Chapter 526: Chapter 528: Nan Feng is taken to trial_1
That’s when Xiaoqing discreetly slipped away.
When Nan Feng was taken away, a considerable number of victims had already gathered outside. That group of victims relentlessly hurled abuse and followed closely behind her. Had it not been for the officers maintaining order, Nan Feng might have been bombarded with foul eggs and stones.
Nan Feng knew in her heart it wasn’t her fault, absolutely not. Therefore, she held her head high.
Someone had set her up.
Wan Fengzhen?
Mrs. Zhi?
Or could it be some of her competitors?
...
The Inspection Mansion was an organization solely responsible for investigating various lawsuits and criminal cases within Provincial City.
Due to the large number of people who came forth to accuse Nan Feng, some of whom were local noblewomen, the incident at Spikenard Square had become a significant private criminal case.
This was the second time Nan Feng had come here. The first time she came to find Ye Ge, while this time, she was brought in by officers.
Upon her arrival, an officer led her directly into the court room. The official responsible for adjudicating the case was Song Cheng, with Wu Yang standing at his side.
Song Cheng wore a stern and resolute expression, while Wu Yang, usually playful and jovial, wore an equally grave countenance, his face utterly devoid of any emotion.
However, Nan Feng felt somewhat relieved. With Song Cheng presiding over the court, those women wouldn’t dare lay a finger on her, and the truth could hopefully be clarified.
"Who is standing before this court?" Song Cheng asked.
Despite their acquaintanceship, Song Cheng was obliged to ask such questions to demonstrate impartiality.
"I am a commoner, Nan Feng."
"Do you know what you’re accused of?" Song Cheng asked.
"My lord, I own a beauty product store wherein I sell women’s skincare products. The store has been open for over a month, and till today we’ve had no issues. However, this morning, many customers complained to me about developing boils after using products from my store. I am baffled about this. My intention in opening this store was merely to earn money and ensure our products are up to standard. If I had deliberately caused this, then I would be shooting myself in the foot. I’m not that foolish. Someone must have set me up," Nan Feng postulated calmly.
"You say someone set you up. Did you personally test the products before selling them?" Song Cheng asked.
"I personally tested the first few batches and there were no issues. However, I did not test this batch because I thought it wasn’t necessary since there hadn’t been any problems before."
The ladies who had first filed the complaints against Nan Feng were kneeling by her side. They all began to speak out one after the other, "She does not even test her own products before selling them; she doesn’t take her business seriously at all!"
"Sir, you must bring us justice. Our faces cannot continue to deteriorate like this. If it continues, we won’t be able to face anyone."
"Sir, start by giving her thirty hard floggings."
"..."
Nan Feng offered no excuses. Intelligent as she was, she understood why Song Cheng asked such questions. He was trying to make her realize her own mistake. Regardless of the truth, as the owner, she indeed failed to thoroughly check the products herself.
If she had tested it beforehand and knew that there was an issue with this batch, she wouldn’t have sold it at all.
In court, a single strike of Song Cheng’s gavel on the sounding board forced the complaining women into silence.
Then, Nan Feng saw Ye Ge arrive, standing alongside Song Cheng through the door at the back, presumably because someone had secretly informed him.
But he didn’t approach her and instead just watched Nan Feng.
If he had come forward, the group of women would have suspected that Nan Feng had powerful backers, which would just stir up further controversy. Therefore, he just reassured her with a look that he was unconcerned and that the truth would prevail.
"To the plaintiffs, are these two boxes on my desk part of your evidence?" Song Cheng questioned.
