Chapter 226: Chapter 199: Such Great Resentment
If this hadn’t happened, they would never let their daughter go so far, no matter what. But North City is just so small—if the child stays here, the circle is too narrow, and it’s filled with familiar faces. This makes them feel uncomfortable, and seeing her unhappy also pains them.
Moreover, they considered that Shasha’s best friend is also in Beijing. That might provide some support. By then, her friend could talk to her more, help her process everything, and hopefully, Shasha might be able to move on from that relationship quicker.
After all, she’s still young, and there are plenty of outstanding young men in Beijing. The options are broader there. Who knows? Maybe she could even find a boyfriend who suits her better and bring him back.
Because of this, the Bai family’s elders underwent intense internal debates before finally agreeing to let their daughter intern in Beijing. Since she wants to go, they mobilized family and friends to help her reach out to various workplaces.
As luck would have it, Bai Shasha’s eldest uncle happened to have an old comrade whose son works as an editor-in-chief at a magazine. That connection naturally led to Bai Shasha being offered an internship there.
If her performance during the internship is outstanding, there’s a good chance she’ll be offered a permanent position afterward, with great pay and benefits. This prospect settled her parents’ minds, even if only slightly.
"Yufan, I watched you grow up. Your mother and I were the closest at work! If I didn’t genuinely like you as a person, even if your family had intentions back then, I wouldn’t have agreed to it!
As for Shasha, she’s always been an optimistic child, carefree. If it were just one isolated misunderstanding, I’d still scold her for jumping to conclusions. But this is clearly multiple signs all pointing in the same direction—that you’re entangled with that girl. So, what’s the point of saying all this in front of our family now?
And another thing: since Shasha has broken up with you, let’s end it peacefully. You’re both young, and there’s still a long road ahead for you. Shasha is about to leave for an internship out of town. Aunt Hui doesn’t want her departing with emotional baggage! Don’t you agree?"
"What? Out-of-town internship?"
Cao Yufan hadn’t expected things to escalate to this point. He had thought, after all this turmoil, he could wait until the May Day holiday, head back to school, and properly coax Shasha. Surely by then, her anger would subside. They’d had arguments before, hadn’t they? And hadn’t they always reconciled after a while?
Sure, this time seemed more serious. But deep down, he still believed Bai Shasha loved him. Even if she said they were breaking up, it couldn’t be for real—after all, they were already engaged, and both their parents got along so well!
Mrs. Bai sighed lightly and said, "Yufan, you should leave now. Take care of yourself in the future!" Without waiting for him to say anything else, she turned and walked back into the house.
The relationship between the two families could now only be superficially maintained after this incident. If Mrs. Bai said she wasn’t angry or didn’t blame him, that would be impossible.
But to make her scream and shout like a shrew—she couldn’t bring herself to do that either. This way was better. At least the issues were discovered before the marriage. At least it wasn’t too late! She could only console herself with this thought.
When she got home, Mr. Bai was agitatedly smoking on the balcony. Seeing her return, he asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
Mrs. Bai placed the shopping bag she was holding on the shoe cabinet and, after changing into slippers, glanced at Bai Shasha’s room. The door was tightly shut—who knows how heartbroken the child might be inside?
"I’m fine! But why are you smoking again? Didn’t you say you were quitting?" Mrs. Bai sat down on the sofa, throwing him a somewhat displeased look.
Mr. Bai crushed the half-smoked cigarette in the ashtray and sighed heavily, "I’m just feeling stressed, so I took a few puffs!"
Their daughter was about to leave them and go to such a faraway place. How could he feel at ease about it? Especially when she’s still emotionally wounded—his heart was truly unsettled.
Just then, Bai Shasha came out of her room. Her face showed no trace of sadness as she playfully hugged her mother’s shoulder. "Mom, look at Dad! He’s smoking again while you’re not around—it’s suffocating!"
Mrs. Bai felt relieved seeing her daughter’s cheerful demeanor. She shot her husband an annoyed glare, saying, "The both of us are tired from shopping—why don’t you go and cook already?"
Mr. Bai smiled good-naturedly and headed to the kitchen, leaving the mother and daughter to snuggle on the living room couch. Neither brought up the encounter with Cao Yufan; it was as though they had collectively decided to avoid that topic.
Still, Mrs. Bai couldn’t help asking, "Shasha, how’s Li Si doing in Beijing? When you get there, can she really help take care of you?"
In her memory, Li Si was a pitiable child, but she had recently found a boyfriend with decent prospects. Shasha had even attended her engagement party not long ago upon her invitation and returned saying that Li Si’s fiancé’s circumstances were particularly good!
Mrs. Bai wasn’t jealous—she merely felt it would benefit her daughter to spend more time with friends like that.
Don’t blame her for being pragmatic. It’s just the way society works. Even though she and her husband are government employees, their standard of living can only be considered middle-class. Comparing their lives to that of the wealthy—when everything is fine, it’s alright. But if something were to go wrong, they’d truly be insignificant.
