Chapter 484: Chapter 62 - Breaking out of the cocoon [Seeking monthly votes!]_1

The accommodation conditions at the Regent Residence weren’t great, with a dust-ridden guest room in the small courtyard being the available option.

But it certainly beats being locked up in a prison.

By the time Chu Liang returned, it was deep into the night, and he was noticeably exhausted.

He always took great pride in utilizing everyone’s talent and extracting every bit of productivity, leaving no idle hands on Silver Sword Peak. He didn’t expect the same to hold true at the Regent Residence.

The Regent Leader had Chu Liang review and analyze the suspicious cases reported from various states, guessing at potential key points, and deciding on how to proceed.

Initially, he seemed to be nurturing Chu Liang, guiding his thought processes. However, when he saw how quickly Chu Liang picked up the routine, he started to slack off.

Now, Chu Liang was left to review and analyze everything first and then propose a solution, with the Regent Leader only responsible for approving it.

With this switch, the workload of the Regent Leader sharply dropped while Chu Liang’s stress sharply increased. These matters of the Nine States were often life-or-death issues; he couldn’t afford to be careless.

But the more careful he was, the happier the Regent Leader became.

In this fashion, Chu Liang worked as a free laborer for a whole day, being thoroughly exploited by the old man.

Even then, it wasn’t entirely without its merits. From this, Chu Liang realized just how many strange cases were occurring across the Four Seas and Nine Continents. Even in relatively peaceful times, numerous cases arose every day.

Only with the massive Regent Residence and City Warden Office forming the first line of defense, and the Nine Heavens and Ten Lands forming the second, was peace maintained.

The desire of the Evil Demons to destroy was still very much alive.

According to the Regent Leader, it hadn’t been this bad before. Ever since the news of the Demon God’s return began to circulate, the demons and villains across the Nine States Land have been reactivated. The Yu Dynasty was suddenly thrust into chaos of an unprecedented scale, leaving the Regent Residence overwhelmed.

Chu Liang then realized that the message from the Demonic Clan’s Divine Envoy wasn’t as meaningless as it seemed.

At least now, even before the Demon God’s return, the Yu Dynasty was already falling into disarray.

Just as he was having these thoughts, a strange sensation resonated from within the White Pagoda.

He sent his Divine Sense into it to investigate.

He saw that the Golden Cocoon that the Golden Butterfly Baby had sealed had cracks forming, with some golden light leaking out. The cocoon was shaking incessantly as if something was trying to break free.

This cocoon breaking seemed different than before, more complex perhaps?

While Chu Liang pondered, he heard a crunching sound followed by a small hole appearing on the outside of the cocoon.

As expected.

Using teeth was clearly more efficient.

Soon after, a tiny head peeked out through the hole in the cocoon. It had two bright black eyes which met Chu Liang’s gaze.

Chu Liang blinked.

And she blinked back.

’Hmm?’ Chu Liang frowned slightly.

According to the ancient texts Jiang Yuebai had found, the evolution of the Heaven Devouring Beast had several stages; fly larvae, silkworm, butterfly, snake, dragon... finally, reaching the Ninth Realm to evolve into a formidable Nine-Headed Insect Demon, the form of the ancient Demon God.

Yet now, the head peeking out looked more like that of a chubby little girl, resembling a toddler. Her skin was smooth, white and tender, equally matched in texture and size to a freshly peeled boiled egg.

After an exchange of gaze, the little one suddenly beamed and squealed, "Aba... Aba..."

She could barely talk yet, her eyes radiating a newborn’s innocence.

But...

What was going on here?

As Chu Liang was bemused, the little girl twisted her round neck and pushed out her plump arms, trying to push open the golden cocoon.

Only then did Chu Liang realize why breaking the cocoon was proving difficult.

In her previous forms, she simply bit through the cocoon. But now, in her tiny human form, she didn’t quite know how to use her hands and her movements were incredibly clumsy.

"Hmm..." After pushing for a while, the little one seemed frustrated, her plump face all scrunched up, and then she let out a babyish cry: "Ah——"

The crunching sounds started again.

In no time, the petite one had consumed half of the golden cocoon and then, satisfied, crawled out, giving Chu Liang a full view of her.

