Chapter 63: Ch 63: A Hint of Trouble - Part 4
The girl stiffened as Anna blocked her path, but after a few silent moments, she straightened her back and gripped the bottle tighter in her fist.
"I’m not going back. I... I’ve fallen for your companion. I want to spend the night with him. This might be my only chance."
She said, her voice trembling slightly, but determined.
Anna blinked. For a second, she thought she misheard. Her mouth fell slightly open in disbelief.
"What?"
The girl took a shaky breath.
"I’ve seen him around. He’s strong, he’s quiet, and he’s got that look in his eyes. I can’t just do nothing."
Anna stared at her, dumbfounded. Then, slowly, she shook her head and stepped forward.
"You need to turn around. Right now. Before you do something stupid."
The girl’s expression changed instantly. Her frustration bubbled up, her voice sharp and accusing.
"Why do you care? You said it yourself earlier, didn’t you? There’s nothing between you two. If that’s the case, then you don’t have any right to tell me what to do."
Anna flinched at that. The words cut deeper than she expected.
Her hands clenched at her sides, and for one dangerous second, she imagined her fingers closing around the girl’s throat and squeezing until the jealousy twisting inside her went silent.
But she didn’t move.
She inhaled sharply and forced the anger down.
"You’re making a mistake. He’s not someone you just sneak into a room for. Especially not like this."
She said coldly.
The girl didn’t listen.
"I don’t care. This is my decision."
And before Anna could stop her, she turned and yanked open the door.
A flash of silver lunged out from the darkness.
Anna reacted instantly—her body moved on instinct. She grabbed the girl’s arm and yanked her back just in time as a sword slashed through the space the girl’s neck had just been.
The girl screamed and stumbled, nearly falling as Anna pushed her behind.
"What the hell?! What is that?! What’s going on?!"
She gasped, her face pale and terrified, clutching at her chest.
From inside the dimly lit room, a voice emerged—rough, groggy, but dangerously alert.
"I told you to give me a sign before entering."
Nova muttered as he stepped into view, shirtless and holding a now-lowered sword in one hand, his dark eyes locked onto the scene.
His gaze landed on the stranger behind Anna, and his eyes narrowed, sharpened.
The sheer weight of his aether, even if not fully awakened, pressed into the air around them like a blade resting on skin.
The unknown female’s eyes widened as his focus fell fully on her.
She tried to say something—anything—but nothing came out. Her breath caught. Her knees buckled.
And then she fainted.
Nova caught her before she hit the ground and raised an eyebrow.
"Who is this?"
Anna crossed her arms, trying to hide the burn of embarrassment and leftover rage.
"Some girl who thought she could seduce you in your sleep."
Nova looked down at the unconscious girl in his arms, then back at Anna.
"...Is this normal for this planet?"
Anna didn’t answer. She was too busy glaring daggers into the dirt.
Anna let out a sigh and knelt to scoop the unconscious girl into her arms.
"I’ll take her back to the reception. You go get some rest."
She muttered, avoiding Nova’s gaze.
Nova didn’t argue. He simply nodded, stepped back into the room, and shut the door behind him.
The corridor was quiet as Anna carried the stranger through the dim halls, her steps echoing faintly in the silence.
When she finally reached the small reception lounge, the bored worker at the front desk glanced up with mild surprise.
"She fainted. Can you keep an eye on her?"
Anna explained, setting the girl carefully on one of the couches.
The worker gave a lazy nod.
"Sure. Happens more often than you think."
Anna rolled her eyes, turned to leave—only to hear a sudden sharp inhale behind her. She turned around to find the once-unconscious girl blinking awake, her expression dazed.
"You okay? You fainted outside our room. That sword could’ve killed you."
Anna asked, stepping closer.
The girl didn’t respond right away. Then, slowly, her lips curved into a dreamy smile.
"That... was the most thrilling moment of my life."
Anna froze.
"What?"
The girl sat up, looking completely invigorated.
"I’ve never felt adrenaline like that. That sheer danger. The look in his eyes... That man is incredible. I think—I know—I’m even more in love with him now!"
Anna stared at her, completely dumbfounded.
"Are you insane?"
The girl clutched her chest dramatically.
"Maybe. But love doesn’t follow reason."
Anna didn’t even bother replying. She just rubbed her temples, turned on her heel, and walked off.
"She’s lost her mind."
She muttered to herself, quickening her pace back to the room.
The next morning arrived with soft sunlight pouring through the cracked window.
Nova sat at the small table in the corner of the room, chewing on the rather tasteless rations the shelter provided.
Anna had cleaned the place so well it barely felt like the same room anymore. She was still asleep, curled up with a blanket, mumbling softly under her breath.
A knock came at the door.
Nova stood, expecting a worker, but was surprised to find Malrik instead, his expression unusually serious.
"Breakfast?"
Nova asked, stepping aside.
Malrik shook his head.
"Not today. I’m here because Queen Eleysa and the Head Priest have summoned you."
Nova narrowed his eyes.
"Summoned?"
"They want to meet you formally. Probably to confirm for themselves whether the rumors are true. That you crossed the sacred barrier."
Nova leaned against the wall, arms crossed.
"And if I say no?"
Malrik smiled politely.
"Then they’ll assume the rumors are true anyway... and label you a threat."
There was a long pause.
Nova sighed and turned back toward the room.
"Let me finish eating. Then we’ll go."
Malrik nodded.
"I’ll be waiting outside. And Nova?"
"What?"
"Try not to threaten royalty. They’re a bit touchier than monsters."
His smile was playful—but something about it was laced with caution.
Nova watched Malrik walk away, the man’s warning lingering in the air. He returned to the table, picking up the last bit of his ration and finishing it without a word.
Behind him, Anna stirred, stretching with a yawn.
"Who was at the door?"
She mumbled.
"Malrik. The queen and the head priest want to meet me."
Nova replied, slipping his coat over his shoulders.
Anna sat up straight, suddenly alert.
"Seriously? That sounds like a trap."
Nova shrugged.
"Probably is."
"Are you going?"
"Of course. I feel like they would know more about the core than anyone else."
He tightened the strap on his gloves.
Anna frowned.
"Still... be careful."
Nova glanced at her and offered a rare smirk.
"Always am."
As he headed for the door, Anna stood and grabbed his sleeve.
"Nova... if anything goes wrong—"
"It won’t. Watch the room. I’ll be back before you get bored. And, get ready to run any second I give you the signal."
He gently pulled away.
Anna watched him disappear down the hallway, the weight in her chest growing heavier. She didn’t trust the queen or that smug priest.
Not even Malrik entirely. And though Nova walked confidently toward danger, part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to go very, very wrong.
