Chapter 182: Old Grudges Settled
Igaris stepped into the meeting room, Evernight walking behind him with graceful silence, her presence calm and steady like a loyal queen.
He had already confirmed their identities using the Architect’s Eyes.
But seeing them in person still sent a wave of emotion through him.
When his gaze met the eyes of the man standing by the far wall, a flicker of guilt passed through Igaris’s usually unreadable expression.
"Brother!"
A soft voice broke the silence.
The little girl leapt off the sofa and rushed toward him, only to stop a few steps away. Her wide eyes studied him, hesitation written across her face.
This was Isadora—the one who had always clung to him with warmth and childish wonder in his first Dive.
But now, she seemed unsure.
"You look so different," she said, her voice trembling. "Are you really not my brother Igor? Was my Father telling the truth?"
Igaris crouched down so their eyes were level. He reached out and gently placed a hand on her head, brushing her hair with a tenderness he rarely showed.
He looked into her eyes—still innocent, yet far too sharp for her age.
"They are right," he said quietly. "I am not the same brother you once knew."
Her shoulders sank. Tears welled in her eyes. The realization struck her like a blade.
The brother she remembered was gone, swallowed by a world too cruel and vast for her to understand.
Her breath hitched as the first sob escaped.
But then, Igaris spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper, yet clear as sunlight through storm clouds.
"...But I could be your brother again, if you want me to."
The little girl froze. Her lips quivered, and the tears that had begun to fall now streamed freely.
Then she threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly, her small arms barely able to wrap around his armored chest.
"I want that!" she cried. "I really do!"
Behind them, his parents stood in stunned silence. The man’s stern expression cracked with emotion, and the woman covered her mouth, eyes glassy with tears.
Igaris held the girl close, closing his eyes for a brief moment.
For the first time in a long while, Igaris remembered what it felt like to be an older brother.
To have someone look at him not as a weapon, not as a ruler, not as an overlord, but simply as family.
He held Isadora quietly, her soft sobs muffled against his chest.
Across the room, his parents, Roxxane and Vireon, stood frozen in silence. Their eyes observed the man he had become.
The boy who once ran away in grief and guilt now stood at the peak of this world. No longer the shadown of their Son .
He was now a sovereign. An Overlord.
"I am really sorry for misunderstanding you, Igaris," Vireon finally said, his voice heavy with emotion. "Back then, I was blinded. I was furious. I even wanted to kill you. But whay else could I have done? You cannot understand how a father feels when he believes his son was stolen from him."
His fists trembled at his sides, and for a moment, he could not meet Igaris’s eyes.
"But over time I began to understand. It was never your fault. You did not take Igor’s life. You tried to save it. You tried to bring him back among us. That was something I failed to see."
Vireon stepped forward and lowered his head.
"So I, Vireon Stormborn, hold no grudge against you anymore."
A soft sniffle came from Roxxane as she moved beside her husband.
"Please forgive him, Igaris. Forgive both of us. I know I no longer have the right to call you my son, but from one mother to another mother’s child, this is my sincere request."
Her voice was quiet, yet it carried years of sorrow.
Igaris remained silent for a moment.
The quiet in the room was heavy, but not cold.
He slowly stood up, letting Isadora cling to his side. His eyes met theirs. No longer hollow, but still deep and unreadable.
"You were in pain," he said softly. "And so was I. We were all broken by what happened back then."
He paused, his voice steady.
"But I do not hate you."
Both Roxxane and Vireon trembled at his words.
"You do not need to call me your son," he continued, glancing down at the little girl beside him. "But if you wish to see me not as a stranger, then I will allow that. For her sake, and for yours."
Isadora looked up with wide, teary eyes and smiled, clutching his hand tighter.
Roxxane wiped her tears, smiling shakily. Vireon gave a firm nod, finally feeling a long-frozen weight melt from his chest.
And so, something broken long ago began to heal. Slowly, quietly.
---
"Sister-in-law, can you tell my brother that I want to follow him to his world? I want to see what it looks like," Isadora said, clinging to Evernight’s tall frame like a little koala.
Evernight looked down at the small girl wrapped around her waist. Surprisingly, she wasn’t annoyed at all. Instead, she gently ruffled Isadora’s soft black hair, her heart instantly melting at the word "sister-in-law."
It was the first time anyone had called her that.
But after a moment, she gave a slow shake of her head.
"I can’t, Isadora. Your brother already said no. And when he says no... It’s means there’s no second option."
"Why?" Isadora’s voice trembled. "Is it because I’m not really his sister anymore? Does he not love me now?"
Her little heart felt like it was being squeezed, her grip on Evernight tightening.
Evernight crouched down to meet her at eye level, her expression gentle and motherly.
"No, sweet one. That’s not the reason at all," she said, brushing Isadora’s bangs behind her ear. "Your brother loves you deeply. That hasn’t changed. He just can’t take you with him right now."
"Why not?"
"Because the world he’s going to is at war with a powerful Empire. It’s dangerous. He’s scared that you might get hurt. You’re precious to him... too precious to risk."
Isadora bit her lip, blinking back her tears.
"But... one day?"
Evernight smiled and nodded. "Yes. One day, when the war is over and the skies are clear, he might open the gate for you. And when that day comes, you’ll get to see everything he’s built with your own eyes."
"Really?" Isadora’s eyes lit up, her sadness slowly replaced with hope.
"Really," Evernight said, hugging her tightly. "Until then, be strong for him. So that when he returns, he sees the brave little sister he’s always loved."
