Chapter 142: Chapter 40: There’s a Spy Among Us 【New Book Seeks Monthly Votes!】_1
Misty Mountain Valley.
The wild high mountain valley entrance, a dense fog as substantial as physical matter, almost seemed to be flowing out, as if a bottle filled with mutton fat was being poured out here. The lush forest and lofty peaks on either side concealed an intense yin aura.
This place was also considered one of the more well-known dangerous areas among the Zhennan Region’s Mountains. Cultivators who often mucked about nearby knew of this place, but no one knew what lay at the end of the valley.
Lead by the Southern and Southwestern Guide Envoys of the Underworld King Sect, two groups of black-clad figures silently arrived at the mouth of the valley. Each person’s waist held a dark gold token marked with a number to identify their status. Perhaps due to the overwhelming Sha energy, the atmosphere of the whole troop was grim and stern.
However, at the very back of the right group, the figure at the end of the line occasionally trembled. The slight movement appeared somewhat eerie. Luckily, the trembling was hardly noticeable due to its small magnitude and the concealment of the robe, thus it didn’t draw the attention of the others.
That’s enough.
Shaking like this is annoying.
Chu Liang was continuously using Divine Sense to suppress the righteous impulse of Beheading Red Famous Sword, which was quite exhausting. From the outside, it looked like a slight shaking, but inside the White Pagoda, the Beheading Red Famous Sword was almost in uproar. Though he understood its urgent desire to slay demons and eliminate evils, he must also consider his own strength.
The increase provided by Beheading Red Famous Sword was based on his own cultivation. Killing Master Lu, who was at the Sixth Realm, last time was already quite a feat against the heavens. Chu Liang could clearly feel that with his current cultivation level, he had almost reached the limit.
Only with the right timing and conditions could he behead an alternative Sixth Realm cultivator.
When it came to the Underworld King Sect, a monstrous Demonic Path, Chu Liang believed that he might not even be successful in killing a prepared Fifth Realm cultivator, let alone the Soul Envoy of the Sixth Realm here... two of them, in fact.
You want me to stand up for justice at this moment; you’re probably trying to get me killed.
"One can never reach the Dream Abyss by flying over it. Only passing through the Misty Mountain Valley can lead to it," the South Route Guide raised his hand to signal the team to pause briefly before explaining, "The Misty Mountain Valley is full of miasma, poison fog, Reaper Ghosts, and souls. Everyone must be extra careful after we enter."
With that, he took out a long, ghastly white bone and waved it, instantly igniting a wave of dim, greenish-blue flame.
"Only by burning the bone of a Reaper Ghost with the ghostly flame can the mist and the souls in the fog be dispelled. Later on, everyone must stay close to the ghostly flame up ahead. Do not rush forward or fall behind," he continued to say, "If one falls behind, they may be carried away by the souls in the fog, never to leave this place."
"Yes!" All of the subordinates responded in unison.
They began to vaguely understand why the Guide, with his cultivation level, also needed to gather people before daring to cross the Misty Mountain Valley.
So there’s a risk of being possessed by souls if one is left alone?
After his brief instructions, the South Route Guide took the initiative to step into the dense fog. The white bone torch he held in his hand made a strange hissing sound the moment it came into contact with the mist, followed by low screams.
Chu Liang was amazed. What exactly was this Reaper Ghost that was so extraordinary? Even a single bone had intelligence and could scream?
The next second he discovered that the screams didn’t come from the bone, but from the fog!
This fog is alive?!
At this thought, Chu Liang immediately held his breath, daring not to inhale any of the fog.
But seeing the people in front step into the fog one after another, disappearing as they entered, seemingly without experiencing any trouble, he had no choice but to steel himself and step in as well.
Whew——
The moment his whole body entered the fog, it felt like he was stepping into an ocean. Immediately, a dull rumbling sound, like wind and thunder, rang in his ears, along with screams and moans. It seemed as though many people were calling from there, "Come... come..."
The ghostly voice was full of temptation. If it were a Cultivator who hadn’t reached Divine Consciousness Realm, they would likely be wooed over due to their weak mental strength.
This is too eerie.
Even stranger was that the surroundings were white as far as the eye could see, making it impossible to discern anything beyond three feet. Even with his Divine Sense fully opened, it was of no use. This dense fog seemed to block everything!
After a moment of bewilderment, he finally saw a flickering green flame in the distance. As the South Route Guide had said, only by burning a "Reaper Ghost" bone with ghostly flame can the dense fog be dispersed.
Fearing to be left behind, Chu Liang hurriedly caught up.
The troop continued to struggle forward in the dense fog. Despite their efforts, they didn’t get very far when suddenly, a black shadow flashed by behind them.
Chu Liang’s pupils tightened as he instantly turned around to be on guard.
"It’s the Reaper Ghost." Luo Yao used sound transmission to deliver her soft voice, "You’re not suited to take action. I’ll be the last one."
With that, she shoved Chu Liang’s back, asking him to keep up with the people ahead, while she herself became the rear-most of the group.
The reason Chu Liang was not suited to take action was that both he and Pu Shan didn’t have divine skills that were sufficiently similar to the Underworld King Sect’s, and might expose their identity if they took action.
But Luo Yao’s Ghost Control Technique was similar to the Soul Evicting Technique of the Underworld King Sect. In this foggy environment where vision was poor, it might be enough to pull the wool over their eyes.
