Chapter 1381: Chapter 1203: Xiao’ai, Dabao, Xiaobei

"The firewood is ready... I should start cooking first," Xia Dabao acted as if nothing had happened and suddenly stood up, but she didn’t hold the spatula firmly and it dropped to the ground. She quickly picked it up and gave Long Aixi an awkward smile, "Watch the fire for me, don’t burn it too much, it will char the vegetables."

Seeing that Long Aixi did not say a word, she played to her own strengths — which was to keep talking nonsense, "You see, wasn’t Aunt Zhao cursing fiercely just a couple of days ago? Why has she stopped cursing now? Or is it that I slept so soundly at night that I didn’t hear her?"

"These last couple of days she indeed hasn’t cursed, maybe Uncle Ye has already settled it."

"Might be, my dad always has his ways. Oh dear, look at me, just going on and on, I don’t even know if I’ve added salt to the vegetables..."

...

Axiang had no longer been afraid to go outside these past few days.

During this time, people constantly came to encourage her, bringing rice, vegetables, and cured meat; she no longer had to worry about the rumors outside, and her life had become more comfortable. Some even said that she should continue to live on with Shagen, as Shagen was not inherently foolish, and such a condition wouldn’t be inherited by their children.

Axiang only said that was a matter for the future and would be discussed later. As for the things people brought, she did not accept them, asking them to take everything back, saying that she had hands and feet and could support herself and Shagen.

The fact that she didn’t accept the gifts made the villagers pity her even more, assuming she was just quiet and reserved before. Now that they had interacted with her, they realized she was genuinely straightforward, nothing like Widow Chen, and they pitied her even more. Eventually, they changed from bringing rice and vegetables to bringing vegetable seeds instead.

Axiang, however, welcomed the seeds. Knowing that Shagen had his own land, she took him to the field to plant vegetables.

Shagen’s vegetable field wasn’t large, having been split off from his aunt and uncle’s. Before his grandmother passed, she had insisted that this parcel of land be left to Shagen, that no one was allowed to take it away. Shagen tended to it normally, but his farming was quite mediocre, either watering too little or too much. Sometimes other villagers would come and lend a hand, but the vegetables in his field were poor and just sufficient for his own consumption.

Axiang shook her head and then told Shagen, "From now on, I’ll take care of the vegetable field. You can help with tilling the soil. The vegetables that grow, we’ll eat together."

Shagen was naturally happy. He wouldn’t let Axiang do the tilling, telling her to sit aside, saying when it came to sowing seeds, he’d call her over since she didn’t have much strength.

...

Not far off, someone was staring at Axiang from a distance.

It was none other than Zhao Datu.

Why had he never realized how beautiful Axiang was?

She just sat quietly at the edge of the field ridges, her pants rolled up and her small figure, looking down, was quite adorable.

Zhao Datu had seen clearly during the play that day, knowing that Axiang and Shagen referred to each other as brother and sister and hadn’t slept together, so he thought, Axiang would probably come back sooner or later.

Axiang had always been soft-hearted, and with just a little trick from him, she would surely come back.

How could Shagen compare to him, Zhao Datu, a normal man and her husband in name? Could she really stay by Shagen’s side forever?

Seeing Shagen tilling the soil, she picked up a water bucket and headed to the river to fetch water, planning to water the seeds later.

But just as she lifted the bucket, she turned around and saw Zhao Datu.
