Chapter 480: Chapter 482 Chickens Can Hurt Too _1
Upon hearing the commotion from inside the house, Lin Qiaoyun instantly knew that Fuku was causing trouble again. She hurried out to scold him, "Fuku, you scared the rooster away! What are we going to eat during the New Year?"
This chicken was supposed to be slaughtered for the ancestor’s worship later.
Smiling, Fuku said: "It won’t go far. I’ve observed that all the chickens in every household return to their coop in the evening. Our chickens are no exception."
Lin Qiaoyun turned to Nan Feng: "Nan Feng, this boy is becoming more mischievous by the day. Can you do something about him?"
To voice support for the rooster, Nan Feng decided to give Fuku a gentle tap on his head: "Chickens can feel pain too!"
Fuku retorted: "But doesn’t it hurt even more when you slaughter it?"
"..." Stumped by his words, Nan Feng had no choice but to persuade Lin Qiaoyun: "Aunt Yun, never mind. Let him have his fun."
As she finished speaking, she noticed Nan Quanyou busy with something in another room, carrying a sack of what seemed like hemp. She walked over and asked him, "Dad, what’s keeping you busy?"
"I’m packing a bag of rice for you to take back to the city for the New Year. This is the freshly harvested rice. The ones you buy in the city aren’t as fragrant as the ones we have here in our Da Ping village," Nan Quanyou said, with the worried look of a father fearing his daughter might go hungry.
Nan Feng was touched, "We still have a few days left, you’re preparing it now?"
"In case I forget later. When you leave, remind me again. I’m afraid I will forget amidst the New Year’s hustle and bustle," he finished, then added, "By the way, Aqiu’s wedding is fast approaching, it’s scheduled for the end of February. That’s an auspicious day. Why don’t you have your wedding with Ye Ge on the same day?"
This meant two pieces of news: one, Aqiu was getting married, and two, there was a good day at the end of February for Nan Feng to officially wed Ye Ge.
"Dad, I’ll ask Aqiu what the exact date in February is, that way I can..." Nan Feng became a bit bashful. Since Nan Quanyou was her father, she had to maintain some level of decorum, so as she ran out she exclaimed, "I’m getting married too!"
Nan Feng darted straight to Aqiu’s house.
On New Year’s Eve, every household was busy preparing for the ancestor worship and pasting couplets. Aqiu’s family was no exception. Uncle Lan was slaughtering a chicken, Aunt Lan was gutting a fish, and Aqiu and Achun were pasting the couplets at the front door.
Nan Feng had already delivered some New Year goods to their home after she returned to the village in the afternoon. Seeing her come by once again, Achun asked, "Sister Nan Feng, are you bringing us more food?"
Quick to hush him, Aqiu scolded: "Food again? All you think about is eating! You’ve eaten enough!"
Returning the ribbing to Aqiu, Achun shot back, "You’re not eating? You were the quickest at lunch!"
Achun’s persistent teasing annoyed Aqiu, so she took the hand carrying a dipper of paste made from cassava starch and dabbed at Achun, who quickly evaded her, "Ouch! A soon-to-be-married woman should not be so fierce. Careful not to get disliked by your in-laws!"
"You’re the one who’ll be disliked!" Aqiu chased after Achun to hit him.
Watching the sibling brawl stirred feelings of envy in Nan Feng.
Once Aqiu finally managed to straighten Achun out, she wiped her hands and came over to Nan Feng, "That boy really needs a beating! How come you aren’t busy at your house?"
Nan Feng laughed: "We already posted the couplets in the morning. My dad is slaughtering the chicken. After that, we’ll go and pay our respects to the ancestors. I rushed over when I heard you’re getting married. Who’s the lucky guy?"
A flush crept onto Aqiu’s face at the question, "You know him, he’s from our village, he used to..."
