Chapter 97: Chapter 97 Building a Reservoir_1
Thinking of how Brother Ye reacted last time and how he’d been avoiding her these past few days, Nan Feng shook her head bitterly. "Uncle Mo, stop teasing me. Brother Ye and I are just good friends. We hunt together, farm together, and sell our game together in town. That’s all."
For some reason, Mo Wenxuan became agitated. Hunt together, farm together, sell game together in town. Wasn’t that enough? It was clear that they were already very close.
The village chief asked again, "Don’t you want to marry Brother Ye?"
This time, Mo Wenxuan found himself unconsciously staring at Nan Feng, seeming eager to hear her answer.
Nan Feng coughed awkwardly a couple of times. "Uncle Mo, let’s drop this topic. I can handle my affairs."
She turned her head away after speaking.
Strange. It always seemed like a short journey when she walked back with Brother Ye, but now, walking back with the village chief felt unusually long.
Seeing that Nan Feng wanted to change the subject, the village chief didn’t force the issue. He turned his attention to the water pipe problem. "Fine, let’s leave that aside. Tell me, how did you come to think of using bamboo to channel water?"
Nan Feng said, "Well... I just thought that carrying water was too much work. We brainstormed a bit with Brother Ye, and then thought about channeling water using bamboo pipes."
The village chief stroked his small goatee. "Good job, both of you. I’m facing a problem now though. I don’t suppose you can help me find a solution?"
Nan Feng quickly responded modestly, "Uncle Mo, you overestimate my abilities. You’re the chief of the village. How could I possibly solve the problems you face?"
The village chief looked at Nan Feng, unable to stop himself from laughing. "You certainly know how to let me down gently. I’ll tell you what the problem is. It’s about water. The town council has been pushing me to solve the problem of irrigating the paddy fields quickly for a while now, but even after racking my brain for half a year I’ve made no progress. I was hoping you might have some ideas."
Nan Feng knew a thing or two about the water situation in the fields.
Da Ping village was tucked at the foot of the mountain. Behind the village lay mountains, in front a river. Rain was plentiful year-round, but there was never enough water when needed, particularly during sowing season.
Everyone who has grown rice knows that the fields need to be irrigated heavily during sowing season. Lack of water would mean the fields were barren despite their fertility.
The village’s paddy fields were centrally located, with a small stream running by them. The stream had a steady flow throughout the year, but during sowing season, it was insufficient, and the rest of the year, the water seemed wasted as it could not be controlled or regulated.
Nan Feng thought of Sunset Lake located in the mountain and asked the village chief, "Could we convert Sunset Lake into a reservoir? We could store water in it and release it during the sowing season."
"A reservoir?" The village chief looked at Nan Feng for a few seconds before he couldn’t help but chuckle. "Nan Feng, you sure are clever. I did think of a reservoir plan a while ago. But it took me several months to think of using Sunset Lake. You thought of it so quickly. You really are talented. Regardless of what you’re busy with, take some time to help me solve this water problem. By next spring, we would have water for sowing."
"...." Nan Feng said weakly, "Uncle Mo, aren’t you being a bit hasty? I suggested building a reservoir, but I don’t know the first thing about building one."
