Chapter 70: Chapter 70, Bai Jin on the Run
Guang Chengzi revealed a smile and said, "Many thanks for the Master’s guidance. How could the matter of finding a mount for our revered Master be entrusted to the hands of outsiders? I shall depart from Kunlun Mountain to search for a suitable mount."
A diminutive figure leaped out from the ground, Ju Liusun laughed heartily and said, "Leave this kind of task to me! I am versed in the Earth Traveling Skill, capable of traversing both heaven and earth; I assure you I will find an appropriate mount for Master."
Ci Hang caught the stray hair by her ear and spoke softly, "The conflict of Witch Demons is rife with danger in the Primordial World, it’s better that I go!"
Chi Jingzi spoke earnestly, "How can we allow Junior Brother to undertake such perilous tasks? As Elder Brothers, it is our duty."
One by one, the Golden Immortals of the Chan Sect exchanged glances, a flash of embarrassment in their eyes. Having seen the benefits of currying favor with their Master through Bai Jin’s example, none wanted to forgo this opportunity now.
Ran Deng laughed and said, "It’s heartwarming that several of my disciples have such filial piety. The Master will certainly be pleased. However, there’s no need to search any longer. I am aware of a place where a Divine Beast resides, stable as an ox, alert as a deer, loyal as a horse, majestic as a dragon; it would be most fitting as a mount for the Master."
The disciples all showed expressions of surprise, a Divine Beast like this existed in the Primordial World?! They then showed expressions of regret.
...
Inside the Yuqing Palace, Bai Jin knelt on a cushion, paying respects: "Disciple pays homage to Master."
Primordial nodded expressionlessly and replied, "Rise."
Bai Jin stood up, seated himself on the cushion, and said, "Master, you have seemed somewhat unhappy recently? May I inquire what troubles you?"
Primordial looked into the distance and lamented, "The conflict between Primordial Witch Demons has thrown Heaven and Earth into chaos; it’s indeed worrying."
Bai Jin breathed a sigh of relief and casually remarked, "Master was concerned about the world; I feared that you were in a dispute with my own Master over the strife among the disciples!"
Primordial’s face twitched slightly, his displeasure apparent as he said, "These disputes among disciples are trifles! Your Master, with his indiscriminate acceptance of disciples and lack of proper teaching, allowed a zombie to launch a surprise attack on a fellow brother. This alone demonstrates his failure to instruct properly. At this rate, Tongtian’s legacy will eventually be ruined by his disciples. And to think, as his brother, I haven’t received a single word of explanation from him until now? How infuriating and vexing that is."
That last sentence is what’s really important, isn’t it?! Bai Jin thought silently and then nodded in agreement, saying, "What you’ve said is true, Master! I have always opposed my own Master’s reckless acceptance of disciples. He recently accepted a thousand more, and I immediately drove six hundred of them out. Being the eldest senior brother isn’t easy!"
Primordial’s countenance brightened slightly, and he nodded, "Indeed, you’ve worked hard. Jie Sect is fortunate to have you; otherwise, it would have been turned upside down by now."
Bai Jin quickly replied, "In truth, my Master has also done his best, but due to the short time since they were accepted, he simply didn’t manage to train them properly. After that incident, my Master has consistently felt remorseful. But as you know, Master, he’s a proud person, so it’s difficult for him to swallow his pride and come forward."
Primordial appeared startled and said with suspicion, "Is that so?"
Bai Jin patted his chest, assuring with conviction, "Of course it’s true! This trip is actually a special request from Master."
Primordial’s expression shifted and he asked, "What did he ask you to do?"
"Master feels extremely remorseful about the previous incident and plans to hold a banquet at Taiching Peak. Under the witness of Senior Master, he intends to apologize to you for his inadequate instruction leading to the fight between disciples of both sects, and to conduct a profound self-reflection."
Primordial revealed a smile and said, "Bai Jin, these aren’t Tongtian’s own words, are they?"
