Chapter 683: Chapter 680: Goodbye

(I’m really sorry. From yesterday until today, my computer suddenly had a problem, and I’ve been very busy here, unable to find a computer, until just now to update! I’ll post three updates in a row for now, and there should be another one later, but it might be late, so don’t wait for it! See you tomorrow!)

Chapter 680: Seeing Again

At first, like everyone else, she thought Zeng Xiaoxiao was making a fool of herself, treating Xiao Yi like a novel toy, and that after a while, when the novelty wore off, Xiao Yi’s fate would be just like the others who had been toyed with by her, in a state wishing for death.

But later she realized that wasn’t the case. Zeng Xiaoxiao kept staying with him and even seemed to enjoy his company quite a bit, and even, to a certain extent, appeared somewhat fearful of Xiao Yi.

This discovery surprised her.

If Zeng Xiaoxiao was the person in their class who understood her, Zhao Yuhua, the most, without a doubt, she, Zhao Yuhua, was the person who understood Zeng Xiaoxiao the most. As the legitimate granddaughter of the Zhao Family and the next in line for leadership, the little princess of the Zhao Family, Zhao Yuhua was very clear that Zeng Xiaoxiao, the girl from the Zeng family, was definitely not the kind of simple, carefree, and naive girl the other students imagined her to be.

To borrow a popular saying, anyone who took her for a fool was the real idiot and imbecile.

In fact, the only person in the next generation of the Zeng family she truly cared about was this girl who couldn’t cultivate, not her seemingly astute sister who was also a cultivator with decent cultivation talent and who, being in the city police force at a young age, was already at the level of a deputy chief and always protecting Zeng Xiaoxiao.

It wasn’t the brother who loved Zeng Xiaoxiao very much and left school to join the military after a gambling fight with a scion of the Li Family.

It wasn’t because of Zeng Xiaoxiao’s abnormally high IQ and her impressive computer skills, but the terrifying wisdom she displayed. Yes, wisdom!

She had seriously studied her, and many of the seemingly pointless things she had done growing up, such as fighting with a child over a small gourd, turned out to have far-reaching impacts afterward: either helping the Zeng family eliminate a huge potential enemy, bringing a great ally to the Zeng family, or something else...

Why was Zeng Xiaoxiao sticking so close to Xiao Yi?

Her doubt soon got cleared up when she found that the somewhat rustic-looking boy was also a Martial Path Cultivator. She guessed that it was probably for this reason that Zeng Xiaoxiao was being friendly with him, perhaps hoping to recruit support for the Zeng family.

Having explained it to herself, she was relieved. Although Xiao Yi was a Martial Path Cultivator and had reached the Bone Tempering Period, which mildly surprised her, it was not enough for her to be concerned. After all, the Zhao and Zeng families were different; the Zhao Family did not lack masters, and the term "talented individuals" didn’t overstate it at all—a cultivator at the Bone Tempering Period wasn’t deemed significant enough for her to take note.

Later, pressured by Xiao Yi, Gao Junjie, that fool, couldn’t help but pursue her—an endeavor she found meaningless and idiotic. She didn’t know why, but on a whim, she sat next to Xiao Yi, used him for a moment, and in that way retaliated against him for it was he who had driven Gao Junjie to that state.

But unexpectedly, seating next to him on a momentary impulse led to some special discoveries; she found that upon observing him closely, Xiao Yi was inscrutable.

When he faced her, the expression on his face was nothing like any other man she had ever encountered...

Furthermore, to her discovery, Beichen Feng seemed to regard him with a new level of respect...

One thing after another made her realize that this person constantly surprised others, continuously creating miracles. Curiosity about him grew within her, though it remained only in silent observation.

During the school sports festival, she didn’t know why, but when registering for the events, she suddenly thought of him and included his name.

She had assumed Xiao Yi would refuse because a cultivator at the Bone Tempering Period like him would not be that interested in a sports event with no significant prize money. Unexpectedly, Xiao Yi accepted and even came to watch her events after his own.

For many years, aside from her grandfather and the grandmother from the main Glass City family who taught her Mysterious Ice Jue, she’d become accustomed to being alone, to thinking alone, doing things on her own without needing anyone’s support or care, gradually not receiving any either.

But when she saw Xiao Yi at her side, cheering for her, when she saw the look he gave her, she felt as though she saw in his eyes an understanding of her loneliness. A unique feeling suddenly emerged in her heart for the first time; at first, she didn’t understand it, but later, through some books and conversations with her grandfather, she realized it could be the feeling of friendship or perhaps, being understood.

