Chapter 941: Chapter 37: Finding People [Combined into one]

North Region, Sacred Mountain.

After the fall of Venerable Wanfa, this grand snowy mountain swiftly lost its halo. The foot of the snowy mountain no longer bore the dense footprints of pilgrims, and when the people of the North Region mentioned this place, they no longer did so with full reverence, but only with a few sighs.

Venerable Wanfa died fighting the Demon God, marking a brilliant finale to his lengthy life, worthy of the title of top cultivator among the Human Clan. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain due to the utterly unconscionable Senior Daoist Cang Sheng; the Demon God Origin still escaped. Now, the Human Clan could only coexist peacefully with the Demonic Clan.

The Demonic Clan’s occupation of the Penglai Ancestral Land was only a trivial retribution, hardly enough to counterbalance Cang Sheng’s immense sins.

After the death of Cang Sheng, the current Penglai Upper Sect had clearly separated itself from the past and embarked on a path of diligent cultivation, thus dissolving all past resentments like smoke in the wind.

Four Seas and Nine Continents still maintained peace, and that was enough.

However, there was no gloomy cloud over the summit of the Sacred Mountain; the monks still upheld their daily chanting and cultivation, prostrating at dawn and dusk, burning incense morning and evening, as if losing their master meant nothing different to them.

But today, something seemed off with Senior Brother Wu E, who led the daily practices. He had locked himself in the Zen room for a long time and still had not come out.

Even the usually indifferent Jiang Guo, looking at the tightly shut door, wondered, "What’s with the Great Monk? The old monk is already dead; could something have happened to him too? Should we break down the door?"

"Senior Sister, calm down," Chu Yi quickly held back the fiery-tempered girl and soothed her, "Senior Brother Wu E is always stable; perhaps he’s had some breakthrough in his cultivation. We shouldn’t disturb him."

Jiang Guo furrowed her brows, her concern stemming from the aura inside the room which felt slightly off to her. The aura was both unfamiliar and familiar; unfamiliar because she did not know what it was, yet familiar because she somehow felt she had encountered it before.

Suddenly, a scream came from inside: "Ah—"

The sound was harrowingly mournful, like a last cry before death.

It was Monk Wu E!

"Great Monk!" Jiang Guo, impatient, couldn’t wait any longer, and with a flying leap, kicked the door open with a loud bang!

Bang!

A powerful surge of Spiritual Power and mist burst forth from the door, causing even the mighty Jiang Guo to be pushed back dozens of steps, bouncing all the gathered monks of the Sacred Mountain away by the rebound.

Only Chu Yi was unaffected off in the distance—he was thrown off by Jiang Guo as she charged forward and was still hanging in a tree, having not come down yet.

"I have gained an insight in my meditation but failed to control my cultivation initially. I truly apologize," came the voice of Monk Wu E from within the mist, different than usual, tinged with a note of coldness and detachment.

"Brother..." someone called out softly.

"Don’t worry about me. Once I sort out what I have achieved, I will explain more," Monk Wu E dropped another remark and then with a flick of his sleeve, the door closed again amidst the mist.

Bang!

The door of the Zen room closed tightly, and the brilliant mist gradually faded, revealing the face of Monk Wu E.

He still had the same broad face, not shaven bald, bearing a blue fuzz of hair with plentiful bald spots. His cheeks bore the black and red complexion from the constant freezing sun of the Ice Domain, his skin rough.

But the light in his eyes was no longer gentle and compassionate, now mingled with threads of coldness and confusion.

"Who are you?" a voice from within the room posed a very simple yet soul-penetrating question.

Monk Wu E was surprisingly stumped by this question.

His gaze vacant, he looked at his own hands, pondering for a long while before responding, "Who am I?"

"Are you the Underworld King Sect Master, or Monk Wu E?" the voice asked again.

"Am I the Underworld King Sect Master... or Monk Wu E?" Monk Wu E repeated blankly, and after a long time, looked around incredulously, "Am I still alive?"

"You are all alive," the voice slowly said.

"Then..." Monk Wu E froze in place, "Who am I? The Underworld King Sect Master... or... Monk Wu E?"

He threw the question back again.

The voice suddenly shouted loudly, "You are Lin Poyun!"

That cry, as if carrying a thunderous force that could deter the soul, suddenly dispelled the confusion in Monk Wu E’s eyes, his bald head trembling, his eyes instantaneously clear.

"I am Lin Poyun!"

Though he simply repeated the words spoken by the voice, at that moment, he had finally clarified his own origin.

He was a youth from a mountain village, and at that time, Xuan Yinzi, seeking a blood sacrifice, had exterminated the inhabitants of this remote village. Only he, due to his unique root and destiny close to the underworld, was chosen by Xuan Yinzi, taken back to be trained as a puppet.

By chance, there was a woman in the Underworld King Sect who, perhaps because she was pregnant and wished to accumulate some good deeds, persuaded Xuan Yinzi not to kill the child, and to take him as a disciple, who might one day succeed him.

Xuan Yinzi found this acceptable and thus awakened the boy, pressing on his head and telling him that he was his master and also the enemy who killed all his kin. If he wanted revenge, then he should cultivate diligently.

However, Xuan Yinzi probably did not expect that this day would come so soon.

The boy was silent and cautious, discreetly reaching a level that posed a threat to his master without his master noticing. But that was not enough; Lin Poyun did something even Xuan Yinzi dared not do.
