Chapter 632: Chapter 615 Relief

After the couple left the house, Lu Shan lowered his voice and said, "Dama, how can we take Auntie’s house on Radiance Road? You can’t buy that house for less than seventy or eighty thousand."

Dama said, "Auntie has already offered it to us, so it would be rude to refuse. There are many rooms over there, and when Grandpa gets out of the hospital, we can bring him back to live with us."

Lu Shan shook his head and said, "No need. Auntie said that after Grandpa is discharged, he’ll be sent back to the house in Chaoyang to recuperate. At that time, we can hire two caregivers and a nanny, and we can visit him with the kids regularly."

Dama glared at Shanzi, "I said you have a wooden head, and you really do. Auntie arranged it this way to avoid giving us trouble, but Grandpa is sick and will definitely want to live with family. It would be so lonely only seeing caregivers and a nanny every day and not having family around."

Lu Shan thought it over and agreed, "In that case, we can ask Grandpa where he’d like to live."

Dama said, "No need to ask, just bring him home after he’s discharged. If he feels it’s too noisy later on, he can go back to Chaoyang."

Lu Shan had no objections.

The next day Lu Jiaguang went to the hospital and saw that only the caregivers and Xing Ziyang were in the ward; Lu Jiaxin and Lu Shan weren’t there. Upon inquiring, he found out that Lu Jiaxin had taken an early flight back to Hong Kong.

Xing Ziyang said, "Something came up in Hong Kong that needs the boss to handle, but once it’s sorted, the boss will be back. As for Comrade Lu Shan, he’s at the housing authority."

"What’s he doing at the housing authority?"

Xing Ziyang smiled and said, "My boss gifted the house on Radiance Road to Comrade Lu Shan, and today he and his wife, along with a lawyer, are there to handle the transfer."

Of course, there was a condition to gifting the house: it could only be lived in and not sold.

Lu Jiaguang knew something was up when he heard this because otherwise, Jiaxin wouldn’t just hand over the house on Radiance Road to Shanzi out of the blue: "When Shanzi gets to the hospital, have him give me a call."

"Sure."

After handling the transfer at the housing authority, the next step was moving. Dama said, "Shanzi, I’ll have Mom start packing, and we’ll hire movers the day after tomorrow."

Ever since news got out about Lu Hongjun being arrested, people in the residential building have been giving them strange looks. A friendly neighbor quietly told them that some people thought Lu Hongjun’s wrongdoing meant the house should be taken back, saying it’s unfair for a leech to occupy such a big house.

Maizi knew that these people were only talking and not taking action because the verdict wasn’t out yet. Once it’s decided that Grandpa is guilty, they won’t be able to live there anymore. Now that the house on Radiance Road is in their name, it’s best to move soon and not deal with the residents’ judgments any longer.

"Okay."

As soon as Maizi arrived at the residential building, she saw an old lady giving her a disdainful look and commenting in Mandarin, asking how this family still had the nerve to live there.

Normally, Maizi would have held back, especially as they hadn’t secured a suitable house and didn’t know when they could move. But since they were moving in a few days, there was no need to tolerate it silently.

Maizi looked at the old lady, smiled insincerely, and said, "We’re moving out this week. But even if we vacate, it won’t be your family moving in."

Aunt Zhao’s face darkened.

A neighbor who got along with Dama was off work that day, and while she’d just returned with groceries and was chatting in the courtyard, she heard this and asked with concern, "Dama, is there an update on your grandfather’s situation?"

Dama said energetically, "No, my Auntie felt that the atmosphere in the residential area was bad for the kids’ growth, so she gave us the house on Radiance Road."

Moving to Radiance Road also means they’d have to transfer Dabao and Nannan to new schools, but the school there was conveniently right across the street. Unlike here, where there was a distance from the school causing the kids hardship in winter.

The people gathered around chatting were surprised by this, and the neighbor asked, "Are you saying Jiaxin gave you the house on Radiance Road?"

Dama patted her bag and beamed, "Yes, we just went for the transfer today and just got the property deed."

She finished by deliberately turning her nose up at Aunt Zhao. Furious that they lived in such a big house, now they’d be moving into an even better one, which would surely make that old lady even more angry.

Back home, Dama asked her mom to start packing, "Let’s get everything packed up in the next couple of days and move the day after tomorrow. There’s a big yard over there, so the kids will have space to play."

Over there, the neighbors wouldn’t act snide, even if they knew about Grandpa’s situation. After Lu Hongjun was arrested, Dama’s mom felt too embarrassed to take Gou Sheng out to play.

Dama’s mom agreed happily. She was upset when she heard that they’d lose the house to the government, but unexpectedly, they got the house on Radiance Road instead. She had visited that house several times when Lu Jiazong and his family lived there. Not to mention the appliances, old people liked the spacious and grounded feel of living in a flat much more.

When Lu Shan arrived at the hospital and got Lu Jiaguang’s message, he went out to make a phone call. "Yes, Auntie said the house in the residential area needs to be returned to the government. The Radiance Road house was vacant and might become run-down without anyone living in it, so she gave it to us since we had nowhere else to stay."

Lu Jiaguang knew that Jiaxin was sympathetic to this nephew, which is why she gave them the house: "Returning the house in the residential area to the government, was that your aunt’s decision or your grandfather’s sentence outcome?"

Lu Shan found a secluded spot to make the call. After checking around to make sure no one was nearby, he lowered his voice and said, "Auntie said that Grandpa’s misdeeds of trafficking goods were proven with evidence. However, considering Grandpa is demented and bedridden, he won’t be sentenced, but all welfare benefits will be canceled. The residential house has to be handed back, pensions will stop, and medical expenses won’t be reimbursed."

Lu Jiaguang was both shocked and relieved, "Is that all?"

The cancellation of a pension and medical expense reimbursements and the loss of a house would feel catastrophic for a normal family, but for Third Uncle, it wasn’t much of a concern since with Jiaxin’s help, his later years would still be secure.

Lu Shan wasn’t sure if that was all, "That’s all Auntie told me. Oh, and Grandpa’s case is on record, so Gou Dan and Gou Sheng can’t join the military or work for government institutions in the future."

Lu Jiaguang thought this outcome was already quite favorable, "They just can’t join the military or government, but they can still go to college. They can become doctors, lawyers, or go into business. Shanzi, think about what your life was like six years ago and how it is now."

Six years ago, he and Dama were farming in the countryside, and they couldn’t have dreamed that they would not only get residency in the Forty-nine City but also own a big house and a large shop.

Lu Jiaguang said, "Shanzi, be content. Yes, adopting under Third Uncle’s name means the children can’t join the military or enter government work. But they can get the best education, and getting into college is much easier here than back in the hometown. Once they graduate from a good college, they can find good jobs."

Lu Ping and Lu An were able to get into university partly because they received the best education and also because the admission scores in the Forty-nine City are lower than in other provinces. It would have been difficult for them to get into college from their hometown.

Listening to these words, Lu Shan had an epiphany and immediately apologized, saying he misunderstood.

Lu Jiaguang reminded him, "Always be vigilant, or you’ll end up like your father."

Lu Shan shivered and swore he’d never be like his father.
