Chapter 123: Chapter 123 - Map
The car bumped over the rough road, making Yunfeng tighten his grip on the phone. The screen showed they had about seven hours to reach A City, but with all the detours, who knew how long it would really take?
He chewed on his lip, his mind racing. ’hana would be okay till then right..’ she might look like a brave irls but she would cry and whien at any small inconveniance. he was pretty sure his sister would stay safe inside until he comes for her. That was certain.
He gazed at the pohone isnetnly. Suddenly, a small memmory came to him.
His history tecaher said something about an emp attack.
Yunfeng;s face turned pale.
Jian noticed right away. "What’s wrong? Did someone call? Why do you look like that?" He shot Yunfeng a worried glance.
Yunfeng swallowed hard. "I just remembered... After the first virus outbreak, the next disaster is an EMP attack."
Jian frowned. "EMP?"
"Electromagnetic pulse," Yunfeng explained quickly. "It’ll knock out all electronics—GPS, phones, maybe even car batteries. We can’t depend on this anymore." He tapped the phone screen, his leg bouncing anxiously.
Jian let out a sharp breath. "And you just remembered this now?"
"I was a little busy trying not to die, okay?" Yunfeng snapped. Then he pointed back the way they came. "Turn around."
Jian blinked. "Huh?"
"The gas station! It might have a paper map. We need something that won’t stop working on us."
Jian sighed but turned the car around, driving back toward the abandoned gas station. As they neared, he slowed down and parked a little distance away. The place looked just as eerie as before.
"You sure we killed it?" Jian asked, his voice low.
But Yunfeng was already out of the car, hurrying toward the store without answering.
Jian cursed under his breath and followed.
The moment they stepped out of the car, Yunfeng’s eyes immediately locked onto the blood that had pooled and flowed down to the entrance of the gas station store.
The sight made his stomach twist, but he didn’t let it stop him. He walked in frowning at the smell.
Jai hesitated, grimacing at the sight of the crimson trail. "You’re just going to walk through that?" he asked, glancing down at his shoes in horror.
Yunfeng, already a few steps ahead, turned back to look at his friend with a raised eyebrow. "What? Why are you standing out there like that?"
Jai motioned at his shoes, still unable to move. "It’s my favorite pair."
With a deep sigh, Yunfeng reached out, grabbed Jai’s hand, and yanked him forward. "Just walk through it."
Jai grumbled but reluctantly followed, stepping in the blood with a reluctant look on his face.
The smell hit them almost immediately—a mix of decay and something far worse. Yet, neither of them hesitated as they walked further in, their footsteps echoing eerily through the silence.
It didn’t take long to find what they were looking for: a stack of maps pinned to the counter. Yunfeng wasted no time. He grabbed a few copies, shoving them into his bag. "Let’s go."
Jai, however, stayed put, his eyes scanning the store with a mischievous grin. He gestured toward the shelves. "Why don’t we..."
Yunfeng raised an eyebrow.
"...hmm hmm?" Jai finished with a grin that was impossible to ignore.
Yunfeng’s serious expression faltered for a moment as he fought back a smile. Slowly, his lips curled into a grin. "Fine. Let’s loot the place."
With a shopping cart in hand, they both went to work, cruising down the aisles and grabbing anything they could find—canned goods, snacks, anything that could keep them alive on the road. They didn’t bother being careful; they just shoved things into the cart.
But as Yunfeng watched Jai, who was grabbing every bag of chips and junk food on the shelf, a thought struck him. He frowned and cleared his throat. "Leave something behind."
Jai paused, glancing at him. After a moment’s hesitation, he nodded and put a few bags of chips back.
Yunfeng made sure to collect anything that could be of use, from canned vegetables to water. They both worked efficiently, filling the cart to the brim.
Once they had what they needed, Yunfeng rolled the cart outside, where the eerie quiet of the gas station settled over them again.
Yunfeng and Jai stood outside the gas station, their knowing grins still lingering as they gazed at the cart full of supplies. After quickly finding a few empty cans, they filled them up with gas from the pumps, the pungent smell of fuel mingling with the air. The back seat of the car was soon packed with the cans, food, and water they had scavenged.
Jai chuckled as he held his arm around Yunfeng’s shoulder, shaking him lightly. "We have water, food, and everything we need. We’re set!"
Yunfeng, however, only glanced at their load with a dull expression. He walked over to the back of the car and shut it, his thoughts far from the moment of satisfaction. "This should last us a few days, max," he said, his tone heavy. "But we have to rescue Hana and get back home."
Jai froze for a moment, watching Yunfeng walk toward the passenger seat. "Right," he muttered. After a brief pause, he slid into the driver’s seat, staring at the road ahead. His hands rested on the steering wheel, his fingers tapping nervously.
"Why did Hana go to City A?" Jai asked, his voice quiet but filled with curiosity.
Yunfeng shook his head, a look of confusion crossing his face. "No idea... Maybe she went there to meet her friends."
Jai frowned slightly, his brow furrowing in thought. He tapped the steering wheel again, lost in his own thoughts. "Hmm... That’s strange, though... Why would she leave in the middle of the night if that was the case?"
They both looked at each other questionably.
That question can only be answered by Hana.
