Chapter 1606: Chapter 1428: Epilogue
So, everyone pitched in to tidy up her house.
Having not returned for two years, some things had gone moldy, some possessions were nibbled by mice, and a thick layer of dust had accumulated on the bed. Some villagers helped sweep the dust, others helped move furniture outside to air it out, and some even helped wash the bedding.
Later, the conversation turned to Xia Dabao’s marital prospects. Everyone was asking whether, in the past two years abroad, she hadn’t met any boys she liked?
Xia Dabao just smiled and said, "The people I’ve met these past two years are either Divine Doctors or local villagers. The locals don’t take kindly to brides from elsewhere, so I figured I’d better come back and look for a husband."
Hearing Xia Dabao say this, Nan Feng also began to feel a headache about this issue.
Indeed, Xia Dabao was already seventeen, and any later she’d be considered an old maid. These past two years they’d taken her out to have fun and recuperate from excessive blood loss; she had reverted to the same carefree Xia Dabao without a thought for marriage.
Forget it, maybe entrust a Matchmaker to keep an eye out someday.
...
By the time everyone had finished cleaning up the house and the family lay in the familiar room, Xia Dabao heard someone outside calling her, "Dabao, Dabao?"
The voice sounded timid, but Xia Dabao recognized it immediately—it was indeed Axiang.
She hurried outside and saw Axiang carrying a basket of green vegetables in one hand and cradling a one-year-old baby in the other. Being summer, the baby was only wrapped in a small apron, hands and feet poking out, looking adorably plump and charming.
"Axian, the sun must be rising from the west for you to finally come visit us," Xia Dabao teased.
"Heard you were back and came to see you, brought a basket of veggies from the field while I was at it. Your vegetable field is overgrown with weeds," replied Axiang as she handed the basket to Xia Dabao.
Accepting the basket, Xia Dabao said, "Uncle Wang and Auntie Zhao just brought some vegetables too, enough to last for more than ten days. I don’t know if they’ll spoil if kept for too long."
If they spoil, just come over to my field and pick some more. There’s plenty for you," Axiang said with a smile.
Xia Dabao then started to play with Axiang’s son, "One year old now, right? Look, can he walk yet?"
"He can take a few steps but not very steadily. I thought you wouldn’t return to our village, and these past two years I’ve been constantly worried about you, and about Axian, especially since he was so ill when he left," Axiang’s eyes became moist as she spoke.
"Axian is doing well. Come in and sit for a while. I’ll get some Dim Sum for the little one, and you can take some back for your Shagen," said Xia Dabao.
"No need, no need, keep it for yourselves," replied Axiang, refusing to take it or come in. Xia Dabao insisted that Axian bring out the items, and only when Axiang saw Axian, who had grown even taller, did she feel reassured.
"How’s life with Shagen?" Xia Dabao asked again.
"Getting by. But he..." Axiang hesitated, looking quite bashful, "he’s very good to me. He doesn’t let me do much work in the fields anymore, saying he wants us to have another baby."
"That’s great, then you can give him ten or eight more, and when the kids are grown, you’ll have a full house of children and grandchildren."
"Do you think I’m a breeding sow? I’m not going to talk to you anymore. I have to go back and cook; Shagen will be back from the fields soon," said Axiang. She then let her baby wave goodbye to Xia Dabao.
The baby just smiled at Xia Dabao, his few teeth showing when he smiled, adorable beyond words, just like Axian when he was a child.
