Chapter 819: Chapter 819: The Emperor’s Confession (1)
Long San’s carriage, heading to the Governor Mansion, had to pass through that snack street, and Long San, sitting inside, could never have imagined that he would brush past Nan Feng.
Nan Feng also didn’t realize that Long San had passed behind her, as she was at that moment serving the Emperor beef offal.
The Emperor had eaten so much beef offal that he felt stuffed and broke out in a sweat, which gave him another reason to spend time with Nan Feng, "I’m too full, let’s take a walk."
"Yes, Your Majesty," Nan Feng then followed the Emperor, strolling around the city.
Since it was a southern tour, they couldn’t just eat and drink all the time, they also needed to be aware of the people’s plight, so Nan Feng suggested that the Emperor visit the place where they used to shelter refugees.
The place was not in the bustling area of the Provincial City, and it took quite a while to get there, so Mao Zhen found another carriage.
"I’ve heard that you donated silver to the refugees before," the Emperor said as he looked at Nan Feng.
This carriage was found on short notice; it was quite narrow inside, and with red lanterns lit inside, the atmosphere seemed rather intimate.
"I didn’t donate much, just did what I could," Nan Feng replied indifferently.
The Emperor smiled, "But it is truly rare, you are a very kind woman."
He used "woman," not "girl."
Nan Feng always felt that sounded a bit strange.
"Your Majesty is too kind," Nan Feng finished speaking, then turned in a different direction and opened the carriage curtain to look outside.
But there were alleys on both sides, some residences lit with lanterns outside, some not; this was not a bustling area, nor were there many pedestrians, so there was not much to see, but Nan Feng did not want to turn back and interact with the Emperor.
For some reason, she always felt that the Emperor was a bit unusual tonight.
The two of them had always maintained a lukewarm relationship; he was the sovereign, she was the subject, and they had always constrained each other with this dynamic.
"Nan Feng, are you afraid of me?" the Emperor asked again, not caring whether she was looking at the scenery or not; after all, she could always hear his voice.
Nan Feng had to close the window curtain and then turned back to look at the Emperor, "Why would you say that, Your Majesty? You are the Son of Heaven, and it’s natural for the people to feel reverence towards the Son of Heaven, just like... revering the Deities."
But the Emperor paused, then asked, "What if I were just a common man?"
Nan Feng thought to herself that if he were just a common man, they would not be sitting together in the same carriage right now, and she would leave in a minute.
"Your Majesty, such a supposition doesn’t exist; an Emperor is an Emperor and mustn’t lower his status."
But the Emperor still pressed on, "But what if I am just a common man?"
"..." Nan Feng chose not to reply.
"You still bear a grudge against the hunting event last time, do you not? Because I did not punish the virtuous consort," the Emperor asked.
"Not at all," Nan Feng had barely finished speaking when she inopportunely sneezed and then wiped her nose with her sleeve.
"Look, you say no, but you sneezed. They say sneezing means you’re cursing someone in your heart; the person you’re cursing is me, right?"
Isn’t sneezing supposed to mean someone else is cursing you?
Nan Feng looked at the Emperor’s face; he didn’t seem to be joking, looking quite serious.
"Your Majesty, the virtuous consort is your consort; if you choose not to punish, then it is your decision."
"So, you do blame me in your heart," the Emperor said.
Nan Feng felt the conversation seemed to be going in circles again, "We’re almost at the refugee residence; let’s prepare to get off."
