Chapter 404: Chapter 405 He Came_1
"You’re inviting me to the quarterly meeting? Isn’t it for the top performers of each industry?" Nan Feng asked with a smile.
Wang Ju still bore that jovial expression: "Aren’t you now a top performer in your industry? In the past, the cosmetics industry would be represented by the four big squares, but now with Xiangying Square shut for investigation, the chairman has asked you to step in. To let you in on a secret, the Chairman highly praised you when you returned from the Yamen with him, saying you are like a young calf unafraid of a tiger, and destined for greatness."
It seems this old fox Chairman is also enjoying the show.
"I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy," Nan Feng flashed another smile at Wang Ju and then asked, "Has Xiangying Square really shut down for rectification?"
"Yes, but I reckon this is temporary," Wang Ju said meaningfully, "After all, Xiangying Square usually gives a lot of donations to the government. If they stay shut too long, well... you know, this is more or less a warning, but..."
"But what?" Nan Feng asked.
Wang Ju squinted at Nan Feng, "But, I think from now on Xiangying Square won’t dare to cross you again. Do you know what people in the Business Association are saying about you?"
"I’ve become the talk of the town? What are they saying about me?" Nan Feng amusingly asked.
Wang Ju drawled, "Don’t you know yet? That ledger of yours, the one that the government wouldn’t touch but you obtained. Although your fiance is on duty at the Yamen, a minor guard can’t stir up a storm, so everyone is guessing that you have a mysterious background. With you being so mysterious, who will dare to mess with you in the future?"
"..." With narrowed eyes, Nan Feng smiled knowingly.
...
In the courtyard.
The morning dew had not yet evaporated when Nan Feng came out with a small hoe to till the soil in a patch she had designated for potato planting in the backyard.
Though she’s now in business, she couldn’t abandon her gardening skills.
Upon seeing this, Aunt Pei, who came early to clean, asked, "Miss Nan, you’re as busy as a bee on usual days, how can you still have the heart to farm? Isn’t the price of vegetables nothing to you? If you want some, just ask Feng Gu to buy them."
Nan Feng smiled, "It’s no big deal. It doesn’t take too much time, you just till the soil and then bury the potatoes."
Seeing Nan Feng focused on tilling the soil, Aunt Pei stopped chatting leisurely and turned to sweep the floor, only to see Ye Ge at the front door.
Aunt Pei was about to greet Ye Ge, but he quickly stopped her with a gesture. Showing tact, Aunt Pei picked up her broom and headed towards the backyard.
Nan Feng continued to focus on planting potatoes.
It was early winter, a bit chilly, but because she was working, Nan Feng was lightly dressed—a plain linen skirt with a small shawl draped over it. She had rolled up her sleeves, and tiny beads of sweat were forming on her forehead.
Ye Ge was reminded of their days in Daping Village. Back then, she would always work hard like this. Most people performed their tasks grudgingly, eager to finish quickly and rest, but not her. She seemed to enjoy the process, treating the crops in the field like children she had cultivated carefully. She was meticulous in everything she did.
Hearing footsteps, Nan Feng assumed it was Aunt Pei again, so without raising her head, she said, "Aunt Pei, fetch half a bucket of water for me. I need to water the potatoes later."
It wasn’t until the bucket was placed next to her that Nan Feng realized something was off.
