Chapter 785: Chapter 785 Competition with the Emperor_1
The deer’s eyes were full of terror.
Nan Feng suddenly felt a pang of sympathy, thinking that perhaps it would be best to spare the deer altogether.
Gao De, who was not far away, noticed that Nan Feng had abruptly stopped, he believed that an opportunity had presented itself - this was his moment!
Without a second thought, Gao De released his arrow.
Nan Feng, while hunting, was always highly focused. Even though she intended to let the deer go, she remained alert. First, because there were so many people hunting in the forest - someone could accidentally shoot her. Second, there were a number of animals in the area, and even if the deer escaped, she needed to be on the lookout for potentially aggressive animals like boars.
So, when the whirring sound of an arrow flew past her ear, she naturally dodged it.
It was a particularly powerful arrow, the shooter was clearly intent on killing either her, or someone else. When she dodged the arrow, it drove itself deep into the trunk of a nearby tree, almost half of it buried into the bark.
"Who goes there!" Nan Feng shouted.
Gao De was taken aback to see that Nan Feng had actually dodged his arrow. Could this woman possibly know kung fu? How else could she have evaded his arrow?
Gao De immediately pulled out another arrow, preparing to take aim at Nan Feng again, but just at that moment, a voice came from not far away: "It’s me!"
A man emerged from within the forest, it was the Emperor.
Nan Feng looked at the Emperor in confusion.
He had come from the direction of the fired arrow.
Could it have been him?
Nan Feng pointed to the embedded arrow in the tree, then coldly addressed the Emperor, "Your Majesty, were you trying to kill me?"
The Emperor was taken aback, "Lady Nan Feng, why would you say such a thing?"
"Your Majesty, see for yourself," Nan Feng retorted.
Following Nan Feng’s pointing finger, the Emperor saw the half-buried arrow in the tree. He couldn’t help but respond, "But it’s not my arrow, all of my arrows are still with me."
Nan Feng closely examined the Emperor’s arrows, they had a distinct marking, indeed they were not his. So whose could it be?
The Emperor turned around, thoroughly inspecting the surrounding area, then called out, "Imperial Guard, heed my command!"
Despite his loud voice, no one responded.
The Emperor furrowed his brow deeply.
It didn’t matter if they didn’t come out, he could always investigate who was assigned to this area.
The Emperor looked at Nan Feng, despite his serious expression, he seemed very sincere, "I vow to you, I never intended to harm you, not now, not ever, let alone take your life."
Nan Feng looked into the Emperor’s eyes. Why would an Emperor need to stake such a pledge? He was noticeably lowering his stature in front of her.
"As long as it wasn’t intentional, it may just have been a stray arrow. Nan Feng will not hold a grudge," Nan Feng responded casually.
Even if she wanted to take action, there was nothing she could do.
She would need to be careful in the future.
The Emperor seemingly changed the subject, "So, how has today’s hunting gone so far?"
"It’s been okay!" Nan Feng responded.
"We still have two more hours, why don’t we engage in a friendly competition to see who can hunt more game," the Emperor suggested with a light smile.
In reality, he just wanted to assert his presence in front of Nan Feng.
And perhaps, keep her safe in the process.
Nan Feng replied with a smile, "But Your Majesty, you are not allowed to go easy on me."
"I won’t, we will not yield to each other."
"Then it’s settled, let’s start now."
...
Both of them were on foot and followed the same route. Whenever they saw game, they shot arrows simultaneously.
Yet, as Nan Feng was well experienced in hunting, she was quick in sensing the presence of game. Because her hunting equipment reacted slower, by the time the Emperor had his arrow ready, Nan Feng had already shot several arrows away.
By the time the Emperor realized that trailing behind Nan Feng put him at a clear disadvantage, it was too late to back out.
