Beijing?”
“Doesn’t she study in Beijing anyway? It’s normal for her to date someone from there.”
“Come on, let’s head to Old Yang Uncle’s place to see what Yang Dan’s partner looks like.”
A group of people said this and swarmed toward Yang Dan’s home, leaving Yang Laoda’s sister-in-law alone on the road, looking not very pleased.
Watching the departing crowd, her face changed expressions uncertainly, hesitating whether to follow or not because of her pride; finally, as if struck by a thought, she turned back home and directed her son, who was watching TV in the living room, “Go, go over to your grandma’s to have a look…”
“I’m not going!” Yang Bo cut her off irritably before she could finish, “Didn’t my aunt already say not to go there?”
“That’s just her talking nonsense, why do you listen to her? Once she gets married off, if she comes back to her mother’s place, you can even send her away,” she replied, as she tried to turn the TV off.
But then Yang Bo suddenly stood up from the sofa, turned to his mom, and yelled, “I’m not as thick-skinned as you are, I said I’m not going!”
“Can’t I go to grandma’s place because of you? Needed to change a light bulb and you couldn’t buy one yourself? Had to make me take grandma’s, and now look, are you happy?”
Right after speaking, he turned around and stormed back to his room, slamming the door shut with a bang.
