Chapter 124: Chapter 62 Miss Biao’s Fate is Really Tough_2
Sang Wan pretended not to see and bowed her head to drink tea. This was her brother and sister-in-law’s house; it was not her place to make decisions or ask people to stay. Moreover, she did not want to get involved in the affairs of the second house.
Seeing that Sang Wan did not notice her, Sang Rou felt secretly disappointed and hurriedly turned around to run away before Mrs. Li started her second round of scolding and yelling.
"Miss Wan, why have you come back again? Did you bring something for us?" Mrs. Li laughed dryly and sat down. She wanted to ask Mrs. Fang to pour a cup of tea, but when she looked up, she realized Mrs. Fang was already gone, presumably back to the kitchen.
She did not dare to let Sang Wan pour the tea, nor did she dare to openly instruct Liu Ya. She coughed and hinted with her eyes, but seeing that Liu Ya didn’t move and couldn’t grasp her meaning, she could only get up and pour a bowl herself, cursing silently: ’That stupid girl really lacks tact, not clever at all!’
Hearing this, Sang Wan no longer felt any emotional fluctuations or anger. Getting angry with them was simply not worth it.
She smiled faintly and said lightly, "I had some matters to attend to in Yangliu Town, so I took the opportunity to come back for a visit!"
"Oh, oh! What matters?" Mrs. Li giggled out of curiosity.
Sang Wan looked up and smiled lightly, saying, "I saw that the courtyard gate of my second aunt’s house was tightly closed, and I thought my uncle and aunt were not at home!"
Seeing that she did not elaborate, Mrs. Li knew she should not ask further and stopped there, smilingly chatting about family matters with Sang Wan.
Soon after, Second Master Sang and Sang Yan arrived, Mrs. Fang came in saying that the meal was ready, and everyone sat down to eat together.
Sang Wan instructed Mrs. Xu to give two big chicken legs to Sang Xiaoquan and Sang Xiaonuan. Mrs. Li immediately set her gaze on the two small chicken legs, picked one for herself, and quickly tossed another to Sang Yan, urging, "Eat, eat quickly!"
The couple devoured their food, and in front of them soon piled up a heap of chicken bones, some stripped clean, some not. Sang Yan sneaked a peek at Sang Wan, who was still eating elegantly and slowly, then glanced at her parents, feeling embarrassed about their manners; the rice and chicken in her mouth suddenly tasted bland as wax.
Sang Wan successfully completed the tasks assigned by Mrs. Wang and reported back one by one. Hearing about when Sang Wan’s sister-in-law’s wedding would take place, Mrs. Wang was delighted and kept laughing, saying their aunt grandmother was too polite! She also instructed Sang Wan to be a good host when the time comes.
Sang Wan agreed to it all.
However, just two days later, the servant Lan Xiang, who had gone with Gu Fangzi’s family, returned in plain clothes, without any hairpins, crying and sobbing, and said, "Master Gu has died!"
Mrs. Wang and Sang Wan were both stunned at once. Of course, their feelings were absolutely different.
Gu Jin, dead?
"What happened? How, how could he suddenly die?" Mrs. Wang stammered.
Wiping her tears, Lan Xiang explained, "A few days ago, Master Gu got drunk, fell, and hit his head on a stone, and, and he died!"
"Oh no!" Mrs. Wang gripped her forehead, "What should we do, what to do!"
Seeing Mrs. Wang distraught and Lan Xiang continually wiping away tears, Sang Wan said, "Mother, the deceased should be respected. We should think about how to handle the funeral! Who else is left in the Gu Family? The young cousin is still young and has never dealt with such a major event; she must be at a loss right now!"
"Right, right, you’re making sense!" Mrs. Wang hurriedly responded, "Let’s send the housekeeper and a few others over to help. Whatever the arrangements may cost, just go ahead with it! Who else has the authority to handle affairs in the Gu Family? They are all unreliable! Mrs. Jiang, arrange for two experienced matrons to accompany Fangzi and console her!" She then instructed Lan Xiang, "Enough crying, you go down too and follow the housekeeper back later, take good care of your young mistress! Understand?"
"Yes, this servant understands! Miss said she would come to kowtow to you, madam, after the matters are settled!" Lan Xiang kowtowed and went down, and Mrs. Jiang also hurried down to arrange things.
"The whims of fate are truly unpredictable!" Mrs. Wang sighed. As someone of advanced years, her heart could hardly bear the impact from separations and deaths; even though she didn’t like Gu Jin in the past, she could not help but shed a few tears.
Seeing this, Sang Wan quickly comforted her, alongside Mrs. Li consoling her for a while.
"Miss, what’s done is done, it’s all fate, you shouldn’t think too much!" Mrs. Li, seeing that Mrs. Wang had calmed down somewhat, continued to console her. Changing the subject, she sighed, "What to do now! Should we still go on with the wedding of the young cousin?"
Yes, how could I forget about this!
Mrs. Wang’s brow furrowed, troubled for a moment.
There’s no such rule that allows a daughter to marry right after her father’s death! The common sense and ethics of the world doesn’t dictate it this way!
"What else can we do?" sighed Mrs. Wang, drained, "Stop everything! Let’s not prepare anymore! It would only make us a laughingstock! Besides, it doesn’t look right either!"
"Yes, I will go arrange that right away!" Mrs. Li also sighed, adding, "Ah, this young cousin really has bad luck!"
Mrs. Wang was touched, recalling how Gu Fangzi lost her mother in her childhood and now her father had died just before her wedding, truly what bad luck she had, and she nodded in agreement, "You’re right, Fangzi certainly has had a rough fate."
Mrs. Li spoke implicitly, "Hopefully when she enters this household, the young master’s good fortune can offset her bad luck!"
Mrs. Wang was taken aback, her expression suddenly changed, the words "causing the death of her mother and father" subconsciously flashing through her mind, and naturally followed by the words "causing the death of her husband."
"Alright, I want to be alone for a while, you all may go," Mrs. Wang, despondent, gave a firm instruction, "Pack up all the previous preparations, let’s talk about this later!"
Despite the worries in her mind, the fact remained that Gu Fangzi was her dearly loved niece, raised by her side for many years; Mrs. Wang still couldn’t bring herself to the decision of not taking her in.
