"You..."
The nurse hadn’t expected Xiao Yi to be so sharp-tongued and, for a moment, his words left her complexion alternating between pale and flushed with anger, rendering her speechless while her eyes almost seemed to spew fire. However, she quickly regained her composure and said to the doctor, "Doctor Wang, for patients who don’t cooperate with the treatment, it’s better if we don’t bother with them, to avoid bringing trouble upon ourselves."
"You don’t need to go pay; just go back where you came from," Doctor Wang said angrily without a moment’s hesitation after hearing the nurse’s suggestion.
Hearing the doctor’s words, the expressions of Li Xiaomei and Wang Qingqing next to him changed immediately, with Wang Qingqing’s face turning deathly pale. Li Xiaomei’s expression also started to show some blame toward Xiao Yi. Although she was also angry with the doctor and nurse, she was in severe pain, and the doctor was her only hope of relief.
"You don’t need to rush us out; I’ll leave after asking a few questions. We’ve taken the trouble to queue up and register, and we’ve paid, so asking a few questions can’t be too much, right? Even if it causes a disturbance, we are not in the wrong," Xiao Yi said firmly.
Wang Qingqing was about to say something conciliatory and remind Xiao Yi not to offend the doctor further, but before she could speak, Xiao Yi had already taken the lead. His face showed no signs of intimidation by the doctor and nurse; he remained calm.
"Hmph!"
Doctor Wang felt a jolt in his heart when he heard Xiao Yi mention causing a disturbance; he was currently in a critical period for a professional evaluation. Any trouble could leave a bad impression on the review committee, potentially ruining his chances.
Rather than insisting on sending them away, Doctor Wang merely gave a cold snort, not ready to concede just yet.
Seeing Doctor Wang’s expression, Xiao Yi knew he’d hit a sore spot; the doctor also feared a disturbance. Xiao Yi didn’t take his attitude seriously and, with a trace of disdain in his smile, he began to interrogate, "I’d like to ask, Doctor, on what basis did you diagnose the patient with acute appendicitis?"
"That’s my specialty," Doctor Wang retorted coldly, disdain flickering in his eyes.
With simpler symptoms, he might not have been able to diagnose, but he had treated several cases of acute appendicitis. And what could a kid like Xiao Yi question or understand?
Like the nurse, Doctor Wang also thought Xiao Yi was probably just a student from a nearby Medical College who had attended a few classes and heard a few terms, fancying himself a capable doctor ready to save lives. He felt Xiao Yi was the type who liked to show off his supposed skills whenever he had the chance.
"A specialty, an impressive one indeed!" Xiao Yi sarcastically remarked with a cold smirk, choosing not to pursue the matter further. He fixed Doctor Wang with a piercing gaze and asked, "So, you’ve diagnosed her with appendicitis then?"
"Correct!"
Director Wang felt uneasy under Xiao Yi’s intense scrutiny, questioning for a moment if his diagnosis might have been incorrect. However, he quickly dismissed the thought, confidently returning Xiao Yi’s gaze. He believed in his diagnosis; the woman’s symptoms clearly indicated acute appendicitis.
Even if he was wrong, this kid would know nothing about it!
"Then, are all these medications intended for treating acute appendicitis?" Xiao Yi questioned further, lifting the prescription in his hand.
Hearing Director Wang nod again in confirmation, Xiao Yi’s mocking smile deepened.
"Correct."
Director Wang’s heart missed a beat. In addition to medications for appendicitis, the prescription included two or three other drugs that were merely dietary supplements and completely unnecessary, yet they were expensive. Even the actual medications for appendicitis were more expensive than necessary; there were cheaper, local options available, but he had prescribed costly imported drugs.
While he puzzled over why Xiao Yi was questioning him, he clenched his teeth and nodded.
He refused to believe that Xiao Yi, who looked to be at most a sophomore, could recognize any of the medications.
"Are you sure they all are?" Xiao Yi asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Certain, just go and pay quickly instead of wasting time here. If you delay the treatment, don’t blame me!"
Director Wang’s heart skipped again, but he was still convinced that Xiao Yi couldn’t possibly know what he had prescribed. Even if he did, so what? With that thought, he grew tired of Xiao Yi’s questioning and sharply scolded him. He could also tell that Wang Qingqing and the patient appeared more compliant, so he glared fiercely at them as well.
