Chapter 834: Chapter 830: After All, It’s the Same

"Classmates, take a look—who’s here from our class?" Qian Long walked into the room and loudly announced to the private dining area.

Originally, the dozens of men and women in the room were deeply engrossed in conversation, but now all eyes immediately shifted toward Qian Long and the doorway.

More specifically, toward Chen Yang, who stood beside Qian Long at the entrance.

"Yo, isn’t this our class’s top student, Chen Yang!"

"Sure enough, it’s Chen Yang! The star student of the class!"

"Chen Yang, you’re here too? Come in, sit down, sit down."

...

All of the old classmates instantly recognized Chen Yang, and each one enthusiastically invited him to take a seat.

Seeing his old classmates’ warm reception, Chen Yang naturally felt quite happy.

"Haha, long time no see, everyone."

Chen Yang greeted them with a smile and, under Qian Long’s arrangement, found himself a spot to sit. Qian Long took the seat next to him.

Once Chen Yang was seated, the classmates naturally began chatting about him.

"Chen Yang, you’re the top student. How are things going for you? Got any opportunities to help out an old classmate?"

"Haha, yeah, Chen Yang! I heard you got into a good university after the college entrance exams. So, what’s your job now?"

...

The classmates were all highly curious about Chen Yang’s current career, since during their school years, he had been the class’s top student.

Back then, no one truly understood the significance of academic achievement. But now, as adults, the memory of Chen Yang’s grades directly translated to expectations of his current success.

"Um... I..."

Seeing his classmates so eager, Chen Yang didn’t intend to hide anything and was about to share his current situation.

But before he could speak, Qian Long interrupted him.

"Oh, this might disappoint everyone, but Chen Yang isn’t doing so great these days. He’s working as a waiter in a restaurant out in the suburbs," Qian Long answered directly for him.

The classmates who asked the questions now had slight changes in their expressions, but for the most part, their reactions were ones of surprise.

"No way, that can’t be right, Qian Long. Don’t joke around. Chen Yang’s grades were known by everyone in the class. How could he be a waiter?"

"Yeah, Chen Yang was always at the top of the class, and he went to a good university. How could this be possible?"

The men and women in the class showed clear skepticism.

Seeing their disbelief, Qian Long immediately added, "It’s true! I ran into him at the restaurant just the other day. Why would I lie to you about this?"

It was hard to tell whether Qian Long lacked social tact or whether he was intentionally doing this. He even turned to Chen Yang for confirmation, asking him to back up his claims.

"Chen Yang, say something. I didn’t make this up, did I?"

Chen Yang found himself in an awkward position, but he didn’t say much. He simply nodded, "Mm, he’s right; it’s true."

"Haha, you see? I wasn’t lying! Chen Yang’s situation now really isn’t great. Those of you hoping to network with someone more promising might want to wait until our class’s ’Mr. Liu’ arrives," Qian Long laughed loudly after seeing Chen Yang nod.

The other classmates followed suit with awkward chuckles, their expressions slightly uneasy.

Soon, interest in Chen Yang seemed to vanish entirely. They cast a quick glance in his direction but didn’t bother engaging further, instead turning their attention to conversations with other people.

This stark contrast in attitude left Chen Yang momentarily stunned.

This change was way too abrupt.

When they thought he was successful, everyone was all enthusiasm and scrambling to sit near him.

But the moment they found out he worked as a waiter, they instantly lost interest, not even bothering with simple pleasantries?

Chen Yang was stunned for a few seconds before forcing a bitter smile.

Earlier, he’d believed that his classmates were different.

Now it seemed like he’d thought too much. The snobbishness of adults was unavoidable after all.

While he felt a tinge of disappointment, it wasn’t something he found hard to accept.

Originally, he’d hoped to reconnect with old classmates, but it was clear now that there was no need. He might as well eat his meal quietly and leave afterward.

Besides, given his current mindset, there was no reason for him to concern himself with what these classmates thought. How they acted was their issue; interfacing with them in the future would likely be rare anyway.

So, Chen Yang sat quietly in his seat, watching others engage in lively discussion.

About ten minutes passed when someone else walked through the door.

The commotion and excitement that erupted in the private dining area surpassed the earlier reception given to Chen Yang.

The cause of such a fuss? The newcomer was none other than Liu Xuebin—the "Mr. Liu" that Qian Long mentioned just moments ago!

Back in high school, Liu Xuebin was famously known in the class as the "rich kid." His family was well-off.

Judging by his current attire, it was obvious that his prosperity had hardly diminished since those days. This explained the wildly enthusiastic reaction from the rest of the room.

"Oh my, isn’t this Liu Xuebin, our class’s very own rich heir? Long time no see!"

"Haha, Liu Xuebin! Do you still remember me? I was your desk mate!"

"Several years have gone by, but Liu Xuebin is still just as suave and dashing as ever."

...

Everyone in the room, except Chen Yang, stood up immediately to greet Liu Xuebin, with some even leaving their seats to strike up conversations.

It was as if they couldn’t bear falling behind others in earning his attention.

And Liu Xuebin, basking in their enthusiasm, seemed to enjoy it thoroughly.

"Haha, of course I remember. None of you have changed much!" Liu Xuebin chuckled, offering a few polite words before sitting down at the central seat in the room, as if he were the star of the gathering.

Once seated, he instantly became the focal point of the entire reunion, with everyone redirecting their attention toward him.

All the conversations revolved around Liu Xuebin.

"Whoa, Xuebin, I heard your family’s businesses are incredible now! They’ve doubled in size compared to when we were in high school."

"Xuebin, are you working at your dad’s company these days, or just relaxing at home? Keep in touch—we should meet up more often."

...

Nearly everyone in the room made an effort to connect with Liu Xuebin and build a relationship with him.

This included Qian Long, who left his seat next to Chen Yang to join the group converging around Liu Xuebin.

Chen Yang, however, remained at his spot, motionless, without paying much attention to Liu Xuebin.

At the moment, Chen Yang’s thoughts were singular: how come the food hadn’t been served yet? The sooner he could eat, the sooner he could leave. This kind of class reunion, steeped in social climbing and blatant favoritism, was not something he had wanted to attend.

While waiting at his seat, he didn’t expect Qian Long to suddenly notice him sitting alone.

Qian Long came over and, with an air of entitlement, patted Chen Yang’s shoulder, saying, "Hey Chen Yang, Xuebin’s arrived. Why aren’t you going over to say hello?"

Chen Yang couldn’t help but smirk at this. "Why should I say hello to him? Is he my boss, or does he pay me?"

Whoosh.

Though Chen Yang’s voice wasn’t loud, in the midst of the endless flattery aimed at Liu Xuebin, his words rang out sharply.

Everyone froze for a moment and uniformly turned their gazes toward Chen Yang, including Liu Xuebin, whose face subtly darkened as he looked at Chen Yang.

Clearly, this irritated Liu Xuebin, though he didn’t express his displeasure outright.
