Chapter 216: Chapter 217: Chatting while Eating_1
Nan Feng felt a little awkward. Was she that much of a country bumpkin that the owner could tell she was from the countryside at first glance?
Ye Ge spoke up, "We’ve been eating at the Yamen these days and haven’t had much of a chance to get out. Please prepare three or four small dishes for us, and bring a pot of plain rice. Oh, and a small pot of wine."
"All right, I will instruct the kitchen right away."
Once the boss left, the so-called private room quietened down.
Nan Feng asked Ye Ge, "Do you come here often?"
"Only once or twice," Ye Ge responded.
Nan Quanyou chimed in, "But the owner seemed quite familiar with you."
"Perhaps I’m easy to remember," said Ye Ge. "I come here to eat when I’m out on official duties, and meals at the Yamen run out."
Nan Quanyou asked again, "Oh, what do you do at the Yamen? Are you only in charge of protecting the safety of the county magistrate?"
"Yes, one task is to protect the county magistrate outside, the other is to arrest fugitives. I might also have to become the chief of the bailiffs soon, so I’ve been too busy to return to Da Ping village," Ye Ge said, giving Nan Feng a meaningful glance.
Was he explaining something? Nan Feng wondered.
"Isn’t that a promotion then?" Nan Quanyou asked.
"Being a chief bailiff doesn’t count as being an official. It’s more about managing the bailiffs’ tasks, like assigning shifts, arranging daily training and work schedules, and dividing job duties when out on official business," said Ye Ge elaborately but modestly, showing no sign of boasting.
However, Nan Quanyou sighed with admiration, "That’s impressive! Being a chief means you are going to meet more people."
The wine and dishes arrived. Ye Ge poured a cup of wine for Nan Quanyou, "Uncle Nan, have a drink."
"This..." Nan Quanyou looked at Nan Feng, "I’m afraid of getting drunk."
Nan Feng said, "Drinking a little won’t hurt. Plus, this pot of wine doesn’t even contain two taels. The three of us together won’t get drunk."
Ye Ge didn’t know Nan Feng also wanted to drink. Hearing this, he asked her, "Would you like to drink too?"
"I can hold my liquor pretty well," Nan Feng responded with a smile.
Ye Ge also gave a faint smile, then poured her a cup of wine.
They chatted while eating.
When asked about Nan Quanyou’s leg injury, Ye Ge immediately suggested, "If you need to change the bandage every day, I recommend you rent a room in the county. It would be more economical and I could help when I’m free."
Nan Feng said, "We’d like to, but we tried looking around this morning and found that it’s pretty hard to rent a place. The influx of refugees from the north has caused the rooms to be full."
"You don’t need to worry about that. Leave it to me. In half a month, you can just come to the Yamen, if I’m not there, I will arrange for someone trustworthy to guide you," said Ye Ge.
Nan Feng laughed, "That would be best. We don’t know how long it would take us to find a place if we tried."
Ye Ge went on, "I’ll rent a place closer to the Medical Hall for you. Are there any particular living conditions you prefer?"
Nan Feng shook her head and made a self-deprecating comment, "None at all. As long as it’s habitable, that’s fine. We countryfolk aren’t so picky."
Ye Ge cast a meaningful glance at Nan Feng.
While Nan Feng responded with a smile, she couldn’t help but feel a sting of bitterness within.
After laying everything open between them, they were essentially boyfriend and girlfriend now, right? Yet the reunion with her boyfriend, who she hadn’t seen in a month, had none of the warmth she expected.
Was it because Nan Quanyou was present, and Ye Ge was too embarrassed to show his feelings?
Or was it because she, compared to city girls, lacked refinement and Ye Ge found her unsightly?
Fortunately, the food at this restaurant was decent. Nan Feng decided to focus on her meal.
After eating a few bites, Ye Ge looked at Nan Feng, a subtle smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
