Chapter 244: 213 Encounter, exchange pleasantries (2 updates)_1

After Lu Han and the other two left, Sun Qing also received a call from her grandfather. Sun Qing knew that her family of four had come to Beijing to welcome Tang Su’s grandmother. They had important things to do, and so she didn’t invite Tang Su to her home to play.

"Uncle, Aunt, Tangtang, Big Brother, my grandfather has also arrived, so I’m heading to the parking lot first. When you’re almost done with your things, come over to our place to play," Sun Qing said, pushing her small suitcase and waving goodbye to them.

"Sure, take it slow on the road, and give our regards to your grandfather."

"Okay, bye."

After Sun Qing left, it was half an hour later when they finally got their checked luggage.

Su Wanyi, with her younger daughter Shen Yi, came to pick them up at the airport. After waiting in the parking lot for a while and not seeing them, the mother and daughter both had slight complaints.

Shen Yi was already reluctant to come, considering she was the only one among the Shen Family’s three sisters who was not yet married. Her eldest and second sisters could excuse themselves by being busy at home, attending only the evening dinner.

She, however, had no such luck. Her brother, Shen Yifei, was particularly doted on at home. With her grandmother favoring males over females, she was compelled for the sake of the Shen Family’s reputation to come with her mother.

Su Wanyi had married into a wealthy family, but the title of Mrs. Shen wasn’t easy to bear. In order to have a son, she gave birth to three daughters until she finally had Shen Yifei, her wished-for son.

Otherwise, she feared she would have had to continue trying.

If she hadn’t borne a son, her status as Mrs. Shen would have been at risk.

After the birth of Shen Yifei, her health significantly deteriorated, and she could no longer have children. Fortunately, the last one was a son, and over the years, maintaining her body, which had been ravaged by childbirth, had cost her plenty.

Otherwise, at her age, she would have already lost her beauty, and it would have been bad enough for her husband to cheat; but, if he had brought a mistress home and forced her to give up her position, her life would have truly become a joke.

The thought was sour in her heart.

But she could only swallow her pride and endure; after all, she had chosen this path in life. Unlike her younger sister Su Ruoan, who ended up with a decent man, but the quality of her life, well, it was every bit too low for her.

If it were her, she would only fly first class, never needing to stay up late to snatch up some super-cheap economy deal. First class was her baseline; if she pleased, she would join the circle of wealthy wives on a private jet for a trip.

Finally, after forty minutes, the mother and daughter saw the Shen Family’s driver bringing Tang Su’s family of four.

"Fengfeng really is a child of our Su Family, he has the bearing of your grandfather from back in the day," Su Wanyi spotted the tall and handsome Tang Feng immediately, who did indeed bear some resemblance to her father in his youth.

Su Wanyi’s personal trip to the airport had little to do with her sister and brother-in-law’s regard, but was solely for her nephew, Tang Feng’s face.

Back then, when the kid was born, she was envious of Su Ruoan for having such good fortune; her very first child was a son.

If she had had a son on her first try, she would probably have stopped at just two, and now she wouldn’t have to exhaust herself preserving her body and looks, all for the hope that her husband would deign to come home after work.

"Pfft—" Shen Yi glanced over, totally unimpressed, "Around here, guys like him are a dime a dozen, okay?"

"If they’re a dime a dozen, how come you haven’t brought one home for me? You’re all talk. Tang Su already has a boyfriend; you are the same age, and she’s even two months younger than you."

"He’s just the son of Haicheng’s mayor, not Hua City’s. I really don’t understand what they’re thinking. My third aunt and uncle have even opened a store for Tang Su in Hua City, clearly intending to settle there rather than going to Haicheng."

Shen Yi said dismissively. About this matter, her third uncle bragged about it to them during a New Year’s meal as something great.

She really didn’t see what there was to brag about. They didn’t have much money, and as for power, the scope of that Haicheng mayor’s reach didn’t extend to Hua City. Were they planning to send Tang Su off to a distant marriage?

Hadn’t her third aunt always said that she didn’t want her precious daughter to marry far away?

If they weren’t going to Haicheng and both were to stay in Hua City, then the man’s resources, with mountains high and the emperor far away, wouldn’t be of much help, would they?

"Alright, alright, quite capable, aren’t you? Later, in front of their whole family, try to speak less, alright? Anyway, Tang Su has a man that wants her, but you, you don’t."

"Ha, if I want to find a man, that’s easy. The key issue is, can you accept that?"

"Fine, fine, I can’t argue with you. Just shut up. Your grandma said, remember, don’t lose the poise of the third young lady of the Shen Family." Su Wanyi reminded.

Shen Yi pouted, and at last, the moment the car door opened, Shen Yi greeted Lu Han’s family of four with a beaming smile, "Auntie, Uncle, I haven’t seen you all in so long, I’ve missed you."

"Xiaoyi has such a sweet mouth indeed," said Su Ruoan and Tang Shengyi in unison.

"Xiaoyi, that’s your cousin Fengfeng, and your cousin Su Su."

"Cousin Fengfeng, cousin Su Su, I haven’t seen you in a long time either," obediently greeted Shen Yi.

"Hello, cousin."

"Hello, cousin."

Tang Su and Tang Feng spoke one after the other.

"Auntie, you look younger and more beautiful than ever." Tang Su was the owner of two stores and had known how to say nice things since she was little.

As for Tang Feng, just a plain "Auntie," and he said no more.

"Our Su Su really knows how to speak. I bet the bookstore and the coffee shop must be doing great business, right? How much do you make in a month?" Su Wanyi asked with a smile.

In December in Beijing, it’s quite cold outside the car, but with the heating on inside, it’s more comfortable to chat only after you get in.

"Not much, just enough to cover expenses," Tang Su replied.

"How much is enough? Look at this handbag I bought the day before yesterday, thirty thousand yuan," bragged Shen Yi, showing off the new handbag she had recently acquired.

"Then in a month, definitely not enough to buy this handbag," she said.

"My heavens, and you still say it’s enough for expenses? Don’t you have two stores?" Shen Yi covered her mouth, her face a picture of disbelief.

She had always known her aunt’s family was living rather modestly, but it was hard to imagine they were actually living that modestly.

She rarely interacted with them anyway. Before her grandmother went abroad, she would invite them to Beijing for the New Year, but after that, once her grandmother left the country to stay with her uncle, since they couldn’t all get together, she stopped inviting them.

This time, had her grandmother not mentioned wanting to take a family portrait, they wouldn’t have met with such poor relatives.

Absolutely no ambition.

"Cousin, my two shops are just small operations, nothing compared to the large enterprises of my uncle’s," Tang Su replied with a smile.

"Hey, why don’t you stay in Beijing and work for my dad’s company?" Shen Yi pityingly suggested to Tang Su in passing.

The reason she dared to suggest this was that she knew her aunt and uncle had a lot of pride despite being poor and wouldn’t accept charity.

As expected, Tang Su declined.

"Thank you, cousin, but I’m very satisfied with my current life," she replied.

"Alright then, as long as you’re happy," Shen Yi stopped speaking. She looked at Su Wanyi, seeking confirmation with her eyes, asking if her mother was satisfied with how she, the third young lady of the Shen family, had carried herself.
