Chapter 66: Chapter 33 If You Keep Yelling, I’ll Pluck You Naked_2
Unexpectedly, Second Grandma Shi was indeed simply appreciating the flowers, other than giving guidance and engaging in light conversation about the splendor before our very eyes, she offered no additional comments.
Moreover, she was incredibly proficient at it. There are at least a dozen varieties of roses in this area, some of which are extremely similar to one another. Second Grandma Shi, with ease, pointed out which variety was flourishing, which should not be planted in such a way, which one had its branches pruned poorly, which one’s color lacked vibrancy due to not being pruned, which colors would complement each other better when placed next to each other, and so forth. Listening to her, Sang Wan’s horizons were greatly broadened, leaving her in awe.
"Sister-in-law truly has a bright and insightful mind, pure and noble in spirit! I have gained so much insight from you!" Sang Wan couldn’t help but exclaim.
Second Grandma Shi covered her mouth and let out a "Pfft" of laughter, saying, "Look at what you’re saying, sister-in-law! What’s all this? It’s nothing more than a little hobby to pass the time when I’m idle!"
The light in Second Grandma Shi’s eyes dimmed slightly, and the fleeting moment of desolation did not escape Sang Wan’s notice. Sang Wan’s heart softened; how similar the two of them were, both having had no choice but to marry, and both of their husbands were foolishly in love with other women.
However, in Sang Wan’s view, Second Grandma Shi was much more fortunate than herself. Although Second Master Shi had eloped with a woman from the brothel, a woman from the brothel would always be so, and Second Master Shi would have to return home sooner or later. Despite the loneliness that Second Grandma Shi felt at the moment, she still had something to look forward to!
And her? The woman her husband yearned for was close at hand, with status and emotional ties. Not to mention the future, she didn’t dare to contemplate what might happen even a year from now.
"To excel to such an extent, it’s clear that you’ve put your heart into it. Without genuine fondness, how could you be so devoted? Having a hobby to while away the hours is indeed a good thing! It shows that sister-in-law is truly open-minded and generous!" Sang Wan said with a smile.
"Sister-in-law sure knows how to compliment," Second Grandma Shi laughed somewhat shyly, then added: "If sister-in-law doesn’t mind, I can just come and chat with you when I’m free in the future, how about that?"
"Of course! I couldn’t ask for more!" Sang Wan smiled, and the two exchanged an understanding look.
While the two were hitting it off and enjoying their newfound sister-in-law bond amid lively conversation, from not too far away came a series of shrill and excited squawks. Among them, Shi Rui’s particularly piercing and shrill voice rang in the air, almost making people’s ears burst!
"What’s happening?" Second Grandma Shi was startled.
"Let’s quickly go and see!" Sang Wan said in haste.
The two hurried over, and upon their arrival, the maids parted ways for them, their excitement duly subdued.
"Big sister-in-law, second sister-in-law, quick, look!" Shi Rui’s eyes sparkled as she pointed with her little finger to the well-behaved parrot in Liu Ya’s hands, exclaiming, "Liu Ya is amazing! This parrot is a new treasure that Father just acquired. It is wicked and has such bad temper that not even Father can tame it. But it actually listens to Liu Ya!"
Second Grandma Shi was taken aback and laughed, "How remarkable indeed!"
Sang Wan looked over and saw that the parrot was covered in feathers as white as snow, with a sharp beak and little claws bright red like blood, and its dark, glassy eyes gleaming brilliantly. It held its small, proud head high with an air of looking down on all, yet it docilely allowed Liu Ya to stroke its feathers.
Second Grandma Shi chuckled from the side, "Sister-in-law might not know, but this white parrot was recently acquired by grandfather. I heard that such a purely white parrot is extremely rare; it cost more than three hundred silver taels! It’s indeed lovely and very smart; it can learn anything after seeing it just once! But it’s too clever, it doesn’t obey anyone, and it doesn’t listen to anyone’s words. Yesterday it even hurt grandfather’s hand with its pecking! Somehow it ended up here today!"
A wave of dizziness hit Sang Wan’s forehead, almost causing her to lose her balance, and a vague sense of foreboding loomed in her heart. She glared at Liu Ya and commanded, "Why are you still holding on to it? Xingzhi, quickly take it to Second Master Shi!"
"Yes, Big Grandma," Liu Ya replied and was about to hand the parrot over to Xingzhi.
Yet, the parrot immediately flapped its wings and glared at Xingzhi while screeching shrilly, "Get away! Get away! Don’t touch me! Don’t touch me!" prompting a round of hearty laughter from everyone.
Liu Ya hurriedly pursed her lips, muttering something to the parrot in a low voice while gently stroking its feathers until she calmed it down again.
"Big Grandma, why don’t I take it to Second Master Shi?" Liu Ya suggested with a smile.
Curious, Shi Rui eagerly asked with a laugh, "Liu Ya, how does the parrot listen to you? How did you manage that?"
Liu Ya smiled, clearly very pleased with herself; coming from a family of hunters, training birds was her ancestral skill!
Just as Liu Ya was about to speak, Sang Wan abruptly cut in, "Her? It’s just a fluke, that’s all. What does she understand? Alright, now take it back quickly, Xingzhi, go with her! Off you go!"
Although Liu Ya didn’t know why Big Grandma forbade her from explaining, she knew that Big Grandma would never harm her, so she simply smiled, kept quiet, and left with Xingzhi.
They had not gone far when several maids came calling along the way for "Little White! Little White!" and "Little White, where are you?" - presumably sent by Second Master Shi to look for the white parrot.
"Little White is here! Little White is here!" Shi Rui raised her hand and called out loudly.
The maids hurried over upon hearing her and were stunned to find the parrot obediently perched on Liu Ya’s hand.
After Sang Wan got the details of the situation, she ordered Liu Ya to hand over the parrot to them. However, just like with Xingzhi, Little White would not let them touch him, leaving the maids with no choice but to laughingly ask Liu Ya to take the parrot back.
Sang Wan suddenly changed her mind, remaining silent.
While everyone was puzzled, Gu Fangzi stepped forward with a smile, "Big cousin sister-in-law, just let Liu Ya do it! Second cousin uncle really treasures this white parrot, and if Liu Ya delivers it back, she’ll surely get a big reward!"
"That’s even more reason she should not go!" For the first time in front of everyone, Sang Wan openly opposed Gu Fangzi. She glanced lightly at the maids from the second house who had come searching and said with a smile, "You sisters have worked hard, it would be appropriate for you to take it back!"
Saying this, Sang Wan stepped forward and reached out to take the white parrot from Liu Ya’s hands.
The white parrot glared back, about to squawk in protest, when Sang Wan stared it down fiercely and leaned in to threaten in a low, stern voice, "Shut up! If you squawk again, I’ll pluck out all your feathers!"
