Chapter 1316: Chapter 1138: Xiao’ai, Dabao, Xiaobei
And there was Dabao, still following Axiang. Without realizing it, Axiang moved a bit further away, for she was a married woman and shouldn’t be in such close contact with other men, even though no one treated Dabao like an adult male.
Dabao, clueless about what Axiang was thinking, saw that she had moved away, and he stepped forward again, silently following her without a word.
"Dabao, why... why do you keep following me?" Axiang turned to ask.
"To walk you home," Dabao said.
"I don’t need to be walked home. You should go back first, it’s getting late now, shouldn’t you be preparing dinner?" Axiang said.
"There’s still... corn at my place," Dabao said.
"You’re just eating corn? How can that be okay?" Axiang asked again.
"I... won’t cook," Dabao replied succinctly.
"Is it because you don’t know how to cook?" Axiang asked.
Dabao just smiled. It was the first time Axiang had spoken so much to him, and he found the way she spoke so beautiful and gentle.
"You should rinse some rice and cook it. Always eating corn isn’t good," Axiang assumed he didn’t know how to cook.
Yet Dabao still stood there.
"I have to go now, I have to cook. I’ve been out too long and my mother will be unhappy," Axiang said.
Dabao seemed a bit disappointed, his tall and strong figure revealing an expression that was child-like.
Axiang smiled faintly at him, not saying much else, and just continued walking ahead. However, after walking a bit, she didn’t know why, but she felt a twinge of pity. She thought about it, and Dabao seemed even more pitiable than herself; at least she still had her mother, while Dabao had to live alone, and she wondered how he had managed to take care of himself and grow up.
She looked back at Dabao and saw that he was still standing there, staring at her eagerly. Her heart softened, and after thinking it over, she couldn’t help but say, "Fine, I’ll teach you how to cook the rice then."
...
Dabao’s home was on the west side of the village. A few years back, many peach trees were cut down in Peach Blossom Village, but Dabao hadn’t followed the trend of planting longan trees, so there were still a couple of peach trees in front of his house. It was March now, and the peach blossoms were in full bloom. Axiang was soft-hearted, and she found the sight of the beautiful blossoms mesmerizing.
"Your peach blossoms are really beautiful," Axiang turned and said to Dabao, a soft smile gracing her face which, framed by the peach blossoms, was especially stunning.
Dabao watched her, momentarily transfixed, then plucked a peach blossom and offered it to Axiang.
"For me?" Axiang asked.
Dabao nodded.
Axiang said with a smile, "Then I’ll just put it by the door for now, and I’ll take it when I leave. Actually, peach blossoms look better on the tree; once picked, they will wither in a few days. They don’t last long."
Dabao seemed to half understand.
"Never mind, let’s start with teaching you how to cook, " Axiang asked, "Where’s your rice container?"
Dabao pointed inside the house.
Axiang had expected to see a mess in Dabao’s house, chaotic and untidy, but upon opening the door, she found that wasn’t the case. Although everything couldn’t be considered orderly, all items were categorized and placed accordingly, and the courtyard was clean and tidy, unlike other homes with chicken droppings here and duck droppings there.
"You keep this place quite neat, how do you manage it usually?" Axiang turned to look at Dabao.
Dabao scratched his head, unable to articulate a reason, and smiled again. At that moment, the setting sun’s afterglow cast upon Dabao’s fair face, giving him a bright, sunny appearance.
