"Alright, that’s settled then. I’ll go call him in."
Finally, Shen Xiaoxiao finished speaking and turned back to the main topic. She patted Xiao Yi’s shoulder and turned to walk toward the door.
"Hey, hey, hey... Sister Shen, wait a minute."
When Xiao Yi saw Shen Xiaoxiao’s movements, he finally snapped back to reality and hurriedly grabbed her again, speaking earnestly, "Sister Shen, actually, I did tell a little lie just now, but it’s really not necessary to hire a bodyguard anymore. Liu Dongjun really is injured, you can go ask around if you don’t believe me. What you said earlier was right, during my time outside the city, I encountered a master. It was him who injured Liu Dongjun for me. But he does not wish to come forward, so... so people were told that I was the one who injured him."
"Xiao Yi..."
"Sister Shen, really, if you don’t believe it, go check it out right now!"
Upon hearing Xiao Yi’s words, Shen Xiaoxiao’s heart instantly felt a mix of amusement and anger. How could this kid never grow up? She had just jokingly mentioned it, and Xiao Yi claimed it was a master—wasn’t he playing her for a fool? Was he treating her like an idiot, or was he considering himself the fool?
But before she could open her mouth to speak, Xiao Yi interrupted her. Seeing the earnest and anxious look on Xiao Yi’s face, doubt finally started to creep into her heart, "Are you really telling the truth?"
Without waiting for Xiao Yi to respond, she took out her mobile phone, found a number, and began inquiring.
The moment the call connected and after a few questions, the expression on her face shifted to one of odd curiosity as she listened to the answer on the other end of the phone. She put down the phone, staring intensely at Xiao Yi with an inquisitive gaze.
"So, Sister Shen, I didn’t lie to you, did I? What I said was true, right?"
Xiao Yi saw Shen Xiaoxiao’s expression just now and knew she had verified the news of Liu Dongjun’s injury. Being stared at so intently by her gaze made him feel extremely uncomfortable and he awkwardly responded.
"Did you really encounter a master?"
Shen Xiaoxiao finally regained her composure, but her face still wore a peculiar expression as she spoke to Xiao Yi.
It wasn’t that she was too anything; rather, this matter had taken such a swift turn that her brain was struggling to catch up, to accept it. She had just been speaking casually, never expecting it to actually be true.
"Really!"
Xiao Yi nodded with a tinge of guilt. As the words left his mouth, he couldn’t help but recall that monk. Only then did he allow himself a bit of peace, silently musing, "This doesn’t count as lying; I really did encounter a master."
"Could you tell me about how you met this master? What is he like? Tell me all about it in detail, will you?"
Shen Xiaoxiao, in her life, had experienced plenty, but something akin to a novel’s fantastic encounter was new to her. She never imagined it happening to someone close to her, her eyes now revealing a curious intrigue as she asked.
Xiao Yi didn’t realize that Shen Xiaoxiao’s questions were purely out of curiosity—he thought she was still skeptical of his story. With things having gone this far, he had no choice but to continue to make her believe. Xiao Yi gritted his teeth inwardly and began to recount the story of the monk, making slight alterations to the details, such as changing their meeting location to an obscure small town elsewhere.
"Uh... it’s really unexpected. There actually exists such lofty and otherworldly masters in this world!"
After listening to Xiao Yi’s narration, Shen Xiaoxiao couldn’t suppress a wistful and admiring look in her eyes. She had no reason to doubt what Xiao Yi told her. Aside from the fact that the basics of his story were true, with only minor details altered, the more important reason was her own background and knowledge, which was unlike that of an ordinary girl. She knew about the existence of such highly skilled individuals, like how she knew about the prowess of Liu Dongjun; she was aware that the world truly was home to many such extraordinary people.
Otherwise, no matter how convincingly Xiao Yi spoke, she wouldn’t have believed him so readily.
There definitely were some; the old man was one—wasn’t that monk one, and her own old man another?
Watching Shen Xiaoxiao’s expressive and contemplative demeanor, Xiao Yi couldn’t help but muse internally.
"By the way, Xiao Yi, is that master still with you? Could you invite him to meet with me? How do you usually get in touch with him?"
After her moment of reflection, Shen Xiaoxiao suddenly seemed excited, looking eagerly at Xiao Yi as she posed her questions.
"Well, Sister Shen, I’m sorry, but that’s probably not possible. That master only said he’d help me this one time, and after resolving the issue, he left. He used to find me whenever it was necessary."
