Chapter 377: Chapter 61: Are You All Not Going to Tell Him? 【Seeking Monthly Tickets!】_1
The Demon Sect truly doesn’t care about its disciples.
This seems to be related to the founding principle of the sect. The upright disciples in Nine Heavens and Ten Lands feel a sense of belonging to their sects, and the sects in turn provide them support and protection.
But this doesn’t happen within the Demon Sect, where sects and disciples are brought together because of interests. The sect will use the disciples unscrupulously, not cherishing their lives. Similarly, disciples have no feelings for the sect and won’t hesitate to betray it if their interests are not served.
Therefore, there is a high turnover rate of disciples amongst the various factions within the Demon Sect. Even within the Underworld King Sect, it’s not uncommon for disciples to switch allegiance from one power faction to another.
Talk about fraternity?
Everyone would find that funny.
Yet, the Demon Sect will always have disciples.
If one could become a disciple of Nine Heavens and Ten Lands, nobody would join the Demon Sect. It’s because many people lack the talent compared to those geniuses - in the competition for resources, they can only look up to those chosen ones, being ants crawling in the dirt for their lifetime.
Therefore, some people would choose to tread the path of heresy, harming others’ interests to compete with the true geniuses. That’s the reason the Demon Sect exists.
As long as there is competition in the world, there will always be those who lack talent and harbor malice, ensuring the continuation of the Demon Sect.
It is precisely this way of survival over countless years that has led to estrangement between sects and disciples, allowing Chu Liang and the others to carry out their undercover operation smoothly.
After leaving Shu Mountain, the group scattered and headed for the meeting point on the outskirts of the Zhennan Region’s Mountain to rendezvous with Gui Lian’er.
Soon, the assembly of White Bone Hall and Ghost Face Hall was completed.
Gui Lian’er, dressed in a set of dark, gleaming black armor, was formidable. It was treasure armor worn by the personal guards of White Bone Hall, possessing an intense power.
"Has everyone arrived?" he coldly surveyed the crowd.
"We’re missing one, they probably ran into some accidents. We don’t need to wait for them." Chu Liang answered.
Leading the group, he stood at the forefront, flanked by the Ghost Face Hall’s elite. The pure-blooded demon sect disciple known as Little Four, stood tall and proud behind him, his eyes shining brightly. It looked like he was eager to perform well in the mission, to leave a good impression on his superiors.
"Good." Gui Lian’er nodded his head, "Let me then clarify the mission details."
"This time, we have to pursue and assassinate a city official of Southern Region’s Kaoshan city. There will be the Imperial Court’s guards escorting him to the capital. Our job is to intercept them midway. Under no circumstances, can we let him reach Yu Capital City alive." he said slowly. "Understood?"
"Understood!" the group responded.
Monk Pu Shan soon questioned, "But Hall Master, why are we going to kill that court official? After all, this matter is of great importance. If we are not after something significant, why provoke the Imperial Court? If there is something important, why do we only need to kill?"
Gui Lian’er briefly glanced at him, answering decisively: "You don’t need to know."
"Also..." Monk Pu Shan seemed like he wanted to say more.
"Shut up!" Gui Lian’er snapped.
"But..." Monk Pu Shan tried to interject again.
"Say one more word and I’ll rip your tongue out." Gui Lian’er threatened menacingly again.
"Uhm, uhm, uhm." Monk Pu Shan shook his head repeatedly in fear.
Gui Lian’er then took to the air, with the rest following silently behind him.
Monk Pu Shan tugged at Chu Liang’s sleeve and transmitted a message: "Are you guys not going to tell him that he has a hole in the back of his pants?"
Chu Liang mused for a moment, then replied: "Since he doesn’t like to hear, we should best remain silent."
Monk Pu Shan looked back at the crowd who maintained their silence, simply watching the spectacle and thought to himself, us Buddhist disciples are just too kind-hearted.
...
"Kaoshan city official, Wei Xi?"
"I am indeed the man."
In front of Kaoshan’s city office, there stood a White Feathered Golden Luan Bird two yards high and five yards long. Its shiny body and sharp elongated feathers on the main street were domineering and arrogant.
Pedestrians could only look up at it and take a detour.
The Yu Dynasty other than the few approved and tamed demon beasts, does not allow large beasts to enter the city at all. Even if they were reported, they were only allowed to walk into the city and they couldn’t soar high. Otherwise, the City Warden Office could shoot them down anytime.
However, Three Golds and Five Flags are exceptions.
Among them, Three Golds refer to three kinds of spirit beasts; the Five-clawed Gold Dragon, Golden Winged Heavenly Horse, and the White Feathered Golden Luan Bird.
The Five-clawed Gold Dragon need not be mentioned; it’s the National Guardian Dragon, a symbol of the fate of a country, only ridden by the Emperor during extremely formal outings, possibly only once in a century out of the Yu Capital City.
The Golden Winged Heavenly Horse is ridden by the members of the Imperial Family or high-ranking officials on imperial orders. People and officials from everywhere bow down in reverence wherever it passes.
As for the White Feathered Golden Luan Bird, it is ridden by messengers dispatched by the court, and likewise, they’re performing tasks for the Emperor.
The Three Golds represent the power of the Emperor.
The Five Flags refer to the army flags displayed during emergency marching by the five military regions. All cities they pass through must provide support.
