Chapter 166: The Third Task (4)

"No, I’m fine... But... could this be a sign that memories from my past will soon resurface?" Iris exclaimed. His panicked expression gradually turned into joy. Her eyes sparkled with newfound hope, and her smile widened.

"I hope so," Xavier replied, his voice filled with uncertainty. "But for now, let’s set that aside. You need to consider how you’ll approach your task."

Iris’ eyes widened as she suddenly remembered an important detail she had overlooked. "I need to speak with Justin and Gavriel," she said.

"Alright," Xavier said, rising from the bed to assist her.

As they stood, Iris looked at her surroundings. Iris feels unfamiliar with this place. She can’t help but ask, "Xavier, where are we? Are we in your apartment or at your resort?"

"We’re at the resort," Xavier clarified. "We need a quieter and more spacious location because Gavriel and the others are here..."

Nodding, Iris made her way toward the door. However, her steps faltered as she glanced outside through the window. The sky had grown slightly brighter. "Is it already morning?" she stammered, shocked by the realization that she had slept for so long.

Xavier followed her gaze and replied, "Yes. The sun was about to rise..."

"Looks like you’ll be waiting until nightfall to carry out your plan, right?" he asked curiously.

Iris turned to Xavier and said, "I don’t mind completing this during daylight. But before that, I must speak with Gavriel and Justin. They’ve both seen my target."

Without further delay, Iris walked outside and found Justin engaged in a lively conversation with Gavriel. She was taken aback by their closeness, noticing how Gavriel laughed at Justin’s not-so-funny joke.

Just as Iris prepared to approach them, Xavier’s hand landed on her shoulder, turning her toward him.

"Darling, you talk to them. I’ll be gone for a moment..." He whispered, his cold thumb gently caressing her cheek.

Iris nodded and smiled, well aware that Xavier couldn’t be involved in this case.

"I’ll call you when I’m done speaking with them," she assured him.

After watching Xavier disappear, she turned toward the sitting area and joined Gavriel and Justin.

Gavriel was the first to notice her, and he instantly tensed when he thought Xavier was in the room, still somewhat intimidated by him even now. However, he visibly relaxed when he saw that Xavier was not with them.

"Iris, are you feeling better now?" Gavriel asked, his gaze fixed on Iris across from them.

"Never better," Iris replied, smiling before continuing, "Have you guys met the Mafia Lord?"

"Indeed, we met him," Justin answered Iris’s question. "This man is slippery. He eludes the authorities effectively as he conceals himself and his crimes. He lives like a king in District Five and also controls the sale of weapons and drugs in District Six, too."

Suddenly, Iris was taken aback to hear Justin reply. She didn’t read about this in Lucian’s report. Or did she miss it?

"You mean the owner of the X Bar at Whispering Alley, this mafia lord?" Iris recalled her first visit to Whispering Alley when she had tried to purchase a gun and had been attacked by a red-haired man and his man.

"So you know about X Bar..." Justin’s eyes narrowed in surprise. He remembered Xavier mentioning Iris’s past life as an assassin, so he understood why she had gone there.

"Yeah, I know that place. I’ve been there and beaten a few..." Iris’s voice trailed off, seeing no need to talk about the details of that night.

"Damn it! So, the people behind the empty shop at Whispering Alley..." The memory was still vivid in Justin’s mind, the day Xavier had instructed them to clean up the place, and they had discovered numerous lifeless bodies.

Iris could only nod. She had recently learned from Xavier that he had killed everyone who had tried to harm her that night. She realized Justin was referring to the individuals who had died on the desolate street.

"Alright, let’s not dwell on that," Iris said, shaking her head. She then turned to Gavriel.

"Have you figured out what kind of creature is protecting the Mafia Lord?" Iris asked curiously.

She didn’t care about the other details; she only wanted to learn this. If her opponent was human, she could complete her mission swiftly. Still, if a formidable being shielded the Mafia Lord, it would be a different story.

"Demons!" Gavriel’s words hit Iris like a ton of bricks. So, what she fears becomes a reality, and she will face a Demon.

She had previously researched demons on the internet, but the information had left her more confused than ever. She didn’t put much stock in those articles and needed to hear from Gavriel or Xavier about demons and how to deal with them.

Iris fell into a momentary silence, her gaze fixed on the brightening sky as the sun ascended. She considered whether to attack now or wait until nightfall.

After a while, she turned to Gavriel. "Could you please explain the weaknesses of these Demons? I need that information to formulate a plan."

Gavriel promptly shared several crucial insights about Demons and their vulnerabilities. It wasn’t only Gavriel; Justin also contributed valuable information to Iris.

Yet, even with her newfound knowledge about Demons and her target, Iris struggled to decide. She worked with the idea of a straightforward approach. However, she also didn’t want to kill many people, but just one, her target.

"The best time to strike the Mafia Lord is during daylight," Gavriel advised, aiming to alleviate her confusion.

Iris found this surprising and couldn’t resist asking, "Why now?"

"Because the Demon protecting the Mafia is weaker during the day. At night, it gains strength, and you could be in grave danger, considering that your mind controller is presumably still vulnerable..." Gavriel’s words made Iris swallow hard, the weight of the situation sinking in.

Silence hung in the air once more.

Iris knows Demons will attack their mental mind. If she is not ready, then she will be affected.
