Chapter 112: Chapter 112, When in Doubt, Ask the Big Shot
Bai Jin suddenly stopped in his tracks, a warm smile spreading across his face as he said, "Senior Brother, good morning!"
Duobao drifted down onto the island, expressing his surprise and doubt, "Junior Brother, when did you get back?"
"Last night!"
"Have you paid respects to Master yet?"
"Of course, I have."
Duobao frowned slightly and asked, "And Master just let you off like that?"
With a smug smile, Bai Jin said, "I am Master’s most beloved disciple; how could Master bear to punish me? Master even asked kindly whether I had eaten and drunk well and if I’d encountered any dangers outside."
Duobao’s mouth twitched twice, no punishment for that? He forced a smile and said, "It’s good that you weren’t punished, I’ve been worried about you."
"Thank you for your concern, Senior Brother."
The two walked side by side towards the interior of the Tao Palace.
Suddenly, Duobao asked, "Junior Brother, are you here to pay your respects?"
"Yes! Are you too, Senior Brother?"
With a nonchalant smile, Duobao said, "Master has summoned me, saying there are important matters to discuss!" He quickened his pace towards Golden Turtle Island.
Bai Jin paused for a moment, then quickly caught up with two long strides, curiously asking, "Senior Brother, what’s the important matter?"
"It’s naturally a major issue concerning the Jie Sect, since Master didn’t summon you, it’d be better not to ask," Duobao plainly advised.
Together, they arrived in front of Bi You Palace, exchanged glances, and both bowed deeply, saying, "Disciple pays respects to Master!"
"Come in!" The voice of Tongtian came from within Bi You Palace.
Duobao and Bai Jin rose simultaneously.
Bai Jin stepped forward to walk inside.
Duobao stretched out a hand to stop him and said, "Junior Brother, Master summoned me to discuss matters regarding the Jie Sect, you should perhaps wait a moment if there’s nothing urgent."
Bai Jin replied, "Master didn’t ask me to wait, and I also have important matters to report, issues concerning Heaven and Earth." He sidestepped Duobao and walked toward the interior of the hall.
Duobao withdrew his hand and followed inside as well.
After entering the Tao Palace, Bai Jin suddenly produced a beautifully crafted basket from his hands, orderly filled with various rare Immortal Fruits.
Duobao’s eyes bulged, he had even prepared this?
Kneeling on a cushion with the fruit basket in hand, Bai Jin affectionately said, "Master, the weather has been dry and fire-prone lately, these are Immortal Fruits grown by the disciple’s family, specially brought to moisten Master’s throat."
Tongtian chuckled, "Who finds it dry by the sea?" With a flick of his finger, the fruit basket Bai Jin was holding flew out and landed on a nearby table and chairs.
Cursing inwardly at such a sycophant, Duobao knelt on the cushion and respectfully bowed, with a dry voice he said, "Disciple pays respects to Master!"
"All rise!" Duobao and Bai Jin got up and seated themselves on cushions.
Tongtian looked at Duobao and said, "Today, I summoned you because of matters regarding the recruitment of disciples!"
Duobao instinctively glanced at Bai Jin and said, "Master, shouldn’t the task of recruiting disciples be handed over to Junior Brother Bai Jin? To avoid recruiting good and bad indiscriminately and angering Junior Brother, leading him to expel them all from the sect!"
Tongtian looked towards Bai Jin, what do you think?
Bai Jin immediately wore a troubled expression and said, "Master, please don’t come to me for this, my little heart hasn’t been well recently."
Tongtian coughed once and said, "Duobao, you will be in charge of this matter, go ahead and recruit ten thousand disciples for the time being."
Duobao respectfully responded, "Understood!"
Bai Jin’s eyes, filled with a multitude of emotions—grievance, reluctance, tears, and a resolve akin to facing death—stared directly at Tongtian.
Tongtian felt rather uncomfortable under the gaze and coughed, speaking irritably, "What now? Wasn’t the recruitment of disciples something we agreed upon?"
Duobao’s eyes suddenly widened, a twinge of pain seizing his heart. You agreed on this? When was this decided? You decided first and only then you’re telling me? Master, I’m your first disciple!
Bai Jin spoke sadly, "Master, too many!"
Tongtian said with earnest weight, "Bai Jin, we need ten thousand disciples."
"Master, we currently have eight hundred and thirty-five Outer Disciples. You mean to say, with another nine thousand one hundred and sixty-five recruits we would have enough."
"The more, the merrier. We need to have some reserves."
"Too many will cause chaos! Master, why don’t you manage these ten thousand disciples yourself?"
Tongtian replied with a chuckle, "Fine, then nine thousand one hundred and sixty-five it is. Duobao, go prepare."
"Yes!" Duobao rose, his heart heavy, and walked out. Since he entered, he hadn’t said much at all; Master had said he would discuss matters with him, but instead, Bai Jin stole the spotlight.
As Duobao left the Tao Palace, a sudden thought flashed through his mind – surely, Immortal Fruit can be planted on Duobao Island!
After Duobao left, Tongtian looked at Bai Jin and asked, "Why haven’t you left yet?"
Bai Jin rose and scurried up to the top, then plopped down on the steps and chuckled, "Master, actually, I came to have you interpret a dream."
"Interpreting dreams? You, a grand Taiyi Golden Immortal, need help with interpreting dreams?"
"I really do. Last night I dreamed of Nuwa."
Tongtian’s expression turned solemn in an instant, he waved his hand, and the doors of the Tao Palace slammed shut with a thunderous noise, the Tao shook and sealed the entire palace, barring the heavens and grounding the earth.
Tongtian spoke seriously, "What did she want with you?"
"Master, how do you know it was Nuwa who sought me out?"
"No creature from the Three Realms can dream of a Saint." He finished, giving Bai Jin a meaningful glance.
Bai Jin’s heart sank. Initially, they seemed to have claimed to have dreamt of the Master, and if that were really the case, wouldn’t that blow their cover? Although they had never underestimated the might of a Saint, it never occurred to them that one couldn’t even dream of one.
Bai Jin admitted honestly, "Nuwa asked me to go to the Witch Clan, to convey a message."
"What message?"
"That the flesh of the Human Clan can be used to refine Witch Artifacts, capable of annihilating the Primordial Spirit of the Demon Clan. At the same time, she had Fu Xi send a message to the Demon Clan, that the bloodline of the Human Clan can refine Divine Artifacts that slay members of the Witch Clan."
"Hehe~ Nuwa is finally starting to make her move."
Bai Jin exclaimed, "Master, you knew?"
"If even you can know, why wouldn’t I? I just didn’t expect Nuwa to have you do this."
Bai Jin asked gravely, "Master, in this way, the Human Clan will suffer a massacre at the hands of the Witch and Demon Clans, barely escaping extermination. Why would Nuwa do this?"
Tongtian said with a sigh, "She is playing a game, a great game that contends with Heaven and Earth."
Bai Jin’s heart thumped eagerly, "Contend for what?" While at Kunlun Mountain, Bai Jin had already speculated that Nuwa was pushing for the Human Clan to become the protagonists of Heaven and Earth, which was precisely why Bai Jin readily agreed in the dream, yet it had never been confirmed.
"To contend for the Human Clan’s position."
"How so?"
Tongtian glanced at Bai Jin, "Knowing too much isn’t good for you."
Bai Jin immediately looked dejected. They still hadn’t gotten the specifics; they were so close, yet why did Master suddenly become so shrewd?
