Chapter 766: Secrets not Easily Imparted

When this girl used to cook for grandpa, she was never so enthusiastic!

Indeed, a grown girl can’t be kept at home!

Watching his granddaughter flit out the door light as a swallow, humming a tune, Elder An couldn’t help but reveal a hint of a wistful look, and he sighed inwardly.

However, thinking of his granddaughter’s affection not for another but for Xiao Yi, his heart calmed down somewhat. Otherwise, he would have been angry enough to slam the table directly.

He was very fond of Xiao Yi. In his eyes, this young man was an exceptional choice in every aspect and completely satisfactory.

He had intended to bring them together personally at first, but later on, for some unknown reason, a matter that seemed quite favorable developed in an inexplicably odd direction. His own granddaughter, as if bewitched, had yet to meet Xiao Yi but adamantly presumed him to be a swindler, harboring strong biases against him, which frightened Elder An enough to deter him from letting her meet Xiao Yi thereafter.

Later on, he also gradually realized that Xiao Yi’s identity was increasingly complex, seeming to be the child of some unseen prestigious medical family. His interest faded away, only hoping that his granddaughter wouldn’t offend Xiao Yi—that would be blessing enough.

But the ways of the world can be quite peculiar. When he had utterly given up and discarded any expectations, his beloved granddaughter, who used to cry and insist that Xiao Yi was a fraudster, almost hating him enough to devour him, suddenly started to idolize Xiao Yi. She ceaselessly asked him about Xiao Yi, her heart completely entwined with him. Even after learning the full story from Dr. Zhang, Elder An remained in awe of the mysterious ways in which fate operated.

If this girl could truly end up with Xiao Yi, it would indeed be her good fortune.

A faint smile unbiddenly crept onto Elder An’s face.

But quickly, the smile on his face froze, and he let out a slight sigh, muttering inwardly, alas, this girl is now so spirited, unlike anything he had ever seen before. He could only hope that the two of them might have a favorable outcome and that she wouldn’t suffer any harm.

Had it been anyone else, he would have been very confident that, given his granddaughter’s excellence, there was no chance she wouldn’t succeed. Even the heirs of those major families would not intimidate him; he reckoned she would match them more than adequately. But when it came to Xiao Yi, he really had no assurance.

He saw Xiao Yi as exceedingly outstanding and knew from before that some exceptional girls were pursuing him, including a girl from the Zhang Family in Glass City, who seemed interested in him.

He hadn’t met the Zhang Family girl, but considering her family background and the endless praises from the Ma Family father and son, her credentials were surely impeccable.

Alas... my girl, in such matters, Grandpa will do everything he can to help you, but ultimately, how things develop will depend on you! No matter the outcome, Grandpa only hopes that you will be strong and face every rainbow and storm of life with the same courage that I have always taught you. Every bump and smooth stretch!

Elder An silently thought to himself.

.......................................

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Yi glanced at the time and, without further delay, put on a coat and walked out the door.

Ever since that Toyota had been scrapped, and perhaps because he had been too busy and already had two cars in the garage, Liu Yuan had not yet sent over a new car. The two cars in the garage—one the domestic BMW that Xiao Yi had paid for himself and the other the sports car—both felt too showy for Xiao Yi to drive regularly. He wasn’t planning on driving to Elder An’s house this time either.

Once outside the villa, Xiao Yi nodded to the bodyguard who was still diligently guarding the safety of his and Shen Xiaoxiao’s villas. His gaze fell on the villa across from him, where Shen Xiaoxiao lived, and a slight yearning appeared in his eyes. Since their last meeting, he hadn’t seen her for some days, though he occasionally noticed her lights on or her car coming and going, indications of her well-being.

Perhaps he would call her after he returned.

Xiao Yi thought to himself before striding towards the gated community’s entrance.

Elder An’s residential area was no stranger to Xiao Yi; this wasn’t his first visit. By now, he could navigate it with ease and soon reached the entrance to the complex after getting off the taxi.

"Excuse me, young man, could you please tell me how to get to Building 3 on First Street?"

Just as Xiao Yi was about to enter the community, a middle-aged man in his thirties approached him and inquired with a tone that, while polite, carried a certain self-assured authority not commonly seen in someone simply asking for directions. His face lacked the usual smile or earnest expression of typical inquirers.

Xiao Yi gave the middle-aged man a quick glance and his gaze soon shifted to the two people beside him; one was an elderly man holding a cane, supported on the other side by a middle-aged woman.

The elderly man looked calm and visionary. Despite his obvious old age and decrepit appearance, he possessed a dignified air that set him apart from the average senior. The woman by his side required no introduction; her ordinary facial features and slightly plump figure were overshadowed by the brilliant name-brand items adorning her from head to toe.

The golden earrings she wore were particularly ostentatious...

"Young man, I’m speaking to you,"

The middle-aged man saw that Xiao Yi hadn’t responded and was instead looking at the people behind him. His brows furrowed slightly, and just as he was about to say something, the woman beside him cut in.

Her voice was condescending, and as she looked at Xiao Yi in his simple clothes, she seemed to dismiss him, as if their asking him for directions was a blessing he should be grateful for from a previous life—he should consider it an honor!

At the sound of the woman’s voice, Xiao Yi slowly came back to reality and glanced at her. He chose not to engage and simply smiled faintly before turning to lead the way.

The middle-aged man was momentarily surprised by Xiao Yi’s response as though he hadn’t expected such coincidence but upon observing Xiao Yi, he didn’t suspect any trickery and quickly moved to support the elder from the other side, following Xiao Yi’s steps.

"Elder, if I may offer some advice, your health doesn’t seem very good. If possible, you should get checked out at a hospital,"

After walking a short distance, Xiao Yi turned back to look at the old man, hesitating briefly before speaking up, "If you trust me, I have some medical knowledge and could take your pulse and check you over more thoroughly."

Although his impression of the middle-aged woman wasn’t favorable, he felt a certain respect for the elder. From the very first glimpse he had of him, he could tell the elder’s health was precarious and that he was in a critical state, which, if not treated promptly, could have dire consequences.

"Eh?"

On hearing Xiao Yi’s words, all three were taken aback, surprised by what he said and his apparent knowledge. However, as they looked at the elder, a sense of realization crossed their faces and they looked at Xiao Yi with disdain and caution, as if guarding against him, fearing ulterior motives or intentions.

"Oh, who would have thought the young man knows medicine? How..."

The middle-aged woman openly regarded Xiao Yi with scorn and mockery in her voice.

If it hadn’t been for the elder glaring at her to silence her, she would have likely gone on, but even though she stopped talking under the elder’s stern look, her eyes did not soften.

"Thank you for your concern, young man. I shall certainly have a check-up soon,"

The elder, who had been silently supported in the middle, cast a stern glance at the woman by his side, quieting her before turning back to Xiao Yi. He nodded slightly, and though his voice conveyed thanks and sounded polite, it was laced with a cold detachment and distance, clearly signaling his disinterest in further conversation or in Xiao Yi offering any more advice.

It seemed the old saying was true: Do not transmit the profound way lightly, do not knock on the door to administer medicine. His well-intentioned offer had been met with the same wariness as if he were a thief. They had treated him with such an attitude, it was as if he had wasted his effort completely!

Xiao Yi had not expected such a reaction to his gesture of kindness. He was taken aback and it took him a while to regain his composure. Shaking his head, he realized his good intentions were for naught (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to vote for it at qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation.).
