Chapter 301: Chapter 302 Do You Like Aunt Yun? (Second Update)_1
Nan Quanyou shook his head, wanting to speak but not daring to. He hadn’t completely processed things himself. He was just a farmer who had been looked down upon by the villagers ever since he had become lame. Even the village widows sneered at him. But now, a beautiful widow from the city suddenly came to his doorstep and wanted to move back to the village with him. He found this to be utterly incomprehensible.
Nan Feng sat down, gazing at the cup Lin Qiaoyun had just used. In a calm tone, she asked Nan Quanyou, "Dad, Aunt Yun wants to be with you, right? Tell me the truth; do you like Aunt Yun?"
"Me? I am a widowed man. After your mother passed away, I had no plans to remarry. If I were to actually bring them back, your mother would never forgive me in the afterlife."
"No, my mother would definitely forgive you," Nan Feng began trying to enlighten Nan Quanyou with her modern thinking. "Dad, when my mom was alive, you cherished her greatly. That’s what everyone in the village told me. After she passed away, you got injured, but you still managed to raise me to adulthood at the best of your ability. Mom would barely have the time to express her gratitude, so how could she blame you?"
From Nan Feng’s tone, Nan Quanyou realized that she supported his union with Lin Qiaoyun. He was surprised by her way of thinking. Most children were afraid of their father taking on concubines or remarrying for fear of inheritance disputes. Yet, why was Nan Feng encouraging him to remarry?
All Nan Quanyou could say was, "Whether your mother blames me or not, I have indeed gotten used to being alone. Haven’t we, father and daughter, lived together for many years just like that?"
Nan Feng asked, "Have you ever thought about what will happen when I get married? Of course, after my marriage, I can bring you to live with me if you’re willing..."
Before Nan Feng could finish speaking, Nan Quanyou quickly said, "That’s out of the question! There has never been a scenario where a father follows his daughter after she gets married. Even if ’Ye Ge’ has no parents by his side, I wouldn’t live with you."
"Since you are unwilling to live with me, you would end up alone without anyone keeping you company. How can I rest easy then?" Nan Feng continued.
That was indeed a problem. It was traditional to raise a son for old age support. But as Nan Quanyou had no sons and his daughter was about to be married, he would be left alone and in a pitiful state.
Nan Feng said, "Dad, I think Aunt Yun is quite good. She’s hardworking, good-looking, and she also has a son, Fu Ge. Fu Ge sticks to you all the time and already treats you as his dad. She will marry you and also bring a son into the family. Who do you think is gaining more from this deal, she or you?"
Nan Quanyou remained silent.
Upon reflection, there was some truth to what Nan Feng said. Lin Qiaoyun was indeed quite attractive. She was far better-looking than the widows in the village, had fair skin and a good figure. Especially when she had just washed her hair, she looked utterly charming under the candlelight.
"Dad, when mom was alive, she was truly devoted to your well-being. If she knew in the afterlife that you are leading a lonesome existence in the second half of your life because of her, do you think she could rest in peace? By then, she wouldn’t blame you for remarrying. Instead, she would blame you for missing this opportunity. Besides, you have remained single for seven to eight years for her sake. You’ve already done very well."
Nan Quanyou fell silent again.
He knew how hard he had lived these past years. Earlier, the villagers had advised him to marry the widow next door who had lost a hand. The two, with his limp and her missing hand, would make a perfect pair. After marrying her, there would at least be someone around to cook, wash, and look after Nan Feng. But he had declined the offer on account of Nan Feng’s young age.
Now, Nan Feng had recovered from her illness, was making money, had a lover named ’Ye Ge’, and he felt lonely spending his days alone in this mixed courtyard. He wished for a companion, but his daughter was destined to venture out into the world. He couldn’t force Nan Feng to keep him company. It was Fu Ge’s daily visits that uplifted his spirits a bit.
If he were to truly return to Da Ping Village alone, he would at most engage in small talk with the villagers during the day. Once night fell, he would still be alone at home, isolated.