And today in Kaoshan City, the one that had stopped was a White Feathered Golden Luan Bird! One of the Three Golds from Imperial City, representing the messenger sent by the Emperor!
Many people might not get the chance to see one in their lifetime.
Under the Golden Luan, there was a group of knife-carrying guards dressed in brocade red. They were the Heavenly Hunt Guards, one of the seven guards under the Night Dragon Palace.
Leading the team was a stern and robust middle-aged man who stared straight at the local official in front of him, his aura overwhelming, "I am Flag Officer Zhou Gu’an of the Heavenly Hunt Guard, ordered by the Emperor to escort you to Yu Capital City."
As he spoke, he raised a Heavenly Hunt Guard token.
"I obey!" The official in the cyan-green robe responded hastily, performing a ritual bow. His face seemed to bear the marks of hardship, revealing his advanced age and a habitual humble smile, "I appreciate your help, Sirs."
Though according to rank his own position was somewhat higher than that of the Flag Officer of the Heavenly Hunt Guard, these were the Night Dragon Palace Guards, the Emperor’s personal guards!
Capital officials already outranked local officers, and the Emperor’s own bodyguards outranked ordinary capital officials.
In the world of officialdom, being outranked by two degrees was like being outclassed by two generations.
Since these individuals were also tasked with transmitting the imperial edict and escorting him to the capital, how could he not show deference?
Wei Xi was nearly sixty years old, a minor official in Kaoshan City with a low rank. He had practiced cultivation in his youth, but his cultivation had only reached the First Realm, no more than a method of strengthening his body and health.
He thought he would spend the rest of his life in this small town of Kaoshan, never expecting to encounter such a fortuitous event.
A potential once-in-lifetime opportunity!
With a heart full of excitement, Zhou Gu’an and Wei Xi ascended onto the back of the Golden Luan. The White Feathered Golden Luan Bird never stooped down to its passenger – one either flew up oneself or was carried up.
Whoosh——
The White Feathered Golden Luan Bird quickly flapped its mighty wings and soared into the air, leaving the people of Kaoshan City in awe as they looked skyward.
As the Golden Luan flew out of Kaoshan’s region, Wei Xi laughed and asked, "Please forgive me for my ignorant question, but in all these years, I have never been to Yu Capital City. How long will it take us to get there?"
"We will be there shortly," Zhou Gu’an replied without turning his head.
"Huh?" Wei Xi was taken aback.
Although he had never been to Yu Capital City, he knew that it was located far to the north, while Kaoshan was in the south–the journey back and forth would not be short.
How could they possibly arrive soon?
Was this White Feathered Golden Luan that powerful?
Just as he was wondering, all the Heavenly Hunt Guards around him turned to look at him. Before he could understand why, a shout came from the distance.
"Wei Xi!"
A gentle voice called him, and Wei Xi’s brain felt like it was being fiercely knocked. Immediately he responded loudly, "I am!"
But after answering, he was puzzled himself – why was he responding to this inexplicable call?
Shortly after, a young man dressed in scholar’s robes appeared on the back of the White Feathered Golden Luan, standing tall and upright, with a kind face and warm eyes.
"Zhang Chen, a disciple of Ascending Dragon Academy, greets you all," the newcomer said with a gentle smile.
"Zhang Chen?" Flag Officer Zhou Gu’an stiffened and got up promptly, his hand touching the hilt of his sword, "Do you realize that boarding the Golden Luan uninvited is a capital crime?"
"Oh?" Zhang Chen looked at him and replied softly, "Isn’t impersonating the Emperor’s personal guard also a capital crime?"
"What did you say?!"
The clanging sound of unsheathed swords echoed all at once!
The sudden escalation frightened Wei Xi, and he slumped to the ground. What was happening seemed to be beyond his comprehension - were these so-called Heavenly Hunt Guards fake?
Were they plotting to kill him?
Surrounded by a group of unsheathed Heavenly Hunt Guards, his sense of security evaporated and was replaced with a sense of impending crisis.
However, Zhang Chen appeared perfectly composed. He chanted a mantra, stating: "Loitering on the Golden Luan is forbidden."
Hum——
As soon as his sentence fell, all the Heavenly Hunt Guards shuddered as if they’d been hit hard, their bodies involuntarily flipping backward, fearlessly jumping off the Golden Luan!
Only Flag Officer Zhou Gu’an resisted briefly, but he, too, jumped off without delay!
As soon as these so-called Heavenly Hunt Guards left the back of the White Feathered Golden Luan, their bodies regained normality, and they tried immediately to fly back to attack.
Zhang Chen, however, stepped in and grabbed Wei Xi, who had fallen into a stupor, lifting him up to fly away!
Meanwhile, a page of scripture unfurled in front of him, bursting forth dazzling light in the air and seeming to open a portal to a distant place!
Just as Zhang Chen was about to whisk Wei Xi away, a demonic, black arrow shot out of nowhere!
Swoosh——
The arrow streaked through the air with meteoric speed like a dark star, shattering Zhang Chen’s Teleportation Scroll and aiming directly for him!
Zhang Chen, encumbered with Wei Xi, found it difficult to dodge. Thanks to his quick reaction, he raised twelve delicately carved Jade Talismans with a wave of his hand. The Jade Talismans encircled them, blocking the powerful arrow.
Boom——
With a loud noise echoing in the sky, both Zhang Chen and Wei Xi fell down!
Below them was a valley shrouded in a dense mist!
