Chapter 46: A man of God.
(At a random mansion in the middle of a snowy mountain.)
’Father, can vee trust ze like of heem?’
’Trust me darling? No vee can’t, but he is best man for job.’’
’’Bring him in.’’
The door opens and it’s the cowboy walking slowly towards the side of the table where a woman and fat man are eating.
"Ma’am, sir, I’m at yer service.’
’Tobais Creed. Correct?’
’The only one.’
’Vee hope so. I vant you do to job for me.’
’Gladly sir, for the gold you’ve offered me. I’d kill anyone for you.’’
’No killing. Just bring him here. To me.’
’All that gold, and no bloodshed?’
’You heard him, he said no killing.’
’Calm down Yana. Excuse my dorter she... has very short temper you see.’
’No trouble at all. Apologies ma’am.’
’Good. Now don’t kill the target. Once you have him, you bring him to me. Understand?’
’Understood.’
The woman slides a photo of Amari across the table and Tobais grabs it. He examines it and looks at the man.
’Is this him? He looks pretty young, doesn’t he?’
’He is, but very dangerous. He cost good money, so bring him back in good health.’’
’Oh. So, he’s a slave?’
’Da, our slave. He run away. I will punish him once he gets back.’
’Have to say, this has to be my weirdest job yet.’
’Go now, do your job. One of my men will give you information on the rest of the job.’
’Okay, I’ll be back to you in a few days. May God be with you.’
Tobais leaves the room.
’I don’t trust him, have some men follow him.’
’No. Let the man do his job Yana. That’s why we pay him for.’
After leaving the room he meets another man who’s wait for him.
’Creed?’
’I’m guessing you’re the guy to help me with finding this kid.’
’Yes.’
He shows him where Amari has been for the past few months. And told him about the three men who have failed to attain him. He tries his best to explain in a way that Creed can understand.
’Okay, he seems like he’s a problem, but nothing I can’t solve.’
’Da. You understand?’
’Barely, but I get the gist of it.’
The man gives him a thumbs up and smile, he smiles back awkwardly.
’Where do you guy pray?’
’Yes, come.’
The man leads him to a room where the family prays.
’Pray?’
’Yes, I do nothing without asking the Lord to protect me.’
’Yes.’
The man shows him to the room and Creed enters the room. He heads to the front where there is a cushion for kneeling when praying. He starts praying for a few minutes and leaves the room. Before he leaves the mansion, the man stops him, and a crow flies to his hand.
’This will help... help you find za kid.’
’By God did I just hear the thing speak or was it just me?’
’No, it can speak... you understand, yes?’
’Yeah, I do.’
The man lets the crow fly and Creed follows after it.
...
(At Scyl Village.)
A group of men rush into the King’s chambers, where he is looking over the village through his window.
’Your Majesty!’
’What’s going on out there?’
’There’s a terrorist out there. He’s already killed five men. We should be getting you to the safe room.’
’How many of them are there?’
’We don’t know. So far, there’s only been one reported.’
’And have you heard from my brother?’
’No, the last time I saw him was at the crime scene. I don’t know where he disappeared to afterward.’
’Okay. Thank you. You may leave my chambers.’
’But sir—’
’I said you may leave.’
The guards leave the room. The guard sent by Erling arrives at the castle and starts spreading the orders given to him.
The King returns to looking at what’s unfolding outside his window.
(12 years ago, at Scyl Village.)
Ivar is daydreaming on his balcony, looking at a totally different village from the one in the present. Without walls and with nature looking brighter than the current Scyl Village.
Taking a deep breath, Erling jumps behind him, shocking him.
’Hey, brother, what’s on your mind?’
’Could you please stop doing that?!’
’You’ve been way too serious recently. You should calm down a bit.’
’I know. It’s just... I’m worried about Father. His sickness is becoming worse.’
’I know. And he doesn’t want you to use your gift to help him.’
’Yeah, I don’t know why. We’ve even tried the best doctors around.’
’What about that young doctor Van Galen? Have you heard from him?’
’Not yet. He is still aiding people infected by this virus in other nations.’
’What should we do?’
’I don’t know. I just don’t want Father to die. Not yet.’
’Why? Did you see something?’
’Nothing you need to worry yourself about.’
’Come. Let’s get out of this place. We shouldn’t depress ourselves any longer.’
They take a walk around the castle grounds.
’Let’s focus on the better things in our lives, shouldn’t we? Like you having your first child—with your wife.’
’Yeah, that is good, I guess.’
’You guess? Shouldn’t you be more enthusiastic about something like this?’
’I guess I should be, but I just can’t be thinking about something that minuscule.’
’Minuscule?! Brother, tell me what’s the most important thing on your mind right now?’
’The health of Father, of course.’
’What about your loving and nurturing wife?’
’She’s fine. She’s healthy, and I make sure she eats healthy so the baby can come out healthy.’
’Do you even love her?’
’One can say I do, yes.’
’No, not technically. Do you actually love her?’
Ivar shakes his head. Erling throws his hand on his forehead.
’You married and had a kid with someone you don’t love? What’s wrong with you?’
’Father told me she would be a great wife, and she would be a great mother. So I married her.’
’You and Father. The blind leading the blind.’
’Whatever you say.’
