Chapter 323: Chapter 324 What Did He Say Last Night (Double Update)_1

When she woke up, Nan Feng mistakenly thought she was still on a horse because she felt someone’s arm around her waist. She was about to respond and nuzzle against him when she suddenly realized something was off. The arm she expected to be strong and muscular was thin and soft instead.

It was Feng Gu.

He had brought her to Spikenard Square. After Nan Quanyou had gone back, she had been living alone in that room at the compound. Perhaps he sent her to Feng Gu because he was worried about her being on her own?

Last night was enchanting, and they had both drunk a little. Even if he had brought her back to his room, she would have been oblivious. But it turned out that he was a consummate gentleman, taking her to Spikenard Square instead.

What had he said last night?

Nan Feng couldn’t recall.

Gently detaching Feng Gu’s hand, Nan Feng got out of the bed first. After freshening up, she planned to get breakfast.

The shopkeeper of the neighboring clothing shop was just opening up her store. Upon seeing Nan Feng, she said enviously, "Manager Nan, your comeback is timely. The clerk from the yamen came while you were away."

"The clerk came? What for?"

"He said that the number of famine refugees from the north is increasing and government-granted food is running short, so he’s appealing to us shop owners for donations. I won’t give any. We small business owners barely scrape by, working from dawn to dusk. After we pay our store taxes each month, we have barely anything left. Now, they think we’re making a small profit and they want our money," the aggrieved clothing shopkeeper said: "I only donated two taels, not a penny more."

Stretching and yawning casually, Nan Feng then told the clothing shopkeeper, "I think this sort of thing depends on the individual’s willingness. Your family isn’t well-off either, with elderly parents and young children to care for. Two taels isn’t a small sum, it’s enough to buy two thousand steamed buns. So your contribution is quite significant."

Seeing Nan Feng’s understanding, the shopkeeper felt content. She asked Nan Feng again, "You weren’t here when the clerk came yesterday. Feng Gu said she couldn’t make decisions without you, but I assume the clerk will be back. How much do you plan to donate if he returns?"

Nan Feng gave it some thought, "Well, I can’t say for sure. I’m still not married, and dad has gone back to the countryside to farm. Just paying the rent for the house and shop is sufficient. If refugees genuinely need it and the money is used practically, I’ll certainly support it."

If it was anyone else, the shopkeeper might have thought dismissively, "Playing the saint," but their shops neighbor each other, meaning she had a fair understanding of Nan Feng’s character and knew that Nan Feng’s masks sold well. The shopkeeper then said, "Exactly, as long as it’s used practically, that’s what matters. I’m afraid those working in the yamen will use it on eating and drinking instead while the refugees still have to suffer from cold and hunger."

Nan Feng responded with a smile, "Well then, I’ll go get some steamed buns to fill my stomach."

...

Nan Feng had a hunch that the clerk would come but didn’t expect him to stop by the shop so soon after opening. There was a crowd of female customers outside the shop to buy facial masks, making it easy for Nan Feng to spot the male clerk among them.

She remembered seeing the clerk before when his brother had just moved to the city. She was observing a case being presided over in the yamen from outside the gate. The one in charge of the records then was this clerk, an approximately forty-year-old man, not tall, slender, with a somewhat pointed chin, carrying a notebook, a pen, and accompanied by a guard.

Fortunately, Feng Gu had become capable of handling things on her own, so Nan Feng left her to manage the shop while she stepped outside to welcome the clerk.
