Chapter 230: Chapter 225: The Second Daughter Born Illegally
"How’s it going? Have the scores come out yet?" Ye Mu, Zhong Meifen asked anxiously.
Ye Xia was also feeling extremely nervous. She felt that she hadn’t performed well in the college entrance examination, and when estimating her scores, she realized that she had answered several questions incorrectly. She couldn’t imagine how her family would react if she had truly failed.
Because so many people were checking their scores, the computer was still spinning. But the longer she waited, the less confidence Ye Xia had, especially when she saw that her mom had already begun to show a faint expression of pride, which only added to her worry.
But no matter what, the scores were eventually released.
"Chinese 122, Mathematics 120, English 135, Liberal Arts Comprehensive 240, total score 617." Zhong Meifen read out the scores, her frown deepening with each number, simply because these results were far from what she had expected.
According to her estimate, her daughter should at least score above 660 to have a chance at enrolling in one of the top universities in the country.
"Why is there such a big discrepancy from the usual monthly exam scores?" Zhong Meifen said dissatisfiedly, looking at her daughter with confusion.
Ye Xia’s face showed both embarrassment and awkwardness. How could it be just 617 points? Even if she had gotten a few multiple-choice questions wrong, the score shouldn’t have been this low! She blamed herself, wondering why she hadn’t been more careful during the exam. Ye Xia was now filled with regret, fearing that she might become the laughingstock among the envious girls in her class!
But the examination was over, and any regrets were too late. Ashamed, Ye Xia hung her head low, making up excuses in front of her mom as usual: "I don’t know, perhaps I was too nervous, or maybe the cold I had those two days affected my performance. It’s all my fault for not adjusting my mindset in time."
As a daughter who was always sensible and obedient, and who had always been her pride, seeing her so self-reproachful made Zhong Meifen feel more pity than anger: "Ah, never mind, it can’t be helped that a sudden illness affected your performance. 617 points isn’t bad either; choosing a better major can make all the difference."
"Mom, thank you." Ye Xia threw herself into Zhong Meifen’s arms, grateful. As long as her mom understood her, then dad wouldn’t say anything, and even the grandparents couldn’t interfere with her university matters.
After the scores were checked, it was time to select a major and fill out the college preference form. Ye Xia’s original goal had been those top-tier institutions in the capital, but her current scores ruled them out. Nonetheless, she still set her sights on the capital because it was home to the nation’s largest number of influential elites and wealthy individuals.
Ye Xia reviewed the admission scores for all universities in the capital, and fortunately, her score was a few points above the cutoff for National Media University. Moreover, the university’s programs would help her make connections with upper-class individuals. This was the only happy news for Ye Xia since the exam results were released.
When she officially received the acceptance letter from National Media University, Ye Xia momentarily forgot all her previous unhappiness. She was admitted to the Journalism program, and given her proficiency in piano and dance, along with her always-praised beauty, she was confident her future path would be smooth sailing.
In a moment of triumph, Ye Xia couldn’t help but think of her naturally talented yet uncared-for and self-destructive younger sister, Ye Qiu. What did it matter if she was slightly prettier? Their paths in life would only diverge further in the future.
What Ye Xia didn’t know was that, after half a year of effort, sixteen-year-old Ye Qiu already had assets exceeding the entire Ye Family’s. Moreover, in the latest monthly exam, she ranked second in her class and third in the entire school, just five points behind the top scorer and vying to be one of the strong contenders for the title of top scorer in the province in the following year’s college entrance exam.
When the latest monthly exam scores were released, the homeroom teacher Zhang Yinghua was the happiest. Out of the three key classes for science students in the senior grade, her class boasted half of the top ten students, and the first and third place were from her class. Apart from Study Committee leader He Danhua who firmly held the top spot, Ye Qiu was the one who delighted her the most.
In less than a year, Ye Qiu, who once dyed her hair blonde and lived as if in a dream, had risen from being ranked in the thousands to 175th, then later to the 50s, the 20s, and now the third in her grade.
Ye Qiu’s progress was like a myth. Although the school had seen students suddenly surge up the ranks, they were mostly boys, and none had improved as rapidly as she had.
Moreover, Zhang Yinghua had an inkling that Ye Qiu wouldn’t stop at this rank. She was a student with effective learning methods and high efficiency. Perhaps by the next monthly exam, her name would be at the top of the list.
Students in Class One who shared Zhang Yinghua’s views felt the pressure, and thus motivated by Ye Qiu, the study atmosphere and motivation in the class grew stronger. This was why, come exam time, Class One’s average score would always be higher than that of Classes Two and Three.
"Ye Qiu, where are you going for summer vacation?" Ren Meimei asked while packing her bag.
"First, I’ll visit the countryside; then I’ll come back here to study."
Ren Meimei gasped in astonishment as if looking at a monster, "You’re incredible." You work so hard already and not even taking a break during vacation!
It was He Danhua, the Study Committee leader from the bunk below, who took interest in Ye Qiu’s words, asking, "Ye Qiu, can we study together?" Even though she was first in the exam this time, He Danhua had a premonition that Ye Qiu would soon surpass her. If Ye Qiu was this dedicated, what excuse did she have to play?
"Sure, I’ll normally go to the city library to do practice problems. I’ll be there both mornings and afternoons. You can call me after I’m back, or you can find me directly there, or we can figure out another place."
"Let’s do the city library; we’ll meet there."
Ren Meimei looked left and right, sighing helplessly. Well, her math was good, but her liberal arts were lacking. Since the two of them were going, she might as well not go out and play for this summer. After all, there would be plenty of time to go out after getting into university. It was better to work hard when it was necessary!
"But, with Ye Zi going to the countryside, it’s going to be some time before we can eat such delicious fruit again."
"Alright, when I come back, I’ll bring more cherries from our hometown for you, enough to satisfy you."
Reassured by Ye Qiu’s promise, Ren Meimei’s face lit up with joy: "That’s better."
After vacation started, Ye Qiu first went to visit Uncle Liu and Granny Liu. After leaving them with a large quantity of Space Water fruits, she set off for Zhongjia Village.
If there was anyone in the world that Ye Qiu truly missed, it had to be her grandmother. Now that her grandmother had passed away, it was only natural for Ye Qiu to use her vacation time to pay respects to her, as well as to visit Uncle Zhong and Aunt Zhong.
