Chapter 611: Chapter 612: Weakness_1

Xiaoqing pushed open the door and saw Nan Feng lying "weakly" on the ground, holding a cup.

"Sister Nan Feng, what’s wrong with you?" Xiaoqing rushed in to help Nan Feng.

Nan Feng acted quickly out of desperation; she threw the cup and hastily hid the Mung Bean Cake. Then, she lay down again. By the time Xiaoqing helped her up, she weakly said, "Water, I want water."

All those TV dramas she watched in her spare time in the past proved to be quite useful.

"Sister Nan Feng, if you want some water, you can just tell me. You don’t need to get up yourself," Xiaoqing said, then lifted Nan Feng back onto the bed.

But outside the room, the whole scene had been clearly seen by Chairman Wan Hui.

...

The Governor’s Mansion gate.

It was time to submit the list. Chairman Wan Hui stood respectfully at the gate, waiting for the guard to invite him in.

About a quarter of an hour later, someone came to call him, "Chairman Wan, right? The governor has asked for you."

It was already dark. The governor had instructed that he should only be sought after dark, as the governor had other official duties during the day, and the dealings with the Business Association were just incidental.

Chairman Wan Hui was savvy; he could certainly guess that the governor’s interest in the Business Association was undoubtedly driven by money.

In Chairman Wan Hui’s view, all officials were corrupt. Why else would they endure years of hard study to gain a position? Out of genuine interest in serving the people and the court? He scoffed at the thought.

These ministers, they looked down on merchants while trying to take advantage of them. They thought merchants were fools, but everyone knew what they were up to; they simply chose not to expose them.

Hence, such was the situation of officials colluding with merchants.

However, Chairman Wan knew his place. In ancient times, merchants, no matter how wealthy, were still exploited. But since the governor was willing to give him an opportunity to make money, he was happy to serve him.

Especially Minister Qin.

The guard led Chairman Wan through the courtyard to a side hall where the governor and Qin Kun were leisurely sipping tea and playing chess.

Chairman Wan immediately went forth to pay his respect, "Greetings to the governor and Minister Qin."

The governor and Qin Kun then paused their tea-drinking. One looked at Chairman Wan, "Ah, you’re punctual. You’ve arrived just as we discussed."

"I wouldn’t dare to be negligent in matters that the governor and Minister Qin have ordered," Chairman Wan remained kneeling.

Minister Qin then bid him rise and gifted him a seat. After Chairman Wan was seated, he respectfully handed the book in his hand to the mansion’s butler, who then passed it to the governor.

The governor flipped through the book and gave it to Qin Kun, "Minister Qin, please see if you’re satisfied."

While browsing the book, Qin Kun let out his usual hearty laugh, "Since the governor has asked me to take a look, I will. I don’t have anything else to do anyway."

What a cover-up, Chairman Wan thought. It’s obvious he’s the one behind all of this, and yet he insists that it’s the governor who asked him to check.

Qin Kun opened the book and looked for a while, "This Shi Yu, he is the one who manages medicinal materials and health products, right?"

Chairman Wan replied, "Yes! As soon as I brought it up, he agreed. So the Business Association leader in the pharmaceutical sector will be him."

"Hmm, I’ve met this person before. He seems to be a decent, honest man... and this Ma Yiyun, will he be the chairman in charge of textiles and clothing?"

"Yes, he hesitated at first, but then he came to see me. He believes this is a rare opportunity. He asked me to convey his gratitude to Minister Qin when he gets the chance."