Bai Jin sported an awkward grin and said, "I might have done a bit of artistic embellishment, but the essence is correct. Indeed, it is a banquet organized by Master as an apology."
Primordial laughed heartily, "You slick little trickster! The matter is not entirely his fault; my disciples also have their shortcomings, so I will accept this banquet."
Bai Jin expressed gratitude, "Many thanks, Master! Then I shall return to give my report."
"Go on! Go on!" Primordial waved his hand with a chuckle.
Bai Jin rose, bowed respectfully, and then turned to walk outside, flying towards Upper Pure Peak.
Bai Jin stood before the Shangqing Palace and addressed in a bowing motion, "Disciple requests an audience with Master!"
The gates of the Tao Palace thundered open; after Bai Jin entered, they boomed shut behind him. The great hall was as bright as day, and Tongtian sat in his place of honor.
Bai Jin stepped forward, kneeled in front of the cushion, and bowed deeply, saying, "Disciple pays respects to Master, wishing Master’s Saint Dao prospers."
"Rise," Master said.
Having risen, Bai Jin sat cross-legged on the cushion and tentatively asked, "Master, are you still angry with Master Yuan Shi?"
"No!"
"Master, you haven’t gone out for several days."
"Your master has been seeking Enlightenment in the Tao!"
"Master, you have not yet met with the newly accepted junior brothers and sisters."
"Your master has been seeking Enlightenment in the Tao!"
"Master, it’s been a long time since you discussed the Tao with the two Senior Masters."
"Your master has been seeking Enlightenment in the Tao."
"Master..."
"Bai Jin, you are quite talkative today," Tongtian said in a faint voice.
"Just one more thing," said Bai Jin seriously, "Second Master invites you to have a meal."
Tongtian was taken aback and asked doubtfully, "He’s inviting me to dinner?"
Bai Jin nodded vigorously and said, "I have just returned from Yuqing Palace. Master Yuan Shi and I talked a lot, mainly about the conflict that happened a few days ago, and he showed deep remorse through our conversation."
"Him? Showing remorse? Bai Jin, if you’re going to lie, at least make it believable," Tongtian said disdainfully.
Bai Jin replied with an embarrassed smile, "Alright! I embellished it a bit. I really can’t lie; Master saw through me immediately."
Tongtian chuckled and asked, "What else did he say?"
"Master Yuan Shi is very dissatisfied with his own disciples misinterpreting his teachings and slandering Jie Sect disciples. He also felt a lot of regret towards you, Master, so he planned to host a banquet on Taiching Peak, with Senior Master Taishang as a witness, to formally apologize to you."
"You embellished that too, didn’t you?"
"Just a little, but the meaning is the same. You know as well, Master, that Master Yuan Shi is an exceptionally proud person, so he put it more tactfully, but that’s the gist of it."
Tongtian laughed heartily and said, "At least he has some self-awareness. What achievements can his arrogant disciples possibly have? Go and tell your Master Yuan Shi that I will accept his banquet."
Bai Jin promptly responded, "Yes!" and quickly stepped out.
...
Bai Jin hurried back into his own palace and called out, "Junior Sister Shi Ji, please come over!" His voice echoed down below.
A moment later, Shi Ji entered Bai Jin’s Tao Palace and asked, "Senior Brother, did you want to see me?"
Standing up from his chair, Bai Jin smiled and said, "Junior Sister, I need you to find some rare ingredients."
Shi Ji asked in confusion, "Rare ingredients?"
"Such as mountain treasures and strange fruits, or the flesh of immortal birds and divine beasts."
Shi Ji frowned slightly and said, "Mountain treasures and strange fruits are easier to find, but the flesh of immortal birds and divine beasts isn’t easy to come by; they are all very powerful and difficult to deal with."
Bai Jin immediately replied, "If it’s hard to find, then go buy them!"
Shi Ji, puzzled, said, "Buy?"