The originally brilliant golden butterfly wings didn’t disappear - they simply became whiter, more transparent. The main body had transformed into a tiny little girl the size of a palm. Her skin was porcelain white, her little face chubby, and she was dressed in something like a gossamer skirt woven from golden threads.

If you just looked at the body, it definitely resembled an exquisitely carved little doll.

"Ah ba, ah ba..." After she struggled free, she clumsily spread out her arms and began toddling towards Chu Liang, seemingly wanting to hug him.

However, just as she began to walk, she immediately fell to the ground.

"Ouch..." Even after the little girl fell, she didn’t cry or fuss. She simply began crawling towards Chu Liang using all four limbs.

Chu Liang gently picked her up and placed her in his palm. The little girl immediately broke out into a happy smile, giggling nonstop.

Seeing her behavior, Chu Liang couldn’t help but recall something. Apparently, the first thing an animal saw after hatching would be identified as its mother.

As she had always seen his face first after her transformations, could it be she thinks he is her "male" mother?

Witnessing her joy and adorable antics as she danced about in his palm, Chu Liang could not help but feel puzzled. This wasn’t how the old records described it.

Could the Heaven Devouring Beast’s version of evolution possess some mimicry abilities? In other words, it evolves into the creature it spends the most time with?

If it could transform into a human, would it be able to be educated like one, thus becoming a true member of the Human Clan?

A number of wild thoughts flashed through his mind, but he couldn’t draw any conclusive answer based on the current situation. For the time being, Chu Liang decided to give her a name.

"Since you’re such a glutton..." he paused for a second, then said, "Let’s call you Tuntun."

...

In Butterfly Fairy Valley.

Moonlight descended upon the valley, filling it with serenity.

Pretty much all the beasts and oddities that could survive in the Mountain of Ten Thousand Poisons were more or less poisonous, with beings farther deeper being more dangerous. Completely non-poisonous beings probably couldn’t survive in here even for a single day.

But there was one exception - the butterflies of the Butterfly Fairy Valley.

They weren’t poisonous, yet they had managed to survive in the Mountain of Ten Thousand Poisons for a long time.

The butterflies in Butterfly Fairy Valley are non-poisonous, the reason they could live here are various types of poisonous plants that grew here. The butterflies helped in the pollination of these plants, which had bred in them a resistance to poison, allowing them to survive for long here.

Therefore, compared to other fierce and bloodthirsty creatures, the Butterfly Fairy Valley was quite a peaceful place.

When Jiang Yuebai arrived, it immediately caused a small commotion.

Some butterflies, sensing an intruder, began to take flight. Spiritual plants became alert and began to sway without wind.

Jiang Yuebai quickly released her own aura.

As an Immortal Spirit Body, she held extraordinary affinity. Greedy demon beasts would see her vital energy as Spiritual Medicine, while gentle spirit beasts would become fond of her.

Such was the wonder of possessing an Immortal Spirit Body.

As her aura spread out, the spiritual energy around her started to become incredibly active. Trees and Spirit Plants felt nourished and began to bloom, and also white butterflies rose in great numbers, fluttering around her.

Dressed as white as the moonlight, with butterflies flying like snowflakes, the scene was like a Mortal Fairyland, making her the only fairy there.

As she slowly walked toward the center of Butterfly Fairy Valley, to a big old vine tree, a beautiful woman also dressed in a white gossamer skirt fluttered down. A few large white wings on her back indicated her identity.

"Are you the leader here?" Jiang Yuebai asked.

"I am the most powerful butterfly demon here in Butterfly Fairy Valley." The woman looked at Jiang Yuebai, her gaze gentle. "Beautiful cultivator, is there anything I can assist you with?"

"I am seeking a butterfly." Jiang Yuebai replied. "It already possesses some spirituality and can communicate using human language. I suppose such butterflies are quite rare here."

As she spoke, she took out a painting.

The drawing was made based on Chu Liang’s memories. It was identical to the one he had seen previously.

But the butterfly demon only glanced at the drawing in Jiang Yuebai’s hand and immediately shook her head. "Beautiful cultivator, this is not a butterfly from our valley."

"Hmm?" Jiang Yuebai furrowed her brows slightly.

"All the butterflies in Butterfly Fairy Valley are white. If they are unable to detoxify themselves, black spots appear on their wings, which we use as a cue to provide treatment. The butterfly you are seeking..."

She took another glance, then said, "It would appear to originate from the Eastern Sea."
