Chapter 125: Chapter 125 - Strange one
The car roared down the dark road, tires screeching as Jai floored the gas pedal. But the zombie clinging to the hood refused to budge.
Its bloody mouth hung open, snapping at the glass right in front of Yunfeng’s face, leaving streaks of saliva and gore on the windshield. For a second, it almost looked like it was biting him.
Instead of panicking, Yunfeng leaned forward, tilting his head curiously. Then, he shifted slightly to the right. The zombie’s head twitched and followed.
He leaned to the left. The zombie moved too.
"Huh," Yunfeng muttered, eyes narrowing. "They can see very well..."
Jai gritted his teeth. "Now is not the time to be running experiments!"
Ignoring him, Yunfeng lifted a finger and slowly waved it in front of the glass. The zombie’s gaze followed hungrily, its gaping maw snapping at the air.
"What about their sense of smell?" he mused.
"Yunfeng," Jai said warningly.
Yunfeng dug into their stash and smeared some jam onto his fingers. Before Jai could react, he reached for the window controls.
"What do you think you’re doing, you ass! Put your hand back in!" Jai shouted, eyes darting between the road and his insane passenger.
But Yunfeng had already rolled down the window. The second his jam-covered fingers were exposed, the zombie screeched and lunged sideways, trying to get a bite—right before it lost its grip and tumbled off the car, hitting the pavement with a sickening thud.
Jai let out a shaky breath, hands clenched around the steering wheel.
Yunfeng calmly rolled the window back up and wiped his fingers clean with a tissue. "I guess I can’t test that with a zombie that can see... maybe a blind one would be better."
Jai turned to him with an intense glare. "Boy, you are really testing my patience."
The road twisted through the mountains, narrow and treacherous, and now, as night crept in, an eerie fog rolled over the path like a thick, suffocating blanket. The headlights barely cut through the mist, making it impossible to see more than a few feet ahead.
Jai slowed the car, gripping the steering wheel tightly. His knuckles turned white as his eyes darted between the faint outlines of trees and the endless void of fog in front of them.
"This is getting worse," he muttered.
Yunfeng, arms crossed, leaned against the window, squinting into the murky darkness. "Just drive slow. We don’t want to fall off the edge—"
Something shifted in the fog.
A massive shape loomed ahead, emerging from the mist like a ghost.
"LOOK OUT!" Yunfeng screamed, clutching the seatbelt with both hands.
Jai reacted instantly, slamming the brakes with all his strength. The tires screeched against the asphalt, the car lurching forward as they skidded. Their bodies jerked violently as they came to a sudden, heart-stopping halt.
The world seemed to freeze.
Right in front of them, barely inches away, was a massive van lying on its side, completely overturned. It stretched across the entire road, blocking their path.
Their ragged breaths filled the silence. Yunfeng let go of his seatbelt, hands trembling slightly. "Holy shit," he muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs.
Jai exhaled sharply, rubbing his face. "We almost died."
They sat there for a moment, staring at the wreck in front of them. The van’s metal frame was twisted, its shattered windows glinting in the dim light. Blood smeared the side, long streaks of it trailing toward the edge of the road.
Yunfeng narrowed his eyes. "Something happened here."
Jai gave him a wary glance. "Yeah, no shit. But the real question is... is someone still here?"
As if on cue, a faint noise echoed from the fog beyond the van. A wet, dragging sound.
Both of them tensed.
Jai’s fingers twitched over the gear shift, his instincts screaming at him to turn the car around, but there was no space. They were trapped between the overturned van and the steep cliffside. The only way forward was through the wreckage.
Then, they heard it—
A guttural growl.
A blur of movement erupted from the side of the van.
"SHIT!"
A massive figure lunged from the shadows, slamming against the hood of the car with terrifying speed. The impact rocked the vehicle, metal groaning under the force.
Yunfeng’s breath hitched. This wasn’t like the zombie they had shaken off earlier. This one was fast.
The thing stood tall—nearly seven feet—its swollen muscles stretched against torn, bloodstained clothes. Jagged flesh hung from its face, exposing teeth that were too large, too sharp. Its cloudy, rage-filled eyes locked onto them, and with an unnatural snarl, it slammed its fist onto the windshield.
CRACK!
The glass spiderwebbed instantly.
"GO! GO!" Yunfeng yelled.
Jai threw the car into reverse, but the zombie leaped again, this time onto the roof. The car lurched violently under its weight.
"Son of a—" Jai swerved hard, but the thing held on.
The sound of nails scraping against metal sent chills down their spines. Yunfeng unbuckled his seatbelt, twisting in his seat. "We need to get it off!"
The zombie suddenly slammed a fist straight through the sunroof, shattering it. Broken glass rained down inside the car.
Jai cursed. "IT’S GETTING IN!"
Yunfeng acted on instinct. He grabbed a half-empty gas can from the backseat and, without hesitation, threw it upward.
The container smashed into the zombie’s face, momentarily disorienting it. Taking his chance, Yunfeng yanked off his jacket, wrapped it around his arm, and punched the creature right in its mangled face.
It barely flinched.
"Fuck."
The zombie’s hands reached down, clawing at Yunfeng’s head. He barely ducked in time.
Jai gritted his teeth. "Hang on."
He slammed the brakes.
The sudden stop launched the zombie forward. It tumbled off the roof, hitting the ground with a sickening thud.
Yunfeng barely had a moment to breathe before the monster was already scrambling back to its feet.
"IT’S NOT DEAD!" he shouted.
Jai didn’t hesitate. He slammed the accelerator. The car sped forward, straight at the zombie.
But instead of mindlessly taking the hit—
It jumped.
With terrifying agility, the thing leaped over the car and landed behind them, crouched like a predator.
Jai and Yunfeng exchanged a look of horror.
"This is not normal," Jai muttered, his grip on the wheel tightening.
Yunfeng grabbed the map from the dashboard. "There’s a side road up ahead!"
"Say less."
Jai yanked the steering wheel to the left, tires screeching as the car veered onto the side path. The road was uneven, lined with thick trees, but at least it was away from that monster.
They drove in tense silence for a few minutes before Yunfeng finally exhaled, his shoulders slumping. "What the hell was that thing?"
Jai shook his head, still gripping the wheel tightly. "Something way worse than a regular zombie."
Yunfeng stared out the window, watching the darkened forest pass by. His fingers unconsciously clenched into fists. "I have a bad feeling about this."
