Chapter 819: Chapter 415: Smoking and Talking About the World
Chongba managed a wry smile and said, "The guy who brought you here is a Mirage Dragon! The ancestor of illusion techniques between Heaven and Earth, we’ve been fooled by him."
Qin Shou was rendered speechless...
Qin Shou then turned to the old man and said, "So... can you let my friend go now?"
"Go ahead." The old man nodded.
But Chongba didn’t move.
Qin Shou kicked him and asked, "What are you waiting for?"
Chongba sighed, stood up, and said, "Well... I’ll go back and wait for you."
Qin Shou nodded and said, "Go on, go on."
The old man said, "The Mirage Dragon will send him back, don’t worry, no one will hurt him."
Qin Shou nodded, then looked at the old man, and for a moment, he didn’t know what to say. Then, struck by a sudden idea, he pulled out some dirt from his pocket, which quickly crumbled and reformed in his hand into a pack of cigarettes. Qin Shou took one out and offered it, asking, "Smoke?"
The old man was utterly baffled by Qin Shou’s action!
Clearly, in his endless life, no one had ever offered him a cigarette, right?
However, Qin Shou was surprised as the old man nodded and incredibly skillfully took a cigarette. It lit itself without fire, and he then took a couple of puffs, blowing out a few smoke rings.
Seeing how practiced he was...
Qin Shou said, "Holy smoke, you are quite the chainsmoker, eh? My apologies!"
The old man chuckled and said, "The great path of heaven and earth encompasses everything. With enough understanding, many things come naturally. By the way, why don’t you smoke?"
Qin Shou chuckled, shook his head, and said, "Smoking is bad for your health, and I want to live a few more years, so no thanks."
The old man: "@#%..."
The old man stared at Qin Shou for a long time, then suddenly burst into laughter, "Hahaha... hah... amusing! Truly amusing! You Rabbit, are always and forever quite the scoundrel, aren’t you!"
Qin Shou was taken aback and said, "Always and forever? Have we met before?"
The old man laughed and said, "Let me tell you a story."
Qin Shou was stunned, but since he was already here and not about to be roasted and eaten, he figured he might as well fulfill the old man’s wish to tell a story.
The old man said, "Heaven and Earth were not inherently existent. Only after Pangu created Heaven and Earth did this world begin to take shape. With the world established, many gods, demons, and countless creatures thrived and propagated, resulting in everything you see now."
Qin Shou, completely confused, asked, "My lord, could you get to the point?"
The old man laughed and said, "The point? The point is, I existed before this world. Do you believe that?"
Qin Shou was astonished!
The old man stood up and said, "I say, there was a world before this one, do you believe that?"
Qin Shou was bewildered!
The old man continued, "And before that world, there were even more worlds, do you believe that?"
Qin Shou was utterly confounded!
The old man continued, "Beyond this world lies Huntun, within which are infinite worlds; this world of ours is but one among countless macrocosmic realms! By ’macrocosmic realms,’ I mean what you know as the Macrocosmic Realms—the collective term for countless smaller worlds!"
Qin Shou’s face was blank with confusion... He felt that today he might hear something extraordinary!
The old man, as if determined to shock, went on, "But actually, the countless worlds are just one world, understand?"
Qin Shou shook his head vigorously, asserting firmly, "I don’t!"
With a wave of his hand, the old man said, "Look at my hand, swinging from left to right. During this time, each moment actually contains a world, existing in the river of time. In the river of time, I can return to the past, or travel to the infinitely changing future... Our world also changes with time, and this process of change leaves behind countless worlds in the river of time.
To those in the past, we are the future world; to those in our future, we are the past world!"
Qin Shou was beginning to understand; it was somewhat akin to the multidimensional space theory discussed by humans.
However, clearly, the dimensions the old man spoke of were higher, so high that Qin Shou couldn’t comprehend them.
The old man continued, "Previously, these worlds had no center point; the past and the future were always relative. But later I discovered that the world does have a center! And this center point can determine the life and death, the rise and fall of both past and future!"
Qin Shou’s heart trembled, and he asked, "You’re not talking about now, are you?"
The old man nodded, "Exactly, it’s now!"
Qin Shou grimaced and said, "This... What does this have to do with us now? If the future is good, you might as well go to a future you like and live out your days in ease."
The old man shook his head, "Infinite change is actually no change at all. If one cannot control this primal world, then the infinite worlds are merely as illusory as bubbles and shadows. Walking through the river, I have left behind countless incarnations, but at my level of power, I have long since merged the myriad versions of myself across time and space into one. I am me; the world exists with me in it, and if I am not there, then it ceases to exist!"
Qin Shou, astonished, said, "You merged your past and future selves?"
The old man laughed, "Don’t be surprised; in fact, the final realm of the Overlord’s eighteen levels of cultivation is known as returning to the origin! It involves gathering all past and future selves scattered between heaven and earth, merging them into one, achieving the Primordial form, and stepping into the peak of the Overlord."
Now Qin Shou understood why figures like the Eastern Emperor Taiyi were so formidable; one individual was actually a composite of many Overlords!
Still curious, Qin Shou asked, "What do they call you?"
The old man shook his head, "Me... I come from nothingness, everyone calls me..."
"Wu?" Qin Shou ventured.
The corner of the old man’s mouth twitched slightly as he clenched his fist subconsciously, then, resisting the urge to slap the Rabbit dead, he stated, "Wu!"
Qin Shou responded with a, "Oh... right, you’ve spoken at length, but only about the background, not the story yet."
Wu chuckled, "The story... I’ve forgotten what I should say. Let’s talk directly about the matter at hand."
Qin Shou: "..."
Wu continued, "Didn’t you just ask me if we’ve met before?"
Qin Shou quickly nodded, intensely curious about his own identity, or rather, about the identity of the Rabbit he was.
By now, Qin Shou had realized that his identity was definitely not simple, but exactly how it wasn’t simple, he truly did not know.
Wu said, "We indeed have met before. If it weren’t for you, hehe... the previous world wouldn’t have collapsed because of me."
Qin Shou exclaimed, "What?!" He then immediately exclaimed, "That’s not right, you can go to the past and future, so couldn’t you just go back and fix it?"
Wu explained, "The past and future of this world actually exist within the river of Huntun. In the river of Huntun, one can find the River of Time and traverse past or future. But the previous world I mentioned is not the past or future of this world. It’s the world that existed when it didn’t exist, before Pangu opened up the heavens!"
