Chapter 696: Chapter 696: Can You Fight? (2)_1

"The commoner woman knows a little because she is from the countryside," Nanfeng responded, still unsure about the Emperor’s true intentions.

He’s already 22 years old, and he spent many years in the palace, so his machinations must be pretty deep.

"Choose between farming and doing business; what would you select?" the Emperor asked again.

Nanfeng was cautious, "Why does your Majesty ask such a query?"

"Just answer," the Emperor stated.

He was truly domineering.

"If I had to select, I would prefer agriculture," Nanfeng replied, she vaguely guessed that the Emperor was planning her future.

Her future after her brother Ye goes to war.

If Ye went to the north, she would also live in the north temporarily, as they had agreed, waiting for him at the closest place.

"Good, now I know," the Emperor surprisingly stopped the conversation.

Nanfeng took her leave: "Your Majesty, I need to go out to buy lunch. We have but a single food tray at home and cannot accommodate enough for all. My kitchen has a stove, if you want to eat something cooked by yourself, your subordinates can cook it. If you want to have something from outside, your guards can fetch it. I apologize, as a commoner, I have no strength to serve your Majesty."

Nanfeng, coming from modern times, adheres to the principle of equality for all. Having fulfilled her duty and provided accommodations, she saw no need to further entertain the Emperor.

If it were Longsan and Xueling visiting, Nanfeng wouldn’t mind cooking, but this Emperor is from the palace and must be very picky about food, so Nanfeng didn’t want to bother with all that.

The Emperor’s face seemed a touch displeased, but he still smiled and indicated that it didn’t matter.

For Ye, he didn’t care about such things.

...

When Nanfeng returned with the food tray, she saw smoke billowing from her stove at home, quite a hefty cloud.

Nanfeng rushed over, only to see Mao Zhen squatting on the ground trying to light the firewood. Despite adding plenty of fuel, the fire hardly caught, and he kept blowing hard on it.

Being from the Imperial Guard, Mao Zhen, naturally, had no idea how to make a fire. But the Emperor wanted him to cook, stating his dislike for the taste of takeaway food, which is too heavy on MSG. So he asked Mao Zhen to cook.

Seeing Nanfeng entering, Mao Zhen, seeming to have found a savior, asked: "Lady Nangong, can you... give me a hand? I can’t get this fire going, no idea what’s wrong?"

Nanfeng, somewhat helplessly, responded, "You haven’t even cleaned out the ash from the stove, how will the fire catch?"

"We need to clear out the ash?"

"Not only the ash, the charcoal from the last burn needs to be cleaned out too," Nanfeng explained.

As Mao Zhen hurriedly cleared out the charcoal and ash, he used excessive force and caused a smoky mess in the kitchen. Helpless, Nanfeng said, "Let me handle it."

She placed down the food tray and started to help Mao Zhen with the firewood. When she finally got the fire going, she noticed Mao Zhen chopping a chicken with a cleaver. Chopping was certainly the word, and it made Nanfeng think of dismembering a body.

Helplessly Nanfeng went over and assisted Mao Zhen chop the chicken.

Mao Zhen obviously didn’t know how to cook.

Being the type who’d help someone through and through, Nanfeng asked some XXX to tend the fire while she inspected the chicken: "What do you plan on making?"

"His Majesty wants to eat chicken stewed in soybeans," Mao Zhen replied.

"Then you better observe how I cook, learn some. I’m only helping you prepare this meal. If you’re still here for dinner, I’m not helping," Nanfeng stated.

With the vegetables that Mao Zhen brought from outside, Nanfeng peeled a piece of ginger to fry in the pot, then chopped up the chicken, fried it until its oil was released, caramelised the chicken with sugar until it was golden, and added it to the pot with the soybeans to stew.