Chu Liang was quite moved by this act. He moved up a rank and then heard the endless whispers of Pu Shan from ahead.
"Huh? Warrior Chu, you’re here." Pu Shan, seeing the person behind him had changed, looked back and used sound transmission to chat privately, "You arrived just in time. I was just explaining the origins of the Reaper Ghost to Miss Luo. The Buddhist scriptures once recorded the Reaper Ghost as a ghostly creature that fled to Yangjian after being tortured with bone removal in hell, and can regenerate its body using its undecayed bones..."
Chu Liang sighed quietly to himself.
He now had reason to suspect that Luo Yao’s decision to move to the back was partly out of concern for him, but another part... was probably because she didn’t want to keep whispering with Pu Shan.
Listening to his incessant chatter, Chu Liang suddenly had a peculiar thought. If one were to let Lin Bei and Pu Shan engage in a conversation, which of the two chatterboxes would tire first?
As he was mulling over this, he suddenly heard a deep roar from behind. The sound was largely hindered by the thick fog, and if they weren’t so close, they wouldn’t have noticed it.
"Aaaargh——"
Behind Luo Yao’s silhouette, there suddenly rose a towering shadow!
The shadow resembled a human form, yet it also looked like a mantis with two enormous blades. Upon closer inspection, the shadow turned out to be a body completely comprised of white bones!
The lower part of this figure was indistinguishable from a skeleton, only much larger. The two bony arms it held aloft were as huge as a person, with massive bone blades attached. Encasing the body of bones seemed to be a gloomy soul shadow.
A Reaper Ghost?
Yet another ghost with a solid form.
The ghost-like creature Chu Liang most preferred was the Human-faced Mandrill, which was a ghost possessing a physical form, an extremely rare phenomenon. The bone body of the Reaper Ghost in front of them seem to fall into the same category.
Luo Yao was quick to react. She initiated a spell the moment the reaper ghost appeared, and a black ghostly hand emerged from behind her. The hand grabbed the ghost’s skeletal body and launched a sudden attack.
Clank——
With a crisp sound, the Reaper Ghost was obliterated by this strike!
Chu Liang’s brows twitched. He could tell that the Reaper Ghost’s cultivation was about the same level as a cultivator in the Third Realm. It must have excelled in speed, attacking power, and the sturdiness of its body.
However, none of these advantages manifested before Luo Yao. She killed it off effortlessly.
This proved Luo Yao was strong, but did not necessarily imply that the Reaper Ghost was weak. If it were him dealing with it, it would have definitely taken some effort.
"Hmm?" The Guide Envoy up in front suddenly halted, causing the entire team to stop with him.
Though the previous battle was fast, it still caught the attention of the Guide Envoy. He turned his head to the end of the line.
The minds of Chu Liang and his two companions tightened; they didn’t know if he discovered something unusual.
The Guide Envoy then turned back around, carrying the white bone torch to the end of the line. He looked at the pile of leftover bones of the Reaper Ghost on the ground.
"Very good." He complimented Luo Yao.
He then commanded, "Gather these Reaper Ghost bones. We will use them to make our journey. If the torches are about to extinguish, the Earth Slaying Envoys led by the Southern Guide should take turns to hunt Reaper Ghosts."
On the journey thus far, everyone had understood that these bones of the Reaper Ghosts were essential fuel in the misty mountains.
Hunting Reaper Ghosts in the mist was dangerous. His command to send his own subordinates first, showed his sincerity towards the southwest guide.
Pu Shan grumbled at this. "If you want to show your sincerity, you should go yourself. Why should your subordinates be the ones to risk themselves?"
Chu Liang sent a message to Pu Shan, "It’s good for us to work away from the team. It makes it easier to act."
"I know. I was just cursing him out." Pu Shan nodded.
"..." He decided to ignore Pu Shan’s comment.
After walking for about an hour, the Southern Guide Envoy waved his hand again and brought the team to a halt.
He ordered everyone to form a circle within the illumination of the white bone torches, and then said, "The Earth Slaying Envoys of the south, each of you, with your subordinates, go hunt Reaper Ghosts, take two of the leftover bones each. After the first bone is burned, regardless of any gains, you must return."
At present, there were not many Reaper Ghost bones left—only a few that he had in his possession, and two that had launched an attack on the majority of the team just now. They didn’t know how long they would have to walk in the Misty Mountain Valley. Waiting for the white bone torch to burn out before starting to hunt was not an option.
"Understood!"
The three Earth Slaying Envoys from the south, each leading their subordinates, set off in different directions. Chu Liang’s group, of course, was among them.
With torch in hand, the Earth Slaying Envoy led the way with Chu Liang and his party following behind, calculating the distance from the main group and the best time to make their move.
This Envoy was their first targeted kill since they had entered the valley. The timing and circumstance were perfect for them to act.
Just as the three of them were silently waiting for the right moment, the envoy leading the way suddenly halted, his silhouette dark and foreboding.
"What’s going on?" Pu Shan asked.
Given the time constraint, and the urgency to find the Reaper Ghosts, his sudden stop appeared peculiar.
The Envoy turned around, his gaze beneath the black robe seemed to survey the three of them coldly. He then said ominously, "There’s a traitor among us."
What?!
Upon hearing this, Chu Liang was taken aback.
