Chapter 103: Chapter 105: Seeing a Doctor (Part 1)

"Ah, that’s great!"

Wang Qingqing hadn’t expected Xiao Yi to say he would accompany her, and after a moment of stunned silence, she suddenly leapt up with joy. But immediately, she hesitated and said, "But, Xiao Yi, won’t it interfere with anything you have to do?"

"It’s all right, I don’t have anything else this morning."

Xiao Yi smiled, his determination to help Wang Qingqing solidifying in his heart.

"That’s good."

When Wang Qingqing heard that Xiao Yi was free, she felt relieved, smiled, and then pointed to a bus stop not far ahead, "Let’s go over there to catch the bus, there’s a station just ahead."

"No need for that, let’s take a taxi. It will be quicker."

Xiao Yi smiled and hailed a cab with a wave of his hand.

Wang Qingqing hesitated but didn’t say anything. She watched the taxi pull up and got in, reassuring herself that it wasn’t too far away and that she could consider it a free tutoring session.

Xiao Yi noticed Wang Qingqing’s expression but didn’t say anything. He walked around to the other side of the car, opened the door, and sat down.

From that intersection to the Provincial People’s Hospital, it wasn’t particularly far, but for Wang Qingqing, every minute and second felt like torture. Although she had never been to the Provincial People’s Hospital, she often passed it when she took the bus to her tutoring jobs. In the past, these bus rides had seemed to cover only a few stops and appeared to be quite close, but now, in the taxi, the distance seemed much longer. As the meter climbed to fifty yuan, her heart tightened. A single tutoring session only earned her thirty yuan, and fifty was nearly income from two sessions.

With every red light they encountered, she cursed inwardly at their lengthy duration.

Fortunately, just as her heart felt like it might leap out of her chest, the taxi finally stopped steadily at the curb, and the driver announced with a pleasant voice, "We’ve arrived at the Provincial People’s Hospital."

Wang Qingqing let out a long sigh of relief, glanced at the meter, and felt a bit more at ease. Fifty-six yuan was still within an acceptable range. She reached for her wallet.

"Driver, here’s the fare, and keep the change."

However, before her hand could touch her wallet, Xiao Yi had already handed over a fifty and a twenty yuan bill to the driver.

"We’ve arrived, let’s get out."

Watching the driver take the money with a smile, Xiao Yi then turned to Wang Qingqing with a smile of his own.

"This, Xiao Yi, how could you pay? Give it back to me, let me do it!"

Wang Qingqing finally came to her senses and hurriedly spoke to the driver while reaching for her wallet.

"You can pay on the way back; let’s not affect the driver’s business for now. Okay, no hesitations, let’s get out and see your aunt."

Xiao Yi held her hand back with a smile, seeing she was still hesitant, he quickly added,

"Then... it’s settled, I’ll let you pay on the way back."

Wang Qingqing reluctantly put her wallet away, looking resolutely at Xiao Yi.

"Mhm, I definitely won’t compete with you on the way back."

Xiao Yi looked at Wang Qingqing’s stubborn expression, amused internally. He nodded, agreeing to her request.

He had already decided they would take the bus back if they weren’t in a hurry.

From Wang Qingqing’s expression earlier, he knew that the taxi fare was a significant amount for her, and he didn’t want her to waste that money unnecessarily.

Wang Qingqing didn’t think much of it. Hearing Xiao Yi agree to her terms, she relaxed and got out of the taxi along with him.

The Provincial People’s Hospital was a well-established institution with a long history, tracing back to before the republic was founded. It was also known as a prestigious hospital within the province. Although affiliated hospitals of Z University and other hospitals had rapidly developed in recent years, this old-brand hospital had continued to wield significant influence. It provided treatment not just to patients from within the province, but also to those from neighboring provinces with serious conditions.

From the parking area at the entrance to the outpatient department building, there was a constant stream of people, bustling with activity, and occasionally one could see doctors and nurses moving hurriedly.

Xiao Yi and Wang Qingqing, following the address given by Wang Qingqing’s aunt, arrived at the emergency department’s consultation room.

As soon as they approached the consultation room, they saw a dark-complexioned woman sitting in agony on a waiting chair near the door, clutching her stomach with one hand and gripping her medical record and registration form with the other. People of various ages surrounded her, clearly all waiting their turn for consultation.

"Auntie!"

Upon seeing the woman from a distance, Wang Qingqing immediately showed a look of joy and called out, quickening her pace and rushing over.

"Qingqing!"

The woman, ecstatic to see Wang Qingqing, called out in return. However, as soon as her call ended, she was struck with a sharp pain in her stomach and bowed her head, clutching her belly.

"Auntie, are you okay?"

As Wang Qingqing reached the woman, she saw beads of sweat on the aunt’s face from the severity of the pain. Wang Qingqing asked with concern.

"Li Xiaomei."

Just as Xiao Yi was about to speak up, he heard a nurse call out from inside.

"Auntie, it’s your turn, I’ll help you inside."

Upon hearing the nurse’s voice, Wang Qingqing immediately beamed and helped her aunt up to go inside. Her Aunt’s name was indeed Li Xiaomei.

Xiao Yi thought for a moment and followed them in.

"Doctor, please take a look at my aunt."

As soon as they entered the consultation room, Wang Qingqing anxiously addressed the doctor sitting behind a desk wearing a white coat and showing no emotion, appearing to be in his forties. Her aunt’s condition seemed to have worsened dramatically after the walk. She was in so much pain that her face was contorted, and she couldn’t even speak.

"Help her sit over there."

While the patient was visibly desperate, the doctor remained indifferent, not even lifting his head as he told them coldly to seat her, then slowly resumed typing on his computer, apparently busy with something else.

Xiao Yi frowned slightly at the sight of the doctor’s demeanor and a trace of sternness flashed across his eyes.
