Chapter 182: Chapter 183: An Lili_2
The cost is simply too high!
How many people are willing to endure a lifetime of solitude to explore and practice, to learn traditional Chinese medicine? Even if they are willing to study and practice this way, how many have the talent to truly grasp the unique charm of traditional Chinese medicine?
With a soft sigh, Xiao Yi turned and buried himself in the sea of medical books as clean as a mist. He had no intention of becoming a savior of traditional Chinese medicine, and the old man never intended to make him such a hero.
The old man had said, being a hero was too tiring and too lonely. It was better to be simple, genuine, and carefree, wandering the world at will and enjoying life.
Reaching out, he took out a "Herbal Medicine Classic" and stood under the bookshelf, quietly beginning to read.
"Li Zijie, why are you following me here?"
Just as Xiao Yi was concentrating on the medical book in front of him, a woman dressed in white, not particularly beautiful but with a refined and intellectual air, walked in. Behind her followed a handsome young man with a playful grin. The woman would go wherever the young man followed. After a few steps, she could no longer contain herself and turned around to look at the grinning student, frowning in dissatisfaction.
"Lili, I’m a student of the Medical College, so of course I can come here to read books."
The young man disregarded the woman’s disapproving look and said with a laugh.
"You..."
The woman, feeling helpless against the young man’s shameless demeanor but knowing that his excuse was just that, shot him an angry look and stamped her foot, then turned her head, intending to ignore him and read her own book.
But as she turned around, she saw that in front of the shelf full of Traditional Chinese Medicine books -- which usually no one would come to read, and even if someone did, they would flip through it casually and then leave -- a slender figure stood reading something intensely.
After a moment of surprise, she glimpsed the grinning young man next to her; a flash of inspiration struck her and her expression darkened. "Li Zijie, haven’t you always disbelieved that I have a boyfriend? He’s right here; you can give up and leave now."
"Your boyfriend?" Upon hearing her words, the young man’s face could no longer maintain his cheerful expression; his look changed for a moment, his eyes scanned the surroundings, and after a full circle, he laughed, "Lili, you’re such a joker. There’s just you and me here. Where’s this boyfriend of yours?"
"Do you have a problem with your eyes? There are only two people here?"
The woman glanced at Xiao Yi, then turned to the young man with a calm look on her face.
"You can’t mean... him?"
The young man, seeing the woman’s fearless expression, glanced around again and his gaze fell on Xiao Yi, speaking in disbelief.
"Why can’t it be him?"
The woman countered, stepping forward, she affectionately grabbed Xiao Yi’s hand, her gaze toward the young man as if to say, "Can you give up now?"
Xiao Yi had been silently reciting the properties of a few herbs he had nearly forgotten, and suddenly he smelled a faint fragrance and felt his arm being taken by a pair of small hands. Almost subconsciously, he thought to shake her off, but the moment he moved, he saw clearly that it was a woman in front of him and felt no malice, only then did he hurriedly draw back his energy, looking at the woman with astonishment.
"Lili, stop joking around."
The young man watched the woman actually reach out and grab Xiao Yi’s hand, his expression changed in an instant, but when he saw Xiao Yi’s reaction, he couldn’t help but reveal a relaxed smile, thinking to himself, ’That was close, I almost fell for it.’
"I’m not joking with you; he really is my boyfriend."
The woman’s face remained composed.
"Lili, why do you have to do this?"
The young man showed a troubled look, "Even if you wanted to pull this old trick next time, to find a fake boyfriend as an excuse to reject me, you should at least find someone plausible. Why just grab any random guy off the street to play the part?"
As he spoke, the young man glanced at Xiao Yi with utmost disdain. Oh no, it wasn’t disdain, he simply ignored him as if he didn’t exist at all.
After listening to the exchange between the two, Xiao Yi understood what was happening. He couldn’t help but smile wryly. What’s been going on lately? Did his face have a sign reading ’shield’ on it?
Just a few days ago, he had served as a shield for Shen Xiaoxiao, and now, coming to the library to find a book, he had once again been pulled in to play the role.
He instinctively wanted to refuse; he was not a professional shield, and even if he was, this girl hadn’t paid him, and he had no obligation to work for her. But after hearing the young man’s words, he suddenly felt annoyed.
What did this guy mean?
