Chapter 93: Chapter 93: What Did It Eat After All_1
Nan Feng threw the vine from her hand in defeat and sighed heavily: "This is our only option now."
Nan Quanyou, attempting to cheer her up, said: "Our Fengfeng was a beauty even as a child. Once the pustule on your face clears up, you might even surpass your mother in beauty."
Nan Feng asked, "Was mother really beautiful when she was young?"
"Absolutely. Your mother was the well-known beauty of Qingshui Town in her prime. I met her during a folk song competition. There were many men drawn to her, but she chose me. However..."
Nan Feng knew that Nan Quanyou was once again crippled with guilt for failing to give his wife and daughter a better life.
Nan Feng reversed the roles to comfort Nan Quanyou: "Father, you loved my mother so much, she would certainly understand your hardships from beyond. Besides, you two loved each other dearly when she was alive, she wouldn’t blame you."
Nan Quanyou just shook his head, then nodded.
...
The next day, bright and early, Nan Feng went to the mountains again. After hearing Nan Quanyou’s words, she increased the radius around the red fruit tree and collected some of each plant found within.
Having been there before, she was able to return relatively early.
She took out the newly gathered plants and fed them to the bamboo rats in turn. However, something seemed off.
The bamboo rats were somewhat agitated because of the pustules, but the third one was strangely calm. She picked it up and found that its pustules had actually stopped secreting pus.
This couldn’t be right. That morning, all three bamboo rats were in the same state and couldn’t have recovered so quickly, could they?
Nan Feng called out to Nan Quanyou in their house, "Father, did you feed anything special to this bamboo rat?"
Nan Quanyou yelled back from inside, "I haven’t fed it anything but plain porridge. Why?"
Nan Feng responded, "This bamboo rat’s pustule has healed!"
"Really?" Nan Quanyou did not dare to believe it. He hurriedly put down his work and went out. Taking the bamboo rat from Nan Feng and looking it over, he saw the pustule had indeed subsided, sparking a sudden realization. "Could it be...?"
"What could it be?"
Nan Quanyou explained: "This morning when you left, one bamboo rat escaped from its cage. I managed to capture it and put it back. It might have eaten something while it was free."
"Father, do you know what it ate?"
"I have no idea," Nan Quanyou said.
"Where did you recapture it?" Nan Feng asked.
Nan Quanyou pointed to a pile of wilted plants leftover from the previous day, "Right there, that bamboo rat was playing around it when I caught it."
That pile consisted of the herbs tested by Nan Feng. By now, they had wilted after being left out for several days, and Nan Feng planned to dry them to use as firewood.
She quickly set the fresh bundles of plants aside and carefully sifted through the old pile of herbs.
She first eliminated the ones she had fed in the previous two days, leaving only those fed yesterday.
She had fed the third bamboo rat a vine with tiny yellow flowers. She took that out and fed it to the other two rats.
But when night fell, the pustules on the other rats showed no signs of improvement. Instead, the third rat’s condition was seen improving.
This confirmed that the vine was useless!
But why did the third bamboo rat recover then? Nan Feng was puzzled.
If she could figure out what the third rat had eaten, she could treat the pustule on her face and become beautiful again.
But Nan Feng didn’t give in. She sifted through the pile of plants again to see if the bamboo rat might have left anything untouched.
Couldn’t be, the rat ate everything.
She slumped on the ground in despair.
Nan Quanyou was equally anxious. Then he suddenly said: "What about the leaves of the red fruit tree? We tried everything else but not the leaves. Maybe the bamboo rat ate those leaves!"
Leaves?
