Chapter 147: Chapter 149: Going to Propose Marriage_1

Nan Quanyou hummed and hawed, seemingly stuck between wanting to speak and not daring to.

"Dad, if you have something to say, just say it. If you don’t, then I’m going to bed. I’m so tired," Nan Feng said.

Nan Quanyou said hesitantly, "Well this... it’s like this... You know that Uncle Zhou came to help us wash vegetables this afternoon?"

"Yes, and what happened next?" she asked.

"Well, after that, he brought up the subject of you and Wild Brother again. He said it’s not right for you two to keep dragging things out like this. It’s clear as day that there’s an affectionate man and a willing woman. Insisting that you’re just good friends, it’s kind of like deceiving..."

Nan Quanyou tried to think of how to continue but failed.

Nan Feng helped him, "You mean deceiving ourselves and others."

"Exactly! Even though I promised you that I wouldn’t bring up the matter of getting married within this year, the thing is, you’re already fifteen. If you don’t get married soon, what if you end up an old maid? Uncle Zhou asked me to check with you today. If you’re willing, there should be no problems on Wild Brother’s end."

"No problems on Wild Brother’s end?" Nan Feng’s hand, which was combing her hair, paused slightly.

Wild Brother’s attitude towards her had always been ambiguous. Whenever she took a step towards him, he’d take a step back, but when she took a step back, he’d take a step closer to her.

Now, she was utterly confused.

Perhaps because she was too tired, or maybe momentarily dazzled by her feelings, Nan Feng oddly nodded her head, "In that case, you should ask Wild Brother what he thinks. We can discuss further if he agrees."

After finishing her sentence, Nan Feng entered her room.

She was really exhausted today. Planting seedlings, hunting, cooking, and then cleaning up the yard had left her bone-tired.

So, she fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.

...

Dawn came.

Nan Feng woke up a bit late today. She had no idea what time it was, but the sky was definitely bright.

However, the instant she opened her eyes, she remembered something very important!

Last night, didn’t her father ask her if she wanted to marry Wild Brother?

Had she really given unexpected consent because her mind wasn’t clear?

Had her father gone to inquire?

Nan Feng immediately swung her legs out of the bed, combed her hair quickly, and ran out of the room to find Nan Quanyou.

Nan Quanyou was not there!

Had he really gone to inquire? When exactly had he left?

Nan Feng felt that she needed to hear this, even if she had to eavesdrop. She wanted to know what Wild Brother truly thought.

She hastily changed into a newer outfit, freshened up, and trotted out the door.

Just as she reached the door, Nan Feng stopped in her tracks.

If she rushed over by herself and was caught, wouldn’t that be extremely embarrassing? It’d make her seem overly eager to get married. Girls in their community were not supposed to go and propose to the men.

So, she went back into her room again.

There was porridge in the pot, vegetables on the table – she had no idea when Nan Quanyou had cooked these. She quickly ate a bit.

The dishes from last night were still unwashed. Nan Feng figured she could take them to the river to wash. This would save her the trouble of fetching water and she could bring back a pail of water in the process.

So, Nan Feng went to wash the dishes in the river.

As she squatted by the river, Nan Feng felt slightly calmer, though her face still felt hot to the touch.

What was the situation with Nan Quanyou?

Various scenarios played out in her mind.

First off, Nan Quanyou would likely convey the gist to Uncle Zhou, who would ask Wild Brother for his opinion. If Wild Brother was interested in marrying Nan Feng, then he would find a matchmaker from the village to formally propose marriage again on his behalf.

Wild Brother didn’t like to talk much. He’d probably respond like this: "Hmm, I’ll select a day to ask Aunt Sima from the east end of the village to act as a matchmaker and propose to her on my behalf."

Or, Wild Brother might say: "It’d be my honor to marry Nan Feng, but I must first prepare a proper dowry. I’ll marry her with proper decorum when I’m ready."

...

Nan Feng’s face reddened again.
