Being a content woman, Lin Qiaoyun greatly treasured her present life, considering her past hardships and the fact that she had been married and had a child before. She was extremely kind to Nan Quanyou, always eager to help with household chores and keeping the house spotless. Lately, she had even started serving him his meals. So now, the two kids were having a blast with the fireworks and firecrackers in the yard, jumping and shouting in excitement. Despite the freezing weather, it did not feel cold at all.

When Lin Qiaoyun was cooking dinner, she saved a good amount of charcoal to heat all the rooms, just like in the city. Hence, when Nan Feng went back to the room to take a bath, she didn’t feel cold at all.

After the children had taken their baths, the mansion became a bit quieter. Nan Quanyou asked them to stop playing and sit quietly for the New Year’s Eve vigil. Nan Quanyou and Brother Fu started cracking melon seeds and eating peanuts, while Nan Feng noticed Lin Qiaoyun sewing a quilt. Upon closer look, she realised it was a bright red quilt with auspicious patterns and the character for double happiness sewn on it.

A sudden comprehension dawned on her, and she felt a lump in her throat. However, she quickly held back her emotions and asked with a smile, "Aunt Yún, who is this quilt for?"

"It’s for you. You’re getting married soon, and this quilt needs to be brought over from the bride’s home. So, I decided to prepare it in advance for you."

Nan Quanyou chimed in from one side, "Your Aunt Yún has been sewing for quite some time now. Since the engagement, she’s been sewing every day. This is already the second one, and she says she wants to sew nine quilts in total, to symbolise everlasting love."

Puzzled, Nan Feng asked, "Do we need that many?"

Nan Quanyou replied, "In our Da Ping village, we don’t need that many, but your Aunt Yún, being worldly-wise, says that young ladies in the city take nine quilts when they get married."

So, it seemed Lin Qiaoyun wanted her to get married in style, just like a young city-bred lady.
