Chapter 59: Ch 59: The Chosen Ones - Part 6
Queen Eleysa’s heels echoed sharply through the marble corridor as she made her way toward the palace dungeons.
The air grew colder the deeper she went, and the guards standing outside the final cell bowed stiffly as she passed.
Inside, her twin sister sat chained to the wall, the same face as hers—only harder, more weathered by years of confinement and bitterness.
Gorgon lifted her head slowly, amusement flickering in her narrowed eyes.
"To what do I owe the honor, dear sister? Decided to finally execute me?"
Queen Eleysa’s tone was sharp.
"Have you ever heard of an outsider crossing the temple’s holy shield?"
Gorgon raised an eyebrow.
"No. No outsider ever has. Not once in Callexian history."
Eleysa’s voice tightened.
"But could it happen? Theoretically?"
Gorgon leaned back with a slow smile.
"The gods don’t always think like us. If someone met a god’s criterion, it’s possible—even an outsider might be welcomed."
Eleysa’s jaw clenched. NovelFire
"And what is the criterion?"
Silence. Gorgon stared at her sister, defiant, lips sealed. That silence was an answer in itself.
Fury surged behind Eleysa’s eyes. She turned on her heel and stormed out. If her sister wouldn’t answer, then Commander Malrik would.
The next morning, the grand court chamber was filled. Officials and nobles sat around the circular room, all focused on the single man standing in the center: Commander Malrik.
His usual cheerful expression was gone, replaced by a calm resolve.
Queen Eleysa sat at her throne, hands clasped beneath her chin.
"You brought an outsider into the temple grounds. You let him cross the holy shield. Explain yourself, Commander."
She began, voice clear and firm. Malrik met her gaze.
"Yes, Your Majesty. I did."
Gasps rang through the court.
"I had a strong feeling that the gods would accept him. I trusted that instinct. And I was right."
He continued.
One of the senior ministers stood up. NovelFire
"And what if you were wrong? What then? Would you risk desecrating the sacred temple on a whim?"
"I would have taken responsibility."
Malrik replied evenly.
"But it wasn’t a whim. I’ve worked under the temple’s energy for years. I’ve trained those who hear the gods’ whispers. And I’ve never felt a presence so closely aligned with divine will as his."
Another courtier scoffed.
"Words. There are protocols—"
"But it worked. The holy shield let him through. That alone proves his worth. If the gods themselves accepted him, what right do we have to question their will?"
Malrik said, his voice rising above the muttering crowd.
The court fell silent.
Queen Eleysa studied him carefully.
"You believe this ’Nova’ is someone the gods favor?"
"I do. And I believe ignoring that would be a greater mistake than any risk I took."
A long pause followed. Some nobles exchanged uncertain glances, while others remained visibly unsettled.
Finally, Queen Eleysa spoke, her tone colder than before.
"So be it. The gods have spoken. But this matter is far from over, Commander. Keep a close eye on this outsider. If he strays, if he falters, if the gods change their mind—you will answer for it."
Malrik bowed.
"I understand, Your Majesty."
As he exited the chamber, whispers trailed behind him. Many were angry. Others afraid. But none could deny the truth: the gods had accepted an outsider.
And now, all of Callex would have to decide what that meant.
As Malrik turned to leave the royal court, the tension in the room did not ease. Instead, it boiled over.
"This is outrageous! An outsider? Not even of noble blood? And he’s allowed into the holiest ground of our people?"
One noble snapped, slamming his palm on the ornate railing.
Several others echoed the sentiment. Voices clashed and overlapped.
Fear, indignation, and pride swirled like a storm threatening to erupt. The foreigner’s acceptance by the divine shook the very foundation of their cultural beliefs.
"Our identity as the chosen of the gods will be questioned. If word of this spreads to the public, it could shatter the faith of thousands. They’ll think anyone could walk into the gods’ embrace!"
An older councilwoman added gravely.
Queen Eleysa remained still. Her hands rested on her lap, her eyes unreadable. Then, calmly but firmly, she addressed the court.
"The gods permitted this outsider. That is not my doing, nor yours. I will not oppose their decision."
The room quieted for a moment—only for the silence to be broken again by another noble.
"Then what are we to do, Your Majesty?"
Queen Eleysa’s gaze turned cold.
"You may do as you see fit. But do not involve the crown."
That one sentence lit a spark.
The nobles exchanged glances, and understanding passed between them like lightning. If the queen would not interfere, they would take matters into their own hands.
The next morning, just as the sun crested over Callex’s misty peaks, Nova was already moving. He preferred the quiet of early hours.
Not many people were out, the market squares were still mostly empty, and the city hadn’t yet awakened to the pressures of survival.
His boots padded softly on the stone path leading toward the temple district. Nyx’s voice spoke in his ear, her tone as crisp as always.
[The aether readings are different today. The presence of the core of reason is steady again. But there was a strange surge yesterday for several minutes.]
She said.
Nova frowned.
"Keep digging. Check for anything you can find on what triggered that spike."
[Already running scans. The surge seems... emotional, not mechanical. As if something responded to a deep feeling.]
Nova’s brow twitched, but he didn’t comment further.
"Let me know if you find anything."
[Will do.]
Her presence faded back into the system, and Nova continued down the quiet street.
It wasn’t long before he sensed something. Aether—familiar, confident, warm—moving in his direction. He didn’t even need to turn. The footsteps were too easy to place now.
"Early morning walks? You’re starting to act like a local."
Malrik’s voice came with a grin.
Nova finally turned, facing the knight captain who was walking toward him with a half-eaten fruit in one hand and his long cloak thrown lazily over his shoulder.
"You’re up early."
Nova said simply.
Malrik laughed.
"I don’t sleep much. Comes with being responsible for half a city’s defense and trying to keep young knights from stabbing interesting guests."
He tossed the fruit core into a nearby bin and gestured for Nova to walk with him.
They moved side by side toward the edge of the temple district, Malrik seeming much more relaxed than during the training sessions.
"I figured you’d be sleeping in after yesterday’s chaos."
Malrik added, glancing sideways at Nova.
Nova shrugged.
"I like the quiet. Less noise. Less judgment."
"Ah. You mean fewer priests calling you unworthy."
Malrik grinned knowingly.
Nova didn’t answer that, and the silence was enough.
After a pause, Malrik’s voice turned more serious.
"There’s unrest brewing in the court. The nobles are stirred up about yesterday. They feel... insulted."
"I can guess."
Nova said calmly.
"They see the gods as their property. Their status. You being accepted by the divine without noble blood? It breaks their narrative."
Nova smirked faintly.
"Good."
Malrik stopped walking for a second, turning to face him directly.
"I don’t say this as a warning, but as a friend—be careful. The court doesn’t like to feel powerless. If they decide to move against you, they’ll make it quiet... and deadly."
"This won’t be my first time in such a situation. You don’t need to worry about me."
Nova replied without flinching.
Malrik studied him for a long second before nodding.
"I figured as much. Still—keep your weapon close. And maybe don’t walk alone every morning."
Nova’s eyes flicked up toward the temple gates in the distance.
"I’ll be fine."
The two stood in silence for a moment before Malrik sighed and clapped Nova on the back.
"Well, I’ll walk with you today. Just to keep the priests from exploding again."
Nova didn’t say anything, but he didn’t stop Malrik from following either.
Behind them, high above in the towers of Callex, hidden eyes were already watching. The court had made their decision.
And Nova’s trial on Callex was only beginning.
