Chapter 145: The Terrifying Anomaly!
Chapter 145: The Terrifying Anomaly!
Kathryn’s thunderous voice, filled with anger, resounded through the air.
"How dare you attempt to assassinate me? Do you know who I am?"
As soon as she spoke, she waved her palm. Immediately, a loud bang echoed as the space around her shattered like fragile glass. In an instant, the five assassins surrounding her were crushed into dust.
Everyone was shocked.
Kranos glanced at Kathryn for a moment. She seemed different somehow, but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what had changed.
Kevin looked at his sister with a trace of fear. He had never seen this side of her before.
It’s that technique again. Desmond, who was watching from the shadows, was stunned. This was the same power she had used to kill him once before. Seeing how much more terrifying it had become, he felt a chill run down his spine.
Thankfully, I didn’t take the risk, he thought with a quiet sigh of relief.
Kathryn turned toward the demons who were still frozen in shock. She waved her palm once more. Another wave of spatial fluctuations surged, and in the next moment, the space around them collapsed, crushing every demon within.
Before the more than one hundred demons could react, they were reduced to dust.
After it was done, Kathryn frowned slightly. Her expression changed, and she turned her gaze toward a specific direction.
Sensing her focus, Desmond was stunned. He did not hesitate. In a flash, he activated a shadow movement technique, slipping between the shadows of the trees as he fled. He knew that in that moment, Kathryn had sensed his presence.
Is this the horrifying strength of an anomaly? He was filled with terror as he ran desperately.
Just as she was about to destroy him, another wave of demons arrived, even more terrifying than the last. She immediately waved her hand, causing space to collapse again. Then she turned toward Kranos and Kevin.
"Let’s leave this place."
Her voice echoed strangely, as though more than one person was speaking at once. It was almost like an illusion.
An anomaly, huh? Kranos muttered inwardly. Such power was truly terrifying. If being an anomaly is not necessarily a bad thing, and it grants this kind of strength, wouldn’t it be worth pursuing? The thought passed through his mind for a moment, but he quickly shook his head.
I need to understand more about anomalies before deciding anything.
Just as he was lost in thought, Kathryn appeared in front of him in an instant. She held him carefully and vanished again, taking him along.
Kevin followed behind silently.
Along the way, Kathryn killed every demon they came across. One after another fell before her as if they were nothing.
In just a short time, they had left the forest behind.
What appeared before them was a city.
A sturdy gate stood in the distance, with torches flickering across its stone walls. Without hesitation, Kathryn led them inside, passing the startled guards effortlessly with a subtle burst of pressure that kept them from interfering.
Soon after, they found a small house tucked away on a quiet street near the edge of the city. It had three rooms, just enough for the three of them to rest and plan their next steps.
After laying Kranos carefully onto the bed in one of the rooms, Kathryn’s expression shifted once more. Her pace quickened as she exited the room and entered her own.
Something was wrong.
Her body trembled faintly.
Once inside her room, she locked the door behind her and sealed it with a spatial rune. Then her knees gave out.
She collapsed to the floor, clutching her chest.
Blood trickled from the corners of her lips. A wave of green flame, radiant and divine, surfaced across her body. Its brilliance faded gradually, flickering and dimming like a dying lantern.
It’s getting worse, she thought, her vision beginning to blur. The more I use it, the closer I get to that state.
She leaned back against the wall, breathing heavily.
I need to stop using it. Unfortunately, everything is still too dangerous for that. Soon. After I make Kranos my puppet, we’ll head to that place where I can recover.
Outside, the city remained quiet.
...
A few weeks passed in a blur.
Kranos had mostly recovered from his injuries. The stabbing pain in his meridians had reduced drastically, and he could finally move without strain. But rest alone could not silence the unease growing inside him.
Kathryn had returned to her usual calm demeanor, but he had seen what lay beneath the surface. The power she wielded was not ordinary in any way.
To destroy space itself and crush Monarch realm and even God Incarnate realm beings like insects, there had to be more behind her abilities.
Kranos needed to understand what it meant to be an anomaly. His own life might depend on it. During the days he was injured, he had suppressed his curiosity. But now that his body was healed, he could finally explore the city and search for answers.
That night, he waited until midnight.
Kathryn remained in her room. The light beneath her door was faint. Kevin had not returned from his scouting, and the house was quiet, save for the occasional creak of old wood and distant footsteps echoing in the alley outside.
Kranos wrapped his black cloak tightly around himself and stepped out. Using his mental space, he suppressed his cultivation completely, diminishing his aura to the point that he appeared no different from an ordinary human.
The city of Virelen was quiet under the moonlight. Lanterns lined the main road, casting flickering shadows across stone walls and tiled roofs. Cultivators passed occasionally, some laughing, others whispering, but none gave him more than a passing glance.
He moved deeper into the heart of the city. He knew that information about anomalies would not be found in the outskirts. Only in the older, inner districts could he obtain such knowledge
After using spatial teleportation several times, he finally reached the middle sector of the city. There, he encountered a middle-aged man leaning against a pillar. After a brief moment of thought, Kranos stepped forward.
"Excuse me, do you know where I can find any kind of information in this city?"
The man was startled for a second, but then nodded and replied, "This district is called Hollow Stacks. There are rumors that some of the oldest texts in the city are buried here. If there’s anything you’re looking for, it would probably be found in those abandoned buildings just a few meters from here."
