Chapter 304 - 304 301 This Face is Still Useful
Chapter 304: Chapter 301 This Face is Still Useful Chapter 304: Chapter 301 This Face is Still Useful The speaker was a middle-aged, slightly chubby woman with a round face. She sat on a small stool in front of the coffee table, cracking sunflower seeds and pointing at Luo Xiao’s mother, who stood on the balcony looking out.
This was Luo Xiao’s third aunt, who had a son and a daughter, both younger than Luo Xiao, but already married.
“Third sister-in-law, you don’t have to worry about Xiao Yu, so of course, you can’t understand second sister-in-law’s feelings,” Luo Xiao’s fourth aunt said with a laugh. “Haven’t you seen how old Luo Xiao has gotten? It was not easy finding a partner, wouldn’t second sister-in-law be nervous?”
Luo Xiao’s mother overheard the conversation between her sisters-in-law behind her but did not turn around, she didn’t feel like dealing with them today.
There were six siblings in the Luo Family, each with two children, except her family which only had Luo Xiao. The couple devotedly nurtured and carefully raised her. Thankfully, Luo Xiao lived up to their expectations. Apart from her grades being somewhat poor when she first started elementary school, she had kept her rank within the top three of her grade since third grade, all the way through her college entrance exams to Beijing University. Afterwards, she was recommended for a graduate program, and now she had just completed her Ph.D. and was retained by Beijing University as a lecturer.
One could say her achievements were quite impressive.
Luo Xiao’s parents were proud of their daughter, and in the year she was accepted into Beijing University, her grandparents finally started to see their granddaughter in a new light. However, ignored for many years, Luo Xiao was completely unmoved by the change in her grandparents’ attitude.
This was also the reason why Luo Xiao’s mother had called Yu Heng and invited him over, because if she hadn’t, Luo Xiao most likely would not have brought Yu Heng on this particular day.
Because from the beginning, she had never thought about bringing Yu Heng to meet her grandparents.
A silver Mercedes-Benz slowly drove into the complex, and when Luo Xiao’s mother saw the Beijing license plate, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She turned, giving her third and fourth aunts a faint smile, “They’re here. I’m going out to meet them.”
With that, she headed for the door.
The living room was crowded and noisy, and only Luo Xiao’s third and fourth aunts heard Luo Xiao’s mother’s words. They exchanged glances, disdainfully curling their lips. Going out to greet them — they weren’t even talking about marriage yet, and she was already so humble, afraid Luo Xiao wouldn’t find a suitor or that he wouldn’t want her?
What’s the use of being educated all the way to a Ph.D.?
She’s still an old maid who can’t get married!
“Guess what Luo Xiao’s hard-found partner must be like?”
“What else can he be? Even though Luo Xiao looks fine, has a high degree, and a good job, her age is still a factor. Even if we don’t talk about those with better conditions, would someone similar to her not first consider a young woman in her early twenties? It would take someone who is stuffed to the brim to want an almost thirty-year-old old maid with good conditions.”
“I think so too. The second sister-in-law said he is a professor at Beijing University, could he be divorced?”
“So, you’re saying she would have to become a stepmother as soon as she walked through the door? He must be at least thirty-five or older, right? Otherwise, how could he be ranked as a professor?”
“Not possible for thirty-five, he must be at least forty.”
The two chatted while listening for any sound at the door, and soon they saw Luo Xiao’s mother pushing the door open to enter, the joy on her face and her smile impossible to hide.
“Come on, Yu Heng, come inside. You don’t need to change shoes, there are too many people today, and we’ll definitely need to clean up after this afternoon.”
Accompanying her words, a tall and handsome young man in a white shirt and black casual pants walked in behind her.
Luo San Auntie and Luo Si Auntie had originally wanted to enjoy a laugh, but the moment they saw Yu Heng’s face, they froze, their hands still clutching sunflower seeds, maintaining the motion of moving them to their mouths, yet they were as if the pause button had been hit—motionless, with astonishment and amazement clear in their eyes.
It wasn’t just the two of them, but also everyone in the noisy and bustling living room who, upon seeing the ethereal man who seemed untainted by the mortal world, fell suddenly silent, all staring at Yu Heng in surprise, their faces filled with confusion.
Who is this? Did he walk into the wrong door?
Seeing everyone’s reaction, Luo Xiao’s mother let out a long breath of relief, her smile deepening.
Luo Xiao’s grandfather, along with a few sons, was admiring a master’s calligraphy collected by his youngest son in the study. The old man did not notice the commotion in the living room, but Luo Xiao’s father turned his head, glanced at the closed door of the study, then got up, walked to the door, opened it, and stepped outside.
The living room wasn’t very large and seemed a bit crowded today because of the number of people. Just moments ago, everyone had been engaged in lively discussions, but now they all seemed unusually quiet.
Therefore, as soon as Luo Xiao’s father came out, he saw the tall and handsome young man who had just entered the living room, standing beside his daughter.
“Old Luo, come here, haven’t you never met Yu Heng? This is him,” Luo Xiao’s mother said with a smile as she waved at him, and at the same time, turned her head to introduce Yu Heng, “This is your Uncle Luo, he has always wanted to chat with you, but he’s been too busy with work to find the time.”
Yu Heng busily greeted him politely, “Uncle Luo.”
But Luo Xiao’s father just stared at him, unable to snap out of it.
Yu Heng sighed inwardly, thinking that his face really had made quite an impact today: not only effective on women, but damn, it worked on men too!
However, Luo Xiao couldn’t help but roll her eyes and called out softly, “Dad…”
“Oh… oh…” Luo Xiao’s father came to his senses and immediately put on a warm smile, greeting enthusiastically, “Yu Heng, right? Come on, Grandfather is in the study, you two come in quickly.”
Theirs was just an ordinary family, without many rituals; whoever arrived first would present their gifts to the old man, no matter the time.
But everyone knew what each person had brought.
When Yu Heng walked in, he was holding some nutritional supplements and liquor, which clearly didn’t look like gifts. Rather, it was what Luo Xiao was holding in her arms that seemed more like one—a long, rectangular dark brown box that looked quite ancient. It was a mystery what was inside. Another box was easier to discern—a long shape suggested it was some kind of scroll or painting.
However, Luo Si Uncle had already procured a master’s calligraphy for the old man; another piece of calligraphy wouldn’t be extraordinary.
The two followed Luo’s father into the study. The old master looked in surprise at the stunning young man who entered with Luo Xiao, and turned to his second son in confusion, “Who is this…?”
“Dad, this is Xiao Xiao’s boyfriend, Yu Heng. He’s the youngest professor at Beijing University, and even a double Ph.D. from abroad. He came specially today to celebrate your birthday,” said Luo Xiao’s father.
The old man, having seen much in his years, knew that there were some people whose intelligence was irrationally high. Thus, he wasn’t too surprised by his second son’s introduction, but the others in the room were visibly shocked when they heard this.
Especially Luo Si Uncle, who looked Yu Heng up and down with a bit of skepticism. He felt his second brother was puffing himself up to look impressive. Being so young, at best he thought Yu Heng could be a lecturer like Luo Xiao; even an associate professor might be out of reach, let alone a professor.
But this face was really handsome—in his circle, he had never encountered anyone like this. He had never imagined that his niece, who had become an old maid, could find such an excellent match.
