Chapter 789: Chapter 785: Return Halfway
Woof woof!
As soon as Chen Yang spoke, Wangcai immediately became excited.
It barked twice, stood up, twitched its nose, and began sniffing the air.
Standing there, it twitched its nose several times, then fixed its gaze in one direction in the forest.
"Is there some aged herbs over there?" Chen Yang had been closely observing Wangcai’s reactions, so when he saw it look in one direction, he immediately assumed there were valuable herbs in that direction.
But before he could confirm it, Wangcai started barking loudly toward the direction in question.
Woof woof woof!
Wangcai’s sudden loud barking startled everyone, and Wang Hong and Wang Qingyue immediately looked over.
Then they turned to ask Chen Yang, "Brother Chen Yang, what’s with your dog? Why did it suddenly start barking?"
Chen Yang frowned; this situation also caught him off guard.
But he knew Wangcai’s nature well enough. If it barked this aggressively, it usually meant someone was in that direction.
"I’m not sure, but it must have detected something. Otherwise, it wouldn’t bark like this. Its nose is incredibly sharp," Chen Yang responded.
"Someone? Out here in the wilderness? That’s impossible," Wang Qingyue’s expression grew astonished as soon as she heard there might be someone nearby. She also glanced in the direction Wangcai was barking at.
It was a dense forest filled with shrubs and towering trees, limiting visibility significantly.
That area was utterly silent, not at all suggesting that anything was amiss.
"I don’t know for sure. It just seems like it detected someone," Chen Yang said, also scanning the bushes briefly.
Wang Hong didn’t take it seriously upon hearing this. Whether or not someone was there wasn’t a big deal—it wasn’t like they had enemies here.
So, he turned back to continue cooking.
Chen Yang patted Wangcai’s head, signaling it to stop barking and quiet down.
Wangcai, ever obedient and clever, immediately sat down and closed its mouth.
However, its eyes remained fixed on that same direction, unwavering.
This small detail didn’t escape Chen Yang’s attention, prompting him to stay alert and keep an eye on the area.
Should anything unexpected emerge from there, it would be critical to react promptly.
About four or five minutes later, to everyone’s surprise, noises came from the direction Wangcai had been watching. Something seemed to be approaching.
The commotion was loud enough for Wang Hong, Wang Qingyue, and the others to hear it clearly.
Everyone’s gaze immediately shifted toward that direction.
A minute later, a group of seven or eight people gradually came into view.
As soon as this group appeared, Chen Yang and Wang Qingyue immediately recognized them.
These people weren’t strangers—they were the Liu Family members they had encountered on the day they entered the mountain.
No one had expected to run into them again here.
"Liu Qianshan."
Wang Qingyue blurted out unconsciously.
Initially, Wang Hong hadn’t recognized who they were, but upon hearing Wang Qingyue mention it, he finally realized.
"The Liu Family? Why are they here too?"
If this had been deep within the mountains and they had run into them, Wang Hong wouldn’t have found it strange. But now, this was the way leading out of the mountain.
Meeting them here was peculiar. Could it be that they had been following them all along?
The thought made Wang Hong frown deeply.
"Haha, what a coincidence! Didn’t expect to run into Miss Wang and Brother Wang Hong here." Just as Wang Hong began suspecting the Liu Family of tracking them, Liu Qianshan walked out of the trees laughing heartily.
Liu Qianshan was young, 24 or 25 years old, with an average appearance but a tall and sturdy figure. He clearly belonged to the ’don’t mess with me’ type.
Seeing Liu Qianshan step forward, Wang Hong also took a step forward.
"Indeed, quite the coincidence! Didn’t expect to meet you here on the way back. Are you also leaving the mountains?" Wang Hong tested the waters, smiling faintly.
Upon hearing Wang Hong’s words, Liu Qianshan’s expression instantly showed surprise.
"Heading back? Brother Wang Hong, you mean you’ve come out from the deeper areas and are planning to leave?" Liu Qianshan asked, clearly taken aback.
Seeing Liu Qianshan’s surprised look, Wang Hong chuckled.
It seemed he had overthought things. Running into the Liu Family here wasn’t because they were being followed; it was truly just happenstance.
"Yes, there’s a sudden family matter that requires my attention, so I have to leave," Wang Hong replied with a smile.
"Oh, I see. Then I won’t keep you, Brother Wang Hong. Farewell!"
Liu Qianshan, seeing an opponent leave, was naturally pleased. Not wanting to linger, he immediately led his men away.
Watching Liu Qianshan and his group leave, Wang Hong smiled contentedly.
He had initially feared trouble was brewing, but Liu Qianshan’s straightforward departure eased his concerns.
As Liu Qianshan’s group disappeared from their view, Wang Hong didn’t dwell on it further and continued preparing their meal.
Chen Yang returned to his seat and laughed, praising Wangcai.
"Impressive! Your nose truly is sharp, detecting people from afar."
Chen Yang laughed as he patted Wangcai.
Wangcai, perhaps sensing the praise, lifted the corners of its mouth in a proud expression. Sitting there, it raised its neck high, looking incredibly smug.
This reaction made Chen Yang laugh helplessly.
He thought to himself, "Are all smart animals like this? Full of airs when praised?"
Chen Yang shook his head, still amused, and said nothing more. He stayed seated, awaiting the meal. Once they finished eating, they’d have to hurry onward, aiming to leave the mountains before nightfall and reach Liuhe Village. After lunch, they’d need to press on urgently; otherwise, they definitely wouldn’t make it.
With everyone back to their usual tasks, life returned to normal.
But the recently departed Liu Qianshan and his group found themselves increasingly uneasy as they walked away.
Liu Qianshan had initially been happy, thinking that Wang Hong’s departure increased their chances of finding the treasured herb.
But one of his subordinates raised a troubling thought that wiped the smile off his face.
"Young Master, I think something’s fishy. The Wang Family is searching for the herb to treat Old Master Wang’s illness. How could they leave so easily?"
"I suspect they must have already found the herb, which is why they’re in such a rush to leave!"
Upon hearing this, Liu Qianshan abruptly stopped walking.
He stood there, silently contemplating for two or three minutes, before suddenly turning back. "You’ve made a good point! Quickly, let’s go back and intercept them!"
With that, Liu Qianshan led his men and hurriedly retraced their steps.
Meanwhile, Wang Hong and Chen Yang, still cooking, hadn’t given a second thought to the possibility that Liu Qianshan’s group might return.
So, when Wang Hong saw Liu Qianshan’s group storming back with a fierce demeanor, he looked completely surprised, utterly clueless as to what was going on.
"Liu Qianshan, why are you back? Changed your mind about searching for the herb?" Wang Hong cheerfully made the first move, smiling as he questioned them.
Seeing the smile on Wang Hong’s face, Liu Qianshan immediately felt more certain about his suspicions.
Wang Hong must have found the treasure herb! That smile—he was clearly mocking them! Treating them like fools!
