Chapter 1357: Chapter 1179: Xiao’ai, Dabao, Xiaobei

Axiang gave a bitter smile, "You just think a wife is there to cook and sew clothes for you, but do you know what else a wife can be good for?"

Dabao was at a loss for words, his face turning beet red.

Axiang sighed, "You’re just lonely and want someone to keep you company, that’s all!"

As it grew dark, Dabao went inside to light the oil lamp and then came back to tug at Axiang, "Sister, Grandmother said we should go to sleep when it gets dark."

Only then did Axiang stand up, entering the main room with Dabao. Next to the main room was the bedroom, but Axiang still sat in the main room, asking Dabao, "You go to sleep first, I’ll sit here a bit longer."

She thought Dabao certainly didn’t understand matters of men and women, and she obviously couldn’t sleep in the same bed with him.

She didn’t even know how long she would stay here. If the villagers kept gossiping, she might be driven out of the village.

Without understanding Axiang’s concerns, Dabao came over again and pulled her inside, "Sister, you can sleep in my room!"

"And you?" Axiang asked.

Dabao laughed then brought two long benches together, "I can sleep like this. Sister, go to sleep. My grandmother said that I can’t just sleep with any lady without her consent."

"..." It seemed Dabao wasn’t as simple-minded as one might think. He remembered everything others told him, and though he didn’t quite grasp the principle, he was able to carry it out well, which, in some respects, was stronger than many normal people’s willpower.

"How about I sleep on the bench, and you go back to the room?" Axiang suggested, planning to tidy up another room tomorrow if she had time.

But Dabao was persistent and kept pushing Axiang into the room. Once inside, Dabao also helped her close the door.

He forgot there was no lamp lit inside, and it was pitch dark.

If Axiang hadn’t been there during the day to change clothes, she wouldn’t have been able to find the bed.

Even though her emotions surged like waves, Axiang’s heart gradually warmed as she felt her way to the bed and lay down.

Dabao’s quilt was a bit damp, probably from lack of airing. Axiang thought that if the sun was good the next day, she would wash and air his quilt for him. These were tasks usually done by women.

Axiang lay in bed, turning over and over without being able to sleep.

What would happen tomorrow? Her mother would surely not take this lying down and would make a fuss. Aunt Zhao would definitely spread negative talk about her throughout the village, and she might even ask the village chief to come and reprimand her. Walking through the village, she would also be the subject of villagers’ gossip...

It could only be described as a tempest.

But what could she do about it?

Recalling what Xia Dabao had encouragingly said when she mentioned living with Dabao from now on, Axiang felt a bit excited.

If Xia Dabao thought she was doing the right thing, it must be right, right?

She thought a lot until late into the night when suddenly, from outside, came a loud "bang" as something heavy fell and the sound of a bench tipping over.

It must have been Dabao falling off the bench in his sleep.

Axiang listened intently to the noises outside, hearing the bench being picked up and then the sound of someone lying down on it again; Dabao was back on the bench.

With a helpless turn, Axiang thought of calling him inside but felt it was inappropriate and decided to just get through the night.