Xiao Yi’s understanding gaze made her feelings complicated. Being understood is undoubtedly a happy thing, and she was no exception, yet she also felt somewhat uncomfortable.

She had always been a proud person, believing aside from those she cared about, she needed no one else’s understanding nor did she want it.

No matter what, after all, he had come to support her, to cheer her on. Regardless of whether she liked it or not, she didn’t like owing someone, so she went to encourage him in his event as well. However, she hadn’t expected an incident on the field: someone threw a ball at Xiao Yi, and almost on instinct, she activated her Spiritual Sense and apprehended the person.

Unfortunately, the person in question was an idiot; her efforts were in vain. She could only let him go and, to make matters worse, she encountered Li Zhengyi, who had taken an interest in her because of the athletic meet. She never expected Xiao Yi to appear there too. When faced with Li Zhengyi, she didn’t even think before pulling Xiao Yi into the situation, using him as her shield...

She never understood why she had acted that way at the time. Was it because of his annoyingly smug smile, or was it for some other reason...

Keep in mind that, although Li Zhengyi was quite capable, she didn’t necessarily need to use Xiao Yi as a shield. Using such an outmoded tactic wasn’t the only solution she had. At least three other methods could have resolved her issue...

But now, that issue didn’t matter anymore. In fact, she felt somewhat grateful for whatever reason had led her to make that choice. If she hadn’t made that decision, she wouldn’t have seen this side of Xiao Yi and wouldn’t have gained such an understanding of him today...

Who is he, really? What kind of person is he?

As she thought about Xiao Yi’s various behaviors today, Zhao Yuhua’s gaze became lost once again.

"Um, Classmate Zhao, could you... please stop staring at me like that?"

Xiao Yi, having just snapped back from his imagination of Li Zhengyi’s tragic fate, noticed Zhao Yuhua’s odd glances that kept flickering his way. His face immediately took on an uncomfortable expression.

If it had been anyone else, he might not have felt so awkward. However, this was Zhao Yuhua, and he had never seen so many expressions, so vivid, on her face before.

Hearing Xiao Yi’s voice pulled Zhao Yuhua back to reality. Her face, rarely showing any emotion, blushed slightly, but it was only for a moment before she regained her usual coolness, fixing her gaze firmly on the road ahead.

The carriage then fell into silence.

After a few moments of quiet, Zhao Yuhua turned to look at Xiao Yi. He seemed to be awkwardly searching for a topic to break the silence. She said faintly, "For what happened today... thank you."

"Uh... you’re welcome."

Xiao Yi was momentarily taken aback but then understood what Zhao Yuhua’s thanks were for. After the day’s events, unless something unexpected happened, the trouble Zhao Yuhua had been in should now be resolved.

In front of Zhao Yuhua, Li Zhengyi had rushed forward to make unwelcome advances, saying so many ’brilliant’ things. He had thoroughly exposed his ugliest sides. Even if Li Zhengyi had the thickest skin, he likely wouldn’t have the nerve to bother Zhao Yuhua again.

With the issue resolved and the person involved thanking him, Xiao Yi should be pleased. Yet, for some reason, he felt a bit awkward.

He couldn’t quite pinpoint where the awkwardness lied.

Although Zhao Yuhua was driving relatively slowly, it was still a car with four wheels, a BMW at that. Given the ten-odd kilometers’ distance and the fact it was night with past rush hour, the roads were especially clear, and in no time they had reached the gate of Z University, where they had originally met earlier.

"Thank you!"

As the car stopped and Xiao Yi got out, Zhao Yuhua’s lips moved slightly, as if she wanted to say something more, but in the end, it turned into those three words yet again.

"You’re welcome, and I should thank you too!"

Xiao Yi paused, puzzled as to why Zhao Yuhua would thank him again, but then he smiled warmly, "I got to taste quite a few good wines today!"

"Goodbye."

Zhao Yuhua fell silent for a moment before nodding slowly.

"Goodbye!"

Xiao Yi closed the car door and watched as the BMW slowly drove away into the night. The smile on his face gradually solidified, and his eyes held a hint of faint melancholy and loss. The matter with Li Zhengyi was finally settled; the entanglement with Zhao Yuhua was presumably over. From now on, would they return to their previous state, where they never crossed paths again?