Xiao Yi felt a jolt in his heart, his eyes flickering with a brief panic; barely managing to lift his head, he reluctantly faced Shen Xiaoxiao who was looking at him expectantly.
Luckily, Shen Xiaoxiao wasn’t paying attention to that detail, nor did she notice. Hearing Xiao Yi’s words, she didn’t give it much thought, merely letting out a small sigh, "It seems I am not fated to meet this master after all. It’s a pity I won’t have the chance."
Xiao Yi watched Shen Xiaoxiao’s face filled with pity and couldn’t help but smile bitterly to himself. He felt the same regret, wondering when he would see him again.
"However, no matter what, now that Liu Dongjun is injured, he probably won’t come to trouble you for a while. This is good news for us. Xiao Yi, it seems your luck is really not bad," Sister Shen said with a chuckle. "This time, it looks like you’ve dodged a bullet."
After all, Shen Xiaoxiao wasn’t the type to dwell on things. Aside from her curiosity about the chivalry and complex emotions of the Jianghu, she wasn’t overly impressed by the real masters that seemed so mysterious to ordinary people. She could meet them anytime she wanted. After sighing, she quickly snapped out of that mood and turned to Xiao Yi with a smile.
"Yeah, haha."
Xiao Yi didn’t know what to say, so he just laughed along.
But what Shen Xiaoxiao said was also what he felt deeply. If not for his good fortune in encountering that monk, he might not be standing here right now.
"But Xiao Yi, you still can’t be careless. Liu Dongjun is not to be underestimated. Injured as he is, once he recovers, he’ll probably hate you even more. He might even be relentless in his pursuit of you. You must be careful. If anything unusual happens, make sure to tell me right away, okay? I’ll be keeping an eye out for you," Sister Shen said after a while, with a serious expression.
What she didn’t realize was that she had already made a big deal out of this incident, but in fact, she still underestimated its impact. She thought that after Liu Dongjun recovered, he might come to settle scores with Xiao Yi, but she didn’t know the Liu Family was already in complete turmoil over this.
"Understood."
Xiao Yi thought to himself that if Liu Dongjun had any sense, he wouldn’t dare come after him again after this incident. However, he knew Xiaoxiao said this out of concern for him and so he nodded emphatically.
"Okay, I’ve been busy all day and I’m a bit tired. I should go back now. You just came back and went out again, so get some rest early tonight. Remember, call me anytime if anything happens."
With everything said and Xiao Yi unharmed, Shen Xiaoxiao finally felt at ease. The exhaustion she had been suppressing suddenly came flooding back.
"Okay, Sister Shen, I really appreciate all the trouble you’ve gone through for me."
Xiao Yi nodded, seeing the tiredness on Shen Xiaoxiao’s face and again expressing his sincere thanks and guilt.
"If you talk like that again, you’re going to make me feel like an outsider. Say it again, and I won’t acknowledge you," Xiaoxiao said with a feigned scold.
Xiao Yi chuckled and escorted Xiaoxiao as she left.
As he caught the surprised looks from the five bodyguards and then watched them follow Xiaoxiao into the night, Xiao Yi slowly turned and headed back inside to take a shower and begin his nightly cultivation.
But as he turned, he stopped in his tracks and a bitter smile crept onto his face.
It seemed he hadn’t managed to convince Sister Shen to give up the idea of providing him with bodyguards after all.
Well, the overt bodyguard had now turned into a covert one!
Sensing the gaze of a Bone Tempering Period expert lurking in the darkness behind him, returning and lingering in a corner by his villa, Xiao Yi shook his head helplessly, gently closed the door to the villa, and went upstairs.
If she insisted on having him here, let him stay. He wasn’t going to run out and tell Xiaoxiao now. As long as he didn’t follow him around all day, it would be fine. Otherwise, he would find a way to make him leave.
Back on the second floor, after securing the doors and windows, and drawing the curtains, Xiao Yi took a cool shower and sat cross-legged on the bed to begin his daily practice, focusing intently on his cultivation.
.........
"Young Master Jie, are we really going to let today’s events slide just like that?"
In a high-end leisure club in G City, Li Zijie sat gloomily in his chair, looking across at Qian Xiaojie, who shared a similarly dark expression, and at Qian Xiaofeng, who still showed some signs of injury, although they had greatly diminished since the day.
"Hmph, the old man has spoken. What else can we do?"
Qian Xiaojie’s face was also very grim. Although he was the only one not beaten that morning, that was because he had traded his pride for peace. He couldn’t bear the indignity. It was the first time in his life that as the son of the Qian Family’s current patriarch, he’d been extorted and forced to beg so humiliatingly!
